I format the cards before each job, so that's not the issue.
Thank you for your suggestion trying with an other camera... I developped this workflow using other camera brands... When I am not shooting Pentax, I use Nikon D5 (on XQD), D500 (either XQD or SD), D810 (either CF or SD) and never ever had any single issue locking up a camera, even when using SD on D810 (with very similar filesize). I neither had issues with older Nikon cameras such as D700.
The K5 is not affected by the issue, not because of the smaller file size, but because all Pentax cameras before the K-1 did not allow the user to check the photos before they where written to the card, you had to wait until the write process was finished before getting a chance to review and delete a photo. The K-1 allows not only to check the photos while data is still being processed, you can even delete the photos, but the hardware isn't able to cope with that it would require a second CPU (according to Ricoh) which the K-1 has not. The fix would be rather easy, simply by not allowing deletion while data is processed, that would not even require a second CPU.

There has been no reaction at all to the thread in the Ask Ricoh section, and it seems to have been removed now from that section.
Thankfully I never needed to re-start with the battery neither, it is just that the hardware of the camera is unable to do what the firmware allows, so deleting and writing to the card is not performed in parallel, but sequentialized, locking the camera for 10-20 seconds. I thought it would have been an easy fix in the firmware in simply not allowing the deletion while there are still data to be processed, but four firmware updates did not bring any improvement.
For the time being, I am not buying a second K-1 which I badly need if I want to cover events for the press with the K-1 as long as this behavior remains. I am really considering in a first step selling only the K-1 and if the next generation cameras still feature the bug, that would be time to close my 25-year adventure with Pentax and sell all lenses as well.

Yes, I posted the issue also in the "Ask Ricoh Imaging Support" part, they are already aware of the problem, but as long I am the only one complaining, the priority is most probably not high enough to get a solution.
Your suggestion would be a solution as well and it does not seem as if it would require much effort. Another solution could be if the photographer could rate the photos, but that's probably too much to ask at the price level of the K-1.

An LED going out for 2-3 seconds before it goes on again is not really a useful information to know if the camera finished to write the buffer to the card or not.
Until the Pentax K-3, it was not possible to review the photos taken before they were written on the card, it was not possible to lock the camera. With the K-3 II and K-1, you have full control on the user interface and are able to delete photos, locking the camera.
On a typical event, when using Nikon gear, I delete around 60-75% of the photos right on the spot. Of course I could delete the photos after having submitted a selection of the best ones to the medias and news photo agencies. But believe me, importing and reviewing 600 photos to Lightroom instead of 2000 makes a huge difference in time.
With Pentax gear (upto K-3), I don't delete as many photos, the main reason is not that I have to wait until the buffer is empty before being able to delete, but because I use the Pentax gear in lesser demanding conditions. Typically events such as figure ice skating, indoor volleyball in badly light venues or rock concerts are the domains where I definitely favor Nikon. The K-1 has however improved in many areas and I would really like to use it also for more demanding events, but this issue is definitely a killer point.
But with the K-1, I try to wait for the LED to go out, hit delete and the LED goes on again and the camera is locked for 10-20 seconds.

I don't think that 300MB/s ExtremePro SDXC cards are the bottleneck on a K-1, @manishved. They are way faster than what the K-1 is able to deliver.
I expect from a DSLR to take a photo whenever the shutter is pressed, given of course the camera is powered up and there is still enough space on memory card and buffer. The K-1 and K-3 II are the only cameras I used over the past 10 years (and these are quite a few) I am able to lockup. Ricoh really developped a unique selling point with the latest camera generation...
Anyway, for the time being, I will not change my habits and cover events using my other gear. The next firmware update will decide if I buy a second K-1 or sell it.

At the moment, my issue is not that the K-1 is unable to delete photos while still writing data to the card. My problem is that I have got used to work like this and now, whenever I decide on using the K-1, I regularly lock the camera.
I would really welcome if the camera would prevent the user from deleting photos while there is still data in the buffer, ie. by greying out the delete button on the gui. At least, I won't be able to lock the camera.

Besides the tight schedules, it happens to me also to cover several events on a single day. In order to keep post processing time as effective as possible, I adapted my workflow and it includes deleting photos right on the camera even in the shortest breaks. When a musician has the eyes closed, not good expression on face or simply badly exposed, or an athlete just turned the face away from the camera, there is simply nothing in post processing which can be done to save the photo, so WHY should I keep the photo on the card, just to waste time?
Anyway, my question was not about my workflow but to find out if I am the only one with the issue.

Unfortunately, this is a pretty common time frame I have to deal with. Even Lightroom gets too time consuming at such conditions. I now prefer to first use Photomechanics to kake the first selection as the preview rendering is way faster and only import the few selected photos to Lightroom.
I am using Nikon since a few years to cover events. The tight schedules have trained me into this workflow. The K-1 would be good enough for most events I cover (except sports), but I constantly lock the camera...
Again, my main issue is that the camera allows me to perform an operation which will lock the camera up for quite a few seconds. The lockup issue could be solved if the camera would grey out the delete button on the gui while there is data in the buffer.

@pathdoc: when you have five minutes after the shooting to submit your photos to the medias, you optimize the workflow wherever you can. It is pretty common way of working.
@disasterfilm: yes, in an ideal world, you have all the time you want to copy the photos, process and sort them. But when working for the press, the schedule is different, you need to deliver quality work on time to get paid.

@Sandy: ok, let's take an example. Concert starts at 9pm, the singer comes on stage with the usual few minutes delay, you are allowed shooting three first songs and get out of the hall at around 9:20 pm. You need five minutes to get to the press room and your deadline from the newspaper is 9:30pm. Believe me, you take the coffee either before the concert or once the photos are submitted.

I have no doubt, most users will never encounter the issue. For me however, it is common enough to have the K-1 locked up way too often.
On the first evening I used the K-1 back in May, I had the issue 8 times within 40 minutes. Now, being aware of the problem, I lockup the camera less often, but still too often.

True, I can live with having to wait a second or two, but if the camera is locked for 10 - 20 seconds because it first needs to write a few RAW files to the card is really annoying.

Hi
Have you ever experienced that your K-1 suddenly locks, not reacting to any button, not even to the shutter, for something like 10 - 20 seconds?
I had that experience on the very first evening I had the K-1 while shooting an event, back on May 6th. Back then, I experienced that lockup a few times, but was unable to reproduce it. I noticed Ricoh Imaging asking if it was a known issue of firmware 1.0, but no, the issue was unknown. Over the coming weeks, I tried to use the K-1 as much as possible covering events with it and encountered the issue quite a few times until I was able to nail down the problem and reproduce it.
When working for the press, I usually have tight schedule and learned to use even the shortest breaks to review and sort the photos (ie. deleting bad ones) as a deleted photo takes no transfer time to the computer, no time to get imported and I don't even have to take valuable time on Lightroom to review a bad photo. I have to admit that I am using this workflow whenever I take photos, not only when working on a tight schedule. Typically, when taking portraits in the streets, I take a few photos, check the photos, delete the bad ones and re-take the photos if needed.
Unfortunately, this is exactly the issue with the K-1. When you delete a photo while there is still data to be written to the memory card, the camera locks until all data is written on the card.
I am not necessarily expecting a camera to be able to write and delete photos at the same time. But my expectations toward a modern DSLR is whenever I press the shutter, the photo is taken. If the K-1 is unable to delete a photo when there is still data in the buffer without locking up, why can't the camera simply prevent the user from deleting photos in such a case? I won't be able to delete a photo, but then, it would prevent me from locking the camera...
I reported the whole issue to Ricoh Imaging back in May with a procedure to reproduce it. The issue was successfully reproduced by Ricoh Imaging, but despite four firmware updates, the issue is still present.
Believe me, the K-1 would be enough for most of the events I am covering for the press and I would really prefer using the K-1 instead of the much heavier Nikon gear like the D810 or D5. I would even take a second K-1. But for the time being, the K-1 stays at home most of the time. I am at a point where I ask myself if I should keep the K-1 just to check if an upcoming firmware update fixes the problem or give up and sell the K-1 as long as it still has a good value on the market.
Ricoh Imaging mentions I am the only one reporting the issue...
Am I really the only one?
