I only saw the big one when I was shooting.

Yes, the combination of mandibles and tongue is quite interesting. Wait 'til you get a look at ant mouth anatomy!
My first macro lens was an SMC Macro Takumar 50mm f4, which I think has the same optical formula as yours. Looks like you're enjoying it.

They are bewitching in their intricacy and diversity. They are a wonderful subject. Welcome to the hive/nest/colony/swarm!

Great in flight shot! No need to apologize, I often forget to change the lens ID when I'm going back and forth.

Thanks! I'm more of a wasp/bee/beetle shooter (though I couldn't name any species or genus if my life depended on it) and don't get to our local pondsas much as I'd like, so I don't have much experience with these creatures. More avenues toexplore! Now that I've got my Tamron 72B for longer 1:1 reach, I'll be all set. Should be interesting to see what it will do when combined with Raynox 250 or Vivitar 2X Macro TC.

So what is the difference? I think I can tell (differences in body proportions and size, eye morphology, and wing resting position?), but I'd still like to hear!

I can see how looking at insects can be an acquired taste. I have some insect subjects I "prefer" over others, for reasons even I can't figure out. Admiring them through photographs is a good, non-threatening introduction that might acclimate you to more and more six legged beings at your own pace. I think I certainly appreciate insects more, now that I photograph them. Their diversity is quite remarkable, and I'm not in the tropics, where that diversity must be stupendous.

The bee survived the crop very nicely. Wouldn't have guessed if you hadn't shown the uncropped version.

Bees in flight! I've found bees tobe amongst the trickiest macro subjects to shoot well. This is a nice one!

It can be tricky. You're shooting at a smaller aperture without automatic diaphragm, and if you're using anything shorter than 50mm your depth of field is even shallower than it is at 1:1. The number of keepers can be on the low side ;), but when things work, it's very rewarding. I've found it much easier to use lenses without aperture rings since I picked up one of these:

I've had great success with the DA 18-55 II and the DA 35 f2.4. I have yet to try my newly acquired 35 Limited. It will be interesting to see if it performs better than the Plastic Fantastic when reversed.

My first reversed zoom attempts were with a silver FA 35-80 kit lens I picked for $5.00 at a pawn shop that was going out of business. Can't get much more basic than that!

Thank you. The first one is with the Sigma EX DG 70mmf2.8 macro, the second is one of my first shots using a reversed 18-55 kit lens. Both on K-S2.

Thanks!

I was stunned when I was notified, given the amazing images I've seen on that front page. Never thought one of mine would end up there. It's a good feeling! I'm still buzzing. :D

Speaking of buzzing, a big thanks to my subject, too!

Early morning bugs, still cold, sleepy and dewy:

100% of above. I didn't realize that bee fuzz had tiny branches like feather barbs before.

From earlier today, first extended use of Raynox 250, mounted on a Tamron 52BB 90mm f2.8, on KP. I really like the results! This combination may reduce my yearning for a 1:1 macro lens longer than 70mm.

This wasp (hornet?) has a drop of water on its head, hanging between the antennae. I didn't notice this until I processed the image.

A longhorn beetle, a Locust Borer, Megacyllene robiniae. Goldenrod is a great place to find lots of different insects.

A grasshopper, taken with the Tamron on its own, without the Raynox.

Ant stuff from a couple of years ago, but just cleaned up today. Reversed Kinotel on K-S2.

Ant mouth parts are complicated! Until I took these shots, I had no idea they had these bits tucked in behind their mandibles.

And some non-ant shots I took today. Reversed Kinotel with extension on KP:
