Thanks for sharing this review.
I came away very impressed. The shadow recovery seems very intriguing to me especially. I'm honestly tempted to pick one of these up for mono landscapes and street photos. I think I'd enjoy it with something like a DA 15 and FA 31 to get a little bit of that "vintage" feel that I had when I dabbled in film photography a few years back. Mirrorless is more practical for me in day to day use, but I still enjoy using a DSLR from time to time after doing so for years. It would be kind of like having the spare car in the garage to take out for weekends for fun.

I've only shot with one Pentax camera (K3 II) and thought the colors were great, but didn't stand out as being significantly better overall then other cameras I've shot with (Canon 40D, Canon 7D, Nikon D500, Sony a7, Sony a7r III) except for a preference that I had for the rendering of the color green out of the Pentax cameras.
Of the images I've seen, I'd say that the Pentax 645D has the most "special" images for my taste when it comes to color, but that's completely subjective since I haven't actually owned or processed images from that camera.

Regardless of each individuals justification of purchasing this camera, I think it's really nice that it was created based on customer demand on a survey. These will always be niche devices and I feel like Pentax has been more and more in that niche category since they chose to not join the mirrorless revolution. I think this is probably a wise decision given the current market and puts the company into an interesting (and useful) place in today's photography.

A little off topic, but I wanted to give kudos to the OP for their images. Excellent stuff on there!

Looking good so far! I like prime lenses with character and this lens seems to deliver from what I've seen up to this point.

I think that the “open mount” that Sony uses is the key. In my opinion it was a very smart move, because it brought a lot of people to the Sony system due to the availability of more reasonably priced lenses from third-party manufacturers. Just look at the ones available from Tamron and Sigma for the system that work just as well as first party lenses. You also have the excellent Voigtlander and Loxia line for manual focus lenses with full exodus data and modern optics. Nikon and Canon refuse to do this because they don’t want to lose money on their first party lenses, but this limitation keeps me in the Sony camp.

Thanks for the feedback. I was in the kayak, which gives a lot of flexibility for composition, since I can maneuver myself for the best light and backgrounds. This is my favorite way to shoot, but I don't get to go out as much as I'd like.

Nice BIF shot! Great detail, lighting, pose and background. It’s not easy to get all of this right.

I agree that this is the main issue. Single point focus acquisition for stationary subjects is quite good (in my opinion.) ---------- Post added 09-30-2019 at 09:46 AM ----------
D500 AF is the same whether or not in lens stabilization is used. I like using "sports mode" VR for birds in flight, but it isn't needed for AF performance but to help a little bit in stabilizing the viewfinder.
