To be fair, most PROs would have two bodies, one with 70-200 and the other with 24-70.

I haven't seen a lot of misinformation in the thread it in people's expressed preferences. What I have seen is a bunch of people that have very different priorities in photography communicating these values sometimes well and sometimes poorly.

Why does it bother you when people have different photographic preferences?

Lol. I know what you mean. However the actual article isn't bad. Rockwell did correctly identify a lens that has been lambasted for decades - and that's his entire contribution. The rest is about actual results of an actual pro in real work and in a bake off test.

I suggest scooting past the Rockwell moment. It isn't a bad read.

I'm sorry you seem so angry. The point of the best and worst Nikon zoom wasn't at all about that brand. If you read it you may get perspective that clears up misconceptions about vintage glass.

If you prefer to not read my offered link about vintage vs modern optics then you should post your own Pentax centric example of how bad those lenses you dismiss are.

Photographic evidence by your peers doesn't agree. I see many here using older lenses getting stunningly good results. I honestly think you are either rather over concerned with Pixel peeping or you are misinformed. There are BAD lenses in the F/FA/FAJ range but many are quite good.

Food for thought:

Nikon's 'Worst' and 'Best' Zoom Lenses Compared

We are spoiled by things like the DFA 50... Great images can be made by those with skill and talent using even bad lenses.

This is true only if you ignore that vast collection of F, FAJ and FA lenses. (assuming autofocus is a requirement).

In Information Technology there are often optimization problems where you can have two of three but not all there at optimal levels. The characteristics of the lenses desired properties is similar. Cost and size appear to be the factors least optimized with modern optics.

I have to be honest, I'm unclear what the relative merits of lens motors might be. While sdm lenses have a reputation for high failure rates it's the slowness of the system that bothers me when compared to competing systems. DC motor lenses aren't immune to failure, but more importantly they seem faster to focus and possible more consistent.

The 60-250 f4 is quite close.

Also the historical sdm transition can be used as a blueprint. There were many sdm lenses like the da 55 1.4 that had nothing like it in screwdrive - and it didn't stop them. Because by the time it was introduced no Pentax model was still sold that lacked sdm. The previous da* lenses all had dual focusing systems because when they were introduced there were screwdrive only bodies in the lineup.

At this point I'm not aware of any current Pentax that can not use the newest electronic aperture lenses.

Both 55-300 lenses are apsc... I'm not sure how this fits your pattern.

Right. Since the mention of portrait use came up I figured the stf type lens would fit the need.

Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus (STF) – LAOWA Camera Lenses

Would this help ease the pain of waiting? Manual focus is the only downside.

Again the Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus (STF) – LAOWA Camera Lenses is a k mount solution without autofocus if that works.

What for? A 135 f2.8 with modern design seems more useful. But your purpose may be aligned to your needs.

Internal zoom is typically (but not always) associated with focus breathing. I'm hoping the lens avoids major focus breathing issues.

Edit: internal focus not zoom and it depends on specific implementation. Thanks for the correction.

Given that other Pentax lenses have not been lighter than VC/IS counterparts I am skeptical that it will be lighter. I am guessing 800g myself.

Faster focusing is a given. I am 100% on board with that requirement. Lighter - not sure. Lighter typically means less optimized and the 60-250 does one thing very well - it shoots from wide open with great clarity. Reducing the range will help - as lenses from Nikon and Canon show - but I'm not sure giving me back 20-30% of the total weight of the existing lens to drop the range from 60-250 to 70-200 is sufficient.

I do think not having huge focus breathing is a requirement as well. That plus a lighter faster package will drive sales.

So help me understand the appeal of a 70-200 f/4 over something like a redesigned 60-250 f/4. Is it expected to be lighter? Cheaper? Obviously we all hope it will be faster focusing and use the latest tech there. Looking closely I see between 200 - 300g savings to Nikon and Canon lenses that are VR/IS and slightly more to those without VR/IS. Even so I'm not sure that a 1kg 60-250 with fast focus and full frame coverage wouldn't be more appealing than an 800g 70-200. I guess focus breathing would be the main area I see for improvement outside of focus speed. If the 70-200 had very little focus breathing and fast nearly silent focus I might see the appeal.
