DA* 60-250 mod for FF

Sorry but the DA* 60-250 is the one lens of the 5 DA* lenses that have both ScrewDrive and SDM that cannot be converted by any known method. We know of ONE that appears to be working converted in Russia but details of that conversion have never been fully shared and it is presumed some direct manipulation of the internal workings was done or something outside of the LENSROM.LNS was modified since using the exact LENSROM from that lens doesn't work on any other lens either.

I've been chasing a solution for a long time - I'd love to offer conversions of the DA* 60-250 and as I own one it would be great future insurance. So far no dice.

Ugh - Bill you are one of a small minority but I hate that for you. The DA* 60-250 doesn't seem to have sdm failure often but when it does the conversion process isn't an option. I wish I could convert it for you but we've never figured out the magic reason that lens won't convert.

Did you sand first? You might try that and FLAT not matte paint.

Here are some shots from the past made from at least 10 meters from stage, perhaps farther. These are Sooc unedited jpgs. You'll see my iso was between 800-1600 and most shots were at f 2.5-2.8.

At those distances the lens is starting to show less focus breathing, but only you know what the lighting is like. Is an f/4 lens fast enough for you? If not then one of the 70-200's or the 50-135 and shoot crop mode or on a crop body.

The DA* 200 is f/2.8 which matters to some uses. The DA* 60-250 f/4 is also heavier. However the most important factor is that even at 250mm the DA* 60-250 produces a smaller image than the DA* 200 at short distances (under 10 meters). The closer you are the more focus breathing you notice and the DA* 60-250 can be effectively not longer than a 135mm in image magnification when very close to minimum focus distances. This is not true of the DA* 200 - so for closer shooting the DA* 200 is a much "longer" lens. That can be very important or not at all important depending on your intended use. (I own both).

Tentatively interested even with no desire for full frame as of yet. I think it would be cool to have my lens premodified for FF "just in case" or as an added benefit for sale.

The rectangular mod seems harder to fit however with the alignment effort. Is there an index that could be added to make it self aligning?

And option 3. Remove the baffle and do not replace it.

Sure - an age old question on the forums has been what to set the SR to with a zoom and everyone has a different answer. One common one is to set it a the lowest range to avoid over correcting and allow the SR to do something. That is a pain however if you mainly shoot longer.

I can't recall - does the 1.7x allow you to set focal length manually or does it pass the lens focal length through?
Autofocus and SR are independent so the mere fact that you are using an intermediate device shouldn't stop it from working - but the focal length might well be wrong and not something you can change. This could be fixed with a firmware update to permit forcing a focal length to the SR even with lens focal length is known - or better yet an option to force a multiplier like 1.7x.

That's helpful info. Thanks. Any idea what was the problem with the alternate tube exactly? Shiny? Not the right size exactly?

Dear sir. You are an unhelpful bore. You are now in my ignore list. Bliss.

Since you took yours all the way off I assume you retained it. Since removing it have you seen any ill effects from removing it? Any situations where it is less sharp or you see less contrast when you have the lens wide open?

Don't try putting words in my mouth. I never said I didn't like the thread.

You dremmeled something, unclear to me why or what. Some people expressed the view that the foam was all that needed to be removed. The thread is good in that there is discussion, but very hard to follow. You mention the part is strong, but is the strength needed? Does it carry any load? Is there any reason it couldn't be replaced with a cardboard or phenolic tube?

? I really don't understand this reference. I'm also struggling to understand why you needed a grinder if the part being removed is foam or felt. The lack of pictures and the level of language ambiguity in this thread is leaving me totally unclear on what is needed to accomplish this.

Additionally the lack of A/B comparisons at multiple focal lengths and f/stop and lighting conditions leads me to think this is a risky procedure with unknown outcome. Having the original part in original condition to restore function to original purpose seems prudent. Given the fact that some have removed the tube entirely I would think it could be replaced with a cardboard version without harm. (Painted of course).

It might be worthwhile to fabricate a version that is made of cardboard or other materials and set aside the version that came with the lens.

That is quite interesting. I wonder what the purpose of the baffle is and how this negatively (if at all) impacts things.
