Shooting in the best resolution you have is the best benefit - you can crop a lot more from 24MP than 6. You may end up at 6mp but so what if you get the shot you want and the print/view of it is sufficient for your needs.

Glad I could help. Enjoy the trail!

Great plan!

Personally I think memory card space is CHEAP. Buy big one's and don't look back. I shoot in RAW and JPG simultaneously to two separate cards. Then once you know you don't need the greater size if you want you can downsize it. But if you crop or otherwise need extra resolution - you have it. Storage is cheap these days.

If I might suggest you might want to get a dry bag (if you don't already have one) and tie it to a float for those water adventures when the camera is put up and needs protection. As for a backup body - I would personally only carry a small P&S or Mirrorless as the backup while out and about. For me that would be the Panasonic LX7. The Pentax MX-1 is another good option albeit a bit larger. Keeping a backup body at home for when you return with your equipment lost seems prudent.

I read the post above 3 times and I am still not sure but I think you are saying you are holding off and possibly investing in gear later for event shooting. Correct?

Why 6mp? The KS-2 can do 20 - was there a particular reason to hold it 6?

I was going to post a detailed explanation but I will just say this. FF vs. APSC has been debated for many many years and the consensus seems to be that APSC is in fact better for fast moving small wildlife. The reasons appear to be:

Faster frame rates. Even in cropped mode the FF cameras at 36mp class are typically unable to keep up with the cropped cameras. The Pentax K-1 and K-3ii follow that pattern.

More "reach' - despite the undebatable truth that the lens is showing the same physical size image on the sensor, there are three aspects that make it feel longer. First the angle of view shown makes the framing for the cropped area easier even if you later crop even more. This makes it feel longer to your mind which is not an unimportant consideration but it is one that you can learn to work around. Second the magnification of most APSC cameras viewfinders is larger than what the FF cameras offer. Typically the FF viewfinder is still larger overall but the cropped section ends up considerably smaller - this limits the detail you can see in the shot if you are going to crop to APSC or smaller. Third the pixel density of top end systems of each in the same generation tend to be higher in the cropped body than the FF - the exception to this would be the Canon 50mp FF. The effect of this is to give you more detailed crops than you would have otherwise and allow crops to "zoom" you to the subject and still retain acceptable image quality.

If you don't believe me - read the posts over the past 10 years or more from Nikon users and Canon users trying to determine which sensor size works best for their use. And no - despite the fact that a consensus seems to have emerged this has not stopped the debate. Pictures like the moon shot do not stop the endless debate because there are mixes of absolute truth and fiction (perceptual issues of the brain) at play here.

Ah for me that may be different. Eye surgery before I was 25. Cataracts slowly starting... looks like eye surgery in the future again - hopefully many years away.

You just convinced me! Lol. I have an analytical side and just want to understand the factors. Any optimization problem is interesting. I have no delusions that one camera or the other will magically make me a better photographer.

And yes I was out doing some shooting tonight.

One small point. Comparing equal pixels is silly. Comparing equal objective image size on the framed area make more sense. Put another way - I wouldn't compare a crop of 1000x1000 on the K-1 to a similar 1000x1000 pixels on the K-3 they don't have the same density of pixels. When the K5iis was held up as having better noise I saw some people argue that if you took the 24mp image and downsampled to 16mp and then compared the two images that didn't really hold up. I can't run that test - I don't have anything except a K-3. The point I am making however is that if you have to crop away the FF excess and you are left with an APSC or less sized image, the same size in pixels isn't your comparison point - it's going to be 24/15 times as many pixels to reflect the inherent density. Perhaps I'm misthinking this and all you have to do is downsample the K-3 pixels or upsample the K-1 pixels to give a level playing field - an image that represents what you would actually print from or at least one that has the same baseline resolution.

Now I have no dog in this fight, I am slightly biased to think that APSC at high density of sensor produces better long range shots than FF - and this is in part based on things like the Q and based on the ability to frame and capture images and crop away unwanted bits and still have sufficient MP left to work with. HOWEVER I have zero FF digital experience so I could be blowing smoke up my own butt.

Feel free to tell me why my thinking is twisted and wrong - but also if anyone feels like doing it - go for it. Oh and please use rational ISO's that reflect a range that both cameras work well at. Then later you can crank the ISO up to show the FF can crush the APSC under lower light conditions - which is an important potential consideration.

Dang - now all I can think of is Rupert doing a Hugh Heffner impression with a water resistant cell phone and the wifi control app - he's drinking champagne with some companions and occasionally lazily pressing a button on the screen of his wireless device to capture stunning shots of whatever animal has landed...

I'm lost. There is a lot of debate about the functional use of the cameras but I'm still unclear if wildlife and nature meant landscapes as well as moving creatures or something else. I would also follow up by asking what SIZE creatures at what distance and I would ask is this a blind setup or a stalk and shoot setup? The crop mode of the K-1 is competitive with the K-5iis but framing for crop mode seems difficult from what I am hearing from users of the K-1. I'm of the uninformed opinion that the FOV change is important to consider. The K-1 seems fantastic - and for someone like me it may be more than I can justify but I can see it fitting well with my lens collection. But I have a lot more FF lenses than most people in this position - even so I'm asking myself to justify the expense and falling short. My current K-3 outperforms my ability most of the time.

Frankly it boils down to what are you trying to improve and what do you want to spend. The simple answer might be to add a DA 15 or DA 12-24 and understand that's a toe in the waters to see if the DFA 15-30 and a K-1 are in the future. I wouldn't buy the K-3ii until you know what you want from the camera/lens. If you need to buy glass - factor that in. So if the K-1 means a DFA 150-450 or an FA* 600 is in the future - so be it. Factor in also any backup you might need. If you get the 15-30 - and the K-1 goes down - is using it on the crop body OK? If not then do you need a second K-1 or can you get by with the DA 15 or DA 12-24 as the backup? Likewise in reverse - if the DA* 300 on the K-5iis is the main bird camera - will using it on the K-1 in crop mode (or full frame for that matter) be sufficient for use as a backup or do you need a longer lens etc.

I don't know the answers - I'm curious about the details of the questions and the outcome.

Can you more clearly define wildlife and nature photography? Is this moving animals in both cases or is the nature part landscapes at all? For landscapes the K-1 will be a dream once you have some FF wide angle lenses. The K-3ii with pixel shift will greatly enhance over the K-5iis but the K-1 will do even more of this. The K-3ii will give you the highest pixel density for you DA* 300 shots but the K-1 gives an overall cropped view similar to the K-5 so it isn't as though you would lose resolution on cropping to speak of vs. what you have now. The K-1 offers some advantages in low light and noise.

But if all you shoot is moving critters - then the K-3ii offers a superior frame rate and a slightly higher pixel count in the cropped area (24mp vs. 15mp) that could make the difference in cropping to get the shot. It has been so long since I shot full frame so I'm am not certain how the two really compare and I would advise you to try one or both before making the plunge. Maybe you can find a local pentaxian with a K-1 or rent one.
