Hey guys, I know I've not posted in ages as my only Pentax camera now has a dead meter and a slipping film transport, but I'm still keeping tabs on this thread. Some great stuff coming in here, I especially love Tuco's 6x7 work, Easytiger's street shots, PirateStian's slice of life, and have to say that Javier's latest B&W shots have a pretty distinctive graphic quality.

Meanwhile, I'll keep shooting away with my little Ricoh GR1 (great fun), and waiting for my new-to-me Rolleicord Va to come back from a thorough servicing.

Of course, if someone wants to donate or trade me a replacement for my near-dead MX, I'm all ears :D

I scan B&W in 24 bit colour, no exposure correction, sharpening or anything like that. The result is a flat, boring .TIFF, so I boost the contrast, blacks and sharpening in the Post Processing program, then 'desaturate' to get truly neutral greys without a colour cast. Seems to be the best B&W approach with my Epson V500 flatbed.

I find in-scanner sharpening to really emphasize grain, even on low.

Waiting for some 120 Fuji 160S to come back, but here's one from our first snowfall this fall. Ilford HP5+, Bronica ETRS w/ PE 50mm 2.8

Thinking of making a few prints from a 16:9 crop I did.

Tuintu, great results from the Xp2, so silvery and clean, love the wood texture on the house.

Easytiger: Sparse, clean, punchy colour shots, you seem to produce great results in monochrome and c41. Lab scans?

Loving the train station shots, Nesster

Roll 2 through my medium format SLR... obtained an incident meter and a wider lens, and brought it to meet my father for breakfast at a cafe by my workplace.

I'm liking that depth of field for a wide lens, wide open. Ilford FP4+ in DD-X 1:4 for 10 mins. Bronica ETRS & 50mm PE

I did take the filter off at night. I'm not too sure about Y2 and general shooting, as this was my first filtered roll in a while ( I've dinged the filter ring of my M 28mm f/2, and have no filters for my MF lenses). I'm pretty pleased with the tones, and it helps skies from washing out.

Also, when running ISO 400 in a camera that tops out at 1/500th and f/16, the Y2 gives me a 1 stop loss that is very useful.

Here's some from my first roll through a Canonet QL17. Y2 filter, TX400 devved 8min in DD-X. Shutter priority w/ AE lock seems to work well, and the lens is pretty sharp at middle apertures. (however, when I resize from LR I get sharpening artifacts) Night shot was 1/30th @ f/2.

I find the Bokeh on the Canonet QL17 to come off a little harsh (wide open, min focus), but for useability, convenience & speed of the camera (and cheap price), I think I'll come to grips with it. I snagged a fully operational one yesterday, and have a test roll of TX400 hanging off my shower curtain, drying. Hopefully have some scans ready after work tonight.

On frame 13 out of 36 of the Provia 100F roll in my MX. I hope the occasional frame hiccup doesn't occur.

Easytiger, fantastic street shots with bang-on exposure. Love the variety and content, (esp. 2nd shot) looks like the tri-x is giving you good tonality.

Luc, wonderful arboreal scenes with good use of backlight. Who needs colour to enjoy vegetation glowing away.

Javier, with slide film try a UV, or the aforementioned 81A to reduce blueish haze. I tend to reserve polarizers to kill reflection or boost colour saturation in shiny vegetation. Yellow and red won't do much until you shoot more B&W.

Javier, seeing you shooting with velvia sort of gives me an inkling of why Ken Rockwell has a warming 81A filter perma-mounted for all his film shots. But this latest batch of yours is nice, crisp and vibrant. It might be worth it to play around with filters and see how it comes out if you find them too blue.

Love it! Had to wipe down the camera after? These came out pretty well, slide film like provia and velvia can come out blueish, but it's easily correcte when scanning.

I got caught! This is fuji 400x, the whole roll came out a little soft and odd on the colours, nothing like I get with Provia 100F. Ah well.

Well I'm shooting with a waist-level finder and no meter, so it's taking some getting used to, especially the reversed image on the screen. But you're right, the clarity and tonality of the shots is incredible, I can tell the difference even at smaller print/resolution sizes. But to really appreciate it, you've got to see it big, at least full screen. A lowly 1200 DPI scan is still velvety smooth.

Although I do attribute that to using ISO 125 film that I processed well. I'm curious to see how the faster stuff turns out in terms of grain and tonality.

I sold the K 35mm f/2, great lens but pretty big and ungainly on the MX without the winder. I tried to split the difference by pairing my M 50mm with a M 28mm, but I'm switching lenses too much; 35mm is my ideal walkaround lens. See my Pan F 50 post a page or so back for some 35mm work.

They are indeed. The frames are beautiful, but the build kit is pretty pedestrian, mostly shimano nexus and off-brand bits.

We'll see how they sell next to the Pashley's and Batavus'.

Hey everyone, it's been a while since I've been on the forums, but it's nice to come back to this thread and see some great work from the likes of Luc, Douglas and Javier (and the rest of you).

Picked up a Bronica ETRS last month to enter the world of MF, (changeable backs! fast-syncing leaf shutters!) but until I get my first 120 roll developed, here's a couple of 35mm portraits from the summer.

FA 77mm ltd, Provia 100.

M 50mm 1.7, Tri-X 400 home developed.

Have some 135 Pan F 50 I need to scan this evening, I'm really looking forward to it as it was a hardship to get through a whole roll of ISO 50 film.

Mike Cash: Love your work with the TLR, and am a bit envious that you have the time and access to explore such photogenic locales. Much of what I've seen of your work seems to reflect traditional Japanese aesthetic... sort of a clean, focused, minimal composition defined as much by its absences as what is present.

Mikeengstrom: Results are pretty amazing for a laughable setup (i mean that in a kindhearted, props for the DIY way). Something about slide film that has a presence and clarity I've yet to see from colour negative shots. Love the atmosphere and rendering of those gravestone captures.

Mechanicaloptikal: Gritty, high contrast, and well exposed. I've shot quite a few shows where I basically have to ignore the meter and use experience. Never shot above 1600 though. Looks like the Rodinal and scan gave it almost a posterized effect, but even with the contrast, great retention of detail on the faces etc.

Did you share your shots with the band?

From my own experience, it's caused by the film touching the glass of the scanner, especially if it's curled. Of course this only applies to me using a flatbed with holders at home, but it's usually the case, and usually in the 'middle' of the photo.

Good to see you making use of the 28mm..... I remember some of your earlier stuff seemed to be taken from more of a distance with wide and normal lenses. I guess a place like Venice Beach is conducive for short range photography, but nonetheless, I prefer the perspective and feel you're producing with this focal length.
