Two shots from the Ningaloo Solar Eclipse on the 20th.

I learned about the eclipse a couple of weeks before it occurred, and was thoroughly surprised that I had managed to live under a rock for the last 12 months. It was big news around the country, and I just happened to be in the area.

Largely unprepared, I only had the lenses that I had with me, so I couldn't use my longer telephoto primes due to them being 1,500km away in storage. That left my K-1, Sigma APO 70-200mm and Tamron 1.4x teleconverter and some ND filters. I did my best, not knowing what really to expect.

The eclipse was a total eclipse although I was on the edge of the area where the total eclipse would be seen. It was projected to last for 62 seconds, but it seemed much, much shorter. The experience was absolutely wonderful. On the photography side, I did kinda blunder, as I didn't really know what to expect. These are about the best of what I could shoot, heavily cropped and pushed very hard in post ( +5 stops . . . ). One from just before the total eclipse, and the next from just after.

I do have shots with the sun completely blocked, however the drop in luminance within those few seconds is so severe that in a panic I ran the shutter speed out way too long and motion blur ruined the shots. Better to have dropped the aperture value drastically or to even have removed the ND filter completely. The lens combo is also very prone to flare, but you gotta work with what you have. Still happy that I got something, and I'll be better prepared for next time :).

With the summer winds tailing off now and controlled burns happening around the area, we have had some smokey mornings around Perth with the calm nights and mild easterly winds bringing in the haze from inland. These shots were south of the river at Mt Henry bridge about an hour or so after sunrise. The CBD was a silhouette in the distance to the north. Shortly afterward the wind began picking up, ruining the reflection and clearing the smoke.

All three taken with Sigma APO 70-200 f2.8 at full reach. All are single exposures with a ND filter.

A few shots from recent weeks. The first and second are from last night's sunset at Cottesloe Beach, Perth. There was a thunderstorm rolling in from off the Indian Ocean, which hid all of the sunset colour, aside from what lit up the rain on the horizon. Unfortunately I didn't capture any lightning, although it occasionally flashed somewhere to the south-west. First photo with the 28-105mm at somewhere around 28mm ( the EXIF is wrong, the lens is faulty and it reads 68mm for any focal length ), and is a blend of two different exposures. The second was taken well after sunset with the Samyang 14mm, just as the rain began to patter around me. It is also a blend of two exposures.

The third photo is from a couple of weeks back at North Beach Jetty. We had a wonderful sunset, and since I had been visiting this spot a few times over the previous week, it was nice to get the shot I was hoping for! It is a blend of probably 3 images ( I lose track ), so it is a composite. Also with the 28-105mm at the wider end ( ignore the EXIF data again, I layer photos over an older photo in Affinity Photo for correct sizing and consistent placement of horizon. The older photo was taken with the Samyang 24mm, and wow this is getting confusing ).

Last night's sunset up on Zig Zag Road in the hills above Perth, Western Australia.

Very high altitude cloud; the colour eventually began showing up around 20 minutes after sunset, but it was well worth the wait for its intensity.

K1 + D-FA 28-105mm at f16. Focal length probably around 70mm and 90mm ( metadata is no longer recorded from the lens after salt water damage ). Focus stacked and exposure blended.

Sunset over Busselton Jetty, the longest wooden pier in the Southern Hemisphere at 1.8 kilometers long. A really nice sunset that I was fortunate enough to make it to in time to capture it. First photo is a single exposure with the Samyang 24mm. Second photo is a composite of three photos with the Samyang 14mm late in the sunset, with the sky being a separate exposure and two different exposures for the waves blended together. ISO pushed up to 1600, so unfortunately there's a lot of chroma noise in the sand and a few odd variances from blending everything, but still pretty happy with how it turned out.

I love that texture in the sky! At what point does the vignetting clear up when using the 18-35mm in full frame mode? I remember hearing that it was sometime after 24mm?[COLOR="Silver"]

Early morning from Devils Slide, Porongurup National Park, Western Australia. Overcast sunrise with very little colour, very windy, very cold, and rain showers passing me by on each side and sleet occasionally landing on my jacket. About 20 minutes after sunrise the sun finally found a gap in the cloud and lit up some rain as it was moving across the farmland. Bluff Knoll is hidden in the background on the left, and I later found out that it snowed on the peak that morning - testament to how cold it was, I suppose!

The Porongurups are a granite ridgeline with some individual peaks and big granite boulders. Not exactly comparable to Half-Dome or anything of that scale, but still a nice place to hike and some plenty big rocks to photograph.

This is a stitched panorama two panels wide, shot in the horizontal orientation. Two exposures for each panel; one exposed to the sunlight, and the other for the darker foreground, blended then stitched. Taken off my tripod, with K-1 and 28-105mm probably at around 35mm ( the lens no longer records the focal length due to water damage :hmm: ).

Thanks, the Samyang throws up a lot of hexagonal flare spots, probably from dust inside the lens or on the sensor. It's really out of necessity to try and cut that down, and unfortunately you do lose out on some of the beautiful veiled flare because of it.

Thank you!

It's probably the closest thing we have to a mountain range over here. Much of the remainder of the state is mostly flat, with a lot of red rock and plenty of beautiful beaches!

Might as well share a photo or two to bump up the tally for a raffle entry! :D

Sunrise on Bluff Knoll, earlier in the year. BK is the only place in Western Australia that gets an annual dusting of snow! We got about 4 different separate snow falls this winter on Bluff Knoll, which may be some sort of record! No camping is allowed on the peak, so myself and a bunch of other people walked up in the dark and were rewarded with a great sunrise. The snow came and went with the low cloud, so while it was snowing the peak was shrouded in cloud so you couldn't see anything. The snow didn't last long on the ground either, and would melt quickly. There is some residue snow on some of the bushes in the photo, but it's difficult to tell.

Two photos blended; one for the sky, the other for the foreground while blocking the sun with my hand ( to get rid of flare ). K-1, Samyang 20mm f1.8.

Thanks! The bright streak is the moonlight reflecting off my gumboot/Wellies, as the moon was behind me when I took that part of the composition. I decided to keep it there, mostly to add a highlight and a bit more depth to my silhouette ( I didn't want it too dark ), but if isn't recognizable as such and/or a bit illogical, then maybe it's a bit pointless keeping it there.

Raining star light.

Yeah, a bit cheesy; but I had an idea, and borrowed a mate's lavender-coloured umbrella to see if it would work

Taken about a week ago at Lake Dumbleyung. K-1 with the Samyang 20mm f1.8. f4 and ISO800, 43 exposures at 120 seconds each for the stars and reflections. After I had finished the star trails, I then light-painted the trees using my headlamp and merged them to in to give them a bit more detail so that they weren't just dark silhouettes.

The shot of me and the umbrella was taken much earlier in the evening at a different spot on the lake while the moon was still up for some illumination on my back. I used the Sigma 35mm f1.4 @ f2.8, ISO6400 and 15 seconds. I set the intervelometer, trudged out into the water to a spot with a rock in the water where I had pre-focused, and held my best pretend-it's-raining pose for 15 seconds. I then cut and glued it into the photo, scaling it against the tree.

Glad it actually ended up looking kind-of how I envisioned. :p

Taken shortly after sunrise on a calm morning down at Hotham River. A little bit of fog hovering on the water, and the sun lighting up the trees. Two exposures focus merged, D-FA 28-105mm @ 68mm, f14, ISO100, 1/4 second exposure.

A photo from a recent trip to the South Island of New Zealand. Taken in the late evening, with no moon, looking over a tarn ( small alpine lake ) near Lake Angelus Hut in the mountains of Nelson Lakes National Park. K-1 with the Samyang 24mm f1.4 @ f1.8, ISO 3200. 6 columns and 4 rows of photos merged, focus stacked, and then stitched together using Affinity Photo. I've had a lot of drama with stitched nightscape shots, but I'm happy that this one turned out quite nicely!

Thanks!

I agree; being able to capture the full rainbow from that vantage point was a real privilege. Until I viewed it in Lightroom, I was sweating about that photo and hoping that it turned out well!

Yes, there has been PP done on that shot; mostly boosting the contrast in the clouds, and bringing the shadows on the shrubbery up, with a few highlights on the bushes dusted with the Adjustment Brush. I also bumped up the temp a notch to get rid of the mild blue in the clouds. Certainly enough to give me pause about misrepresentation ( I do dwell on the ethics of editing, but that's a whole other thread! ), but I'm comfortable that it is faithful rendition of what I remember the scene to be. The colour in the rainbow is 100% legit, though!

And another few from the trip. The first was taken on Wreck Beach with the DFA 28-105 using a Hoya ND filter, the second was a sunrise from Mt Buffalo over the smoky valley, again using the DFA 28-105, and the third was taken at sunset from a vantage point on the Great Ocean Walk called Slippery Point using the Samyang 14mm - sometimes what is happening on the opposite horizon is more interesting than the main event.

I recently took a trip to the state of Victoria ( Australia ). Got a few pics out of it that I rather enjoy. First pic taken with the DA 15mm SMC ( heavily cropped ), second with the Samyang 20mm, and the third with the Sammy 24mm. Taken on the coast around the 12 Apostles National Park.
