That’s really odd. The 85 f1.8 shot almost looks decentered. Have you checked it?

How to check how decentered your lens is - phillipreeve.net

I used to own the A* 85 f1.4 and when I sold it I replaced it with the77/1.8. I never recall seeing quite that dramatic a difference.

Using this DOF calc I’m only seeing a small difference in acceptable dof at 10’ :

85@1.8
Depth of field
Near limit 9.86 ft
Far limit 10.1 ft
Total 0.29 ft

In front of subject 0.14 ft (49%)
Behind subject 0.15 ft (51%)

Hyperfocal distance 665.5 ft
Circle of confusion 0.02 mm

76@1.8 (77 not available in tool)
Depth of field
Near limit 9.82 ft
Far limit 10.2 ft
Total 0.37 ft

In front of subject 0.18 ft (49%)
Behind subject 0.19 ft (51%)

Hyperfocal distance 532 ft
Circle of confusion 0.02 mm

Both on apsc.

Also if used to compare dof I would try to get subject sizes the same making distance to the subject vary. But as you are illustrating a landscape shooting issue I suppose the fixed distance is more meaningful.

Given that it is an artistic rendering - it could be an amalgam of inspirations that birthed that image - it may not accurately reflect anything other than the artists intent.

Indeed. I shot some 120 film cameras and I’m aware how different that can be. The interchangeable lens options are dizzying with multiple formats added in!

Gotcha. My point isn’t about thinking in those terms - it’s about how they appear. I shoot both formats and spent a lot of time with both exclusively at one part of my life or another.

The 28 is the same focal length ratio to the diagonal of the sensor as the FA 43 was on 35mm film. That focal length was selected because it is the natural “normal” lens length for 35mm film. 43 is also close to the flange focal length of that time making for a simple design.

My point was mainly that a “normal lens” perspective was something I got very comfortable with at one point due to shooting so much with it. I also had spent a good deal of time shooting “slightly wide” 35mm rangefinders which is why I think a 28 on a crop sensor feels like an old friend (splitting the difference in angle of view).

I too kept my DA 40 over my FA 43. I can’t define why. The 24 on crop is preferred by many as it’s much like a 35mm on 35mm film or ff digital cameras. I tend to prefer 20mm and 15mm over 24mm on crop but that’s not a strong preference.

Nice. On a crop sensor that’s like the FA 43 - a natural normal. Do you like the FA 43 on a full frame body? I didn’t but it wasn’t the field of view. I really like 28-31 on FF and 28 is a good wider normal on a crop body for me. I spent MANY years with only one lens on my Nikon body. I got to use anything (within reason) from time to time but I only owned the 50 f2. That made me very comfortable with a normal lens perspective - and I had a telephoto bias as well. It took me a long time to lean into wide angle, and I still prefer 28 over 24 much of the time but I venture wider now. The DA 15 taught me that wide can be fantastic - but it is a special lens.

The trend towards crazy wide in ff is interesting. I’m using a Sony 20-70 and it doesn’t feel nutty wide but in my film days 28 was wide and 24 felt a bit too wide at times. I’ve used a da 15 on apsc (about 22-23mm equivalent on FF) so my tolerance for 20mm had been primed. I use the 12-24 and 11-18 on my KP from time to time. Both are quite a bit wider than the 20-70.

Astro, infrared, etc. mostly Astro if not converted. There are filters that remove some of the light pollution. Maybe low issue for you.

Fun! I’ve used a short extension tube with mine but it’s far less flexible than the helicoid. I wonder if that kind of helicoid is available for my Sony… but of course then I’m losing af. Still not a bad choice in some cases.

Honestly at these resolutions online it’s hard to tell. If the images make you happy, tell your friend to pound sand. Sharpness is a nice to have, composition and mood and other factors are what make a photo speak to me.

When I used to own the converted K-3 mono - I really liked the DA35 macro on it. It's just a wonderful combination. I'm not surprised it also works well on the K3iii mono.
