I agree it is a specialist lens. I also point it out as it was part of those reviews. It may well be a fine lens for purpose.

DXO's latest shows the same purple. In DXO I can show corrections or not and since this lens doesn't yet have corrections they don't differ.

Reading this review was an eye opener: Nikon 50mm f/1.4G Review - Photography Life
The Nikon 1.4 isn't that sharp but is sharper than the Sigma (EX not ART). It is also not weather sealed. It is also pretty cheap compared to the Sigma and Zeiss and similar lenses.
Here's more context with the Art lens (much much better than the older EX version): Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art Sharpness and Bokeh Comparison - Photography Life ---------- Post added 05-16-18 at 02:24 PM ---------- To put this in context the review of the FA 50 1.4 doesn't seem so bad now that I see how poorly the Nikon 50mm 1.4G does.
Perhaps just as interesting the Nikon 58mm 1.4G isn't all that either - however the bokeh is nice enough. But that is a lot of $ to pay for a lens that performs that way.

I downloaded the shot of the helmet and zoomed in to 400% in DXO. I can see some PF on the chrome bits I think. I also see green fringe around the white floral shot on the upper right of the central subject. I'm not sure if these are indicative of anything as I have no reference point to compare to in similar prime 50's at f1.4 of other brands. In both cases the amount looks very small. It is certainly better than my DA* 200 in this respect.

I can't supply ratio's of good lens to bad lens but I can confirm I fix far more of those two than the two primes (200/300). I have also been very infrequently contacted about 60-250's but that zoom cannot be resolved using the conversion methods we understand.

I was speculating that the "tentative" part may be tied up in determining if they will keep SDM in the name but to be honest that ship probably already sailed and they likely have trademarks and will keep it. I agree with you on this possibility.

I personally think they would be wise to DROP the SDM name and come up with a new name for this technology to distance themselves from past issues.

I guess my point earlier about all the choices needed to be slightly moderated by the low performance of the FA 50 f/1.4 at the wider f/stops. I am sure there are reasons people feel they need these wide open resolutions and I am not here to say they don't. I am here to say, I can't see needing it. But I sure hope the DA* 55 prices on the used market come down due to this lens... I may have to buy one.

I did read a very interesting article on the fa 50 f1.4 that gave poor test results on the k-1. The performance at f1.4 was very soft and the performance at f2 wasn't much better. The lens produces about half the resolution expected until about f2.8, with f2 being in between. Edges were a bit off even after f2.8.
On the other hand, the FA 43 LIMITED was very good starting at wide open.
So maybe the DFA 50 is needed more than I realized. Pentax SMC FA 50mm F1.4 Review & Rating | PCMag.com |

FA 43 Limited
DA 40 Limited
DA 70 Limited
So several close options. But the new lens isn't a limited either. It's a " * " so there isn't anything close I can think of - perhaps the A* 85?

My only thought was that it is a focal length they think they can sell to APSC and FF users due to the high quality and f1.4 aperture. But the DA* 55 already exists and will likely drop in price in the marketplace due to the presumably more reliable focus system and presumably sharper edges on FF.

While we pine away for the DFA 50... the F/FA 50 (1.4 & 1.7 & 2.8) and the DFA 50 and the DA 50 and the DA 40 and all the other near 50mm focal length lenses want you to know they are out there and waiting for you to pick them up and shoot something!
It isn't like this new lens is filling a gap that there are no options for. Unlike a new mount (looking at you Hasselblad, Fuji, Sony, Canon, m43) the gaps post release are in refinement more than anything else. Buying used the possibilities are endless but even new there are few gaps in the lineup other than expectations and more refined options. Silent focus and near 50mm.. DA* 55 f1.4, smooth manual focus and crazy bokeh - 50mm f1.2, dirt cheap just do it? DA 50 and some PP to clean up the edges.
Personally while this lens may be amazing - I wish they had started with the 85 or a wide angle prime. The 50 isn't where there are as many gaps IMHO.

That's not fair or entirely accurate. DFA 150-450 and 70-200 are pure Pentax right?
