I decided to go with the Pentax. I just ordered one off the forum used for a good price.

Thanks for the insight. I’ve been looking through some images and the lens definitely renders nicely, especially for a zoom.

I definitely would like to get one of the big boys someday. I might rent the DA 560 sometime to see what I think.

Thanks for the advice. I think I’d definitely prefer one of the lighter options at this time to take advantage of the APS-C “reach.” I owned the Canon 70-200 II at one time and it was a heavy beast (but excellent)

Thanks Boris!

I tried the Tamron when it first came out and found it to be very good optically. The AF was really slow on Canon (my system at that time) but I've heard that it performs much better on Pentax because of their screwdrive support.

I have been shooting with Sony mirrorless since 2015 and recently added a Pentax K3II and DA 300 for my wildlife shooting. I have been satisfied with my Sony for general photography, but couldn't afford to add the 100-400 to my bag, plus 400mm is kind of short on FF anyway and the TC is expensive as well...

Enter Pentax. I was able to get a great deal on the used Pentax Camera and lens that costs a fraction of the cost of just the lens for the Sony. I even got the 1.4 tc and it was still cheaper.

I might be getting an ongoing gig helping document a new business in the local area. They would like for me to take images for their website, instagram etc. I can cover the majority of my needs with the gear that I already have, but I'm thinking that a 70-200 equivalent lens would come in very handy. (The company does a lot of outdoor events and is based around health and wellness). I was looking at renting the Sony 70-200 GM, but the cost of rental would add up pretty quickly. I also was looking at the f/4 version of the Sony, but that lens still costs around $1k (used). The Pentax 50-135 lens costs a fraction of the price and has a very good reputation.

I'm seriously tempted to pick one up. I wasn't planning on expanding my Pentax gear really, but the "bang for your buck" quality is hard to argue with. I also have been very impressed with my DA 300 rendering and the handling of the k3II. I like the small size of the a7 for 100mm and below, but for longer lenses I may start leaning more towards the Pentax. I do have a few more questions though before jumping in.

-How slow is the lens in AF on k3II?
-Should the SDM issues be a deal breaker?
-Would a Sigma 50-150 be a better investment?

I owned the 70-200 f/2.8 HSM on Canon several years ago and it was a "good" lens but it really needed to be stopped down to f/4 to maximize it's potential. My general rule is that I don't buy lenses that aren't usable wide open. Does the Pentax lens need to be stopped down as well?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
