This is the wrong thread in some ways to detail this - but as you are asking, I will try to clarify my experience:
2 lenses of the hundreds I have converted - wouldn't work. Both were unable to manual focus when I tried before conversion.
0 lenses that have been able to manual focus have failed to convert.
0 lenses that failed to convert were unable to be repaired - in both cases the underlying cause of the failure was unrelated to conversion.
I don't charge my fee (but you pay shipping in both directions) if a conversion is unsuccessful.
The other option is to convert a lens yourself following the excellent instructions contained in this thread.

My experience is that unless the lens won’t focus manually before conversion - conversion will work. I’ve converted hundreds of lenses over the years, there have only been two that failed - both wouldn’t focus manually prior to conversion.

Not useable. K-30 onwards doesn't work. Debug has other uses on these cameras but this method and other methods using debug fail.

I don’t think a class action lawsuit is attractive to lawyers in this case and having been around a few I’m skeptical that it would do anything useful. However if Pentax allowed users to simply select which focusing system was prioritized on those lenses it would be a huge benefit to their customers. Sadly it might actually be a legal admission of problems which would open them up for the lawsuits.
In the meantime conversion works and it’s got a good track record.

Sent - let me know if you have problems. It's pretty simple with that camera. The one caveat is that you MUST make backups of the files before making changes. Also I have had my K100d fail to finish writing the file a few times. Each time it has happened the old file was unmodified on the lens and writing it again worked. This is a "at your own risk" process.

I’ve had zero complaints, The processes I use it to first archive the original file, then edit and change a copy of the file. I test before shipping and offer a money back if unsatisfied option. No one has ever asked for their money back. I think the risks are low and the payoff is high for the lens owners.

As far as I know, I’m the only one offering this service regularly. (Located in USA sorry). If you want to convert a lens grab a k100d and contact me. I’m happy to share how I do it in detail.
TO BE CLEAR: that isn’t the only camera that works. It is just the easiest and the one I use routinely.

This is interesting. I have never found a 16-50 with those values outside of “row 3”. The 50-135 often has two outside of that row. I’m glad you found the issue, I was going to ask if you had inadvertently changed values outside the intended column.

My reply earlier said "K-5" when I meant "K-50" it was a phone typo. I was replying to the person asking if their K-50, K3iii, KP could convert the lens. Yes the K-5 series appears to work. I don't use it myself so I don't know the details well. I know PKTETHER is one option but I think the SD Card trick to enter DEBUG works. Once in Debug the basics are the same. You take a copy of the file, edit it outside the camera (or on camera if you dare), save a copy and update the lens. Nothing complex. I can add color to this if needed.

I own both of those combinations. I kept all three lenses. The 18-135 is more convenient when traveling - the 20-40 + 50-135 is more special.
No, the k-50 and KP bodies won’t be able to convert the lens. The debug mode can be entered on the k-50 and KP but the lens rom read and write functions don’t work. I’m unclear if the k3iii has a debug mode that is known, but no one has demonstrated that it can covert sdm lenses so far. The k3iii uses a different processor and operating system which may have very different underlying mechanisms.

No one can say with any certainty. Rumors suggest that the sdm system has been modified over time. But it’s not clear if that’s actually has an impact on failure rates. It’s also not clear how many lenses fail.

That’s my conversion platform of choice as well. The k100D super is my backup option. It does require a specially prepared sd card to go to debug, and it’s not able to pre-check screwdrive function before conversion. But it’s an option that works in a pinch.

In theory that K10D can be used to convert the lens but I'm not 100% certain of how that works with that firmware. Once upon a time the newer firmware disabled that option. I think it is still possible - just check the threads. I'm a K100D / K100D Super type guy for my conversions. Any platform that works does the same basic job. If you need help just yell.

You’re on target. The modification is in the lens not the camera. Once modified all sdm capable bodies think the lens is only screwdrive. This works on the four DA* lenses mentioned before (16-50/sdm, 50-135, 200, 300) it fails on the 60-250 for unknown reasons.

There were ways to downgrade the firmware with hacked firmware that tricked the camera into thinking it was newer and then go back later. Those links all seemed dead when I looked.

K3 can get into debug but can’t write the lens rom data and can’t be used for conversion. I thought firmware 1.31 broke conversion with that camera but I could be mistaken.

You can’t. Only older camera bodies work. I use a k100d or k100d super. Why bodies do you have?
