You might find a Pentaxian in your area via the UK Pentax User site.

Not wishing to denigrate that lens, but was that not a classic case of someone who bought a great camera and lens but probably then treated it like a simple "P&S" - the K3-II deserves much better glass, especially at a parade where a wider focal range is generally far more useful.

"Expert"?

Well maybe, or simply someone who has just bought the camera/lens and actually learnt something about how to use it correctly?

People with "big" items of kit can be anything from a complete beginner with a lot of cash but no idea how use it to an old timer who has gradually assembled a comprehensive set of kit that he's very familiar with - but neither of them are/ever will necessarily be "experts".

Says someone who is almost certainly one of the latter group!!

Yes, the "joke" (was there actually one somewhere in your post??) did go right over my head - probably because it was, as I said, so confusingly written:rolleyes:

I know that "US" and British (i'm London-English BTW!) humour can differ quite a lot but I/"we" can usually "get it" (even with in-your-face so-called US humor!) - unless of course it wasn't actually very funny to start with! !

Your question is "confusing" to say the least!

Therefore, do you mean:
- Does (Ricoh-) Pentax make & cameras under other names? NO, AFAIK, they don't (just Pentax brand name cameras)!
- Do other manufacturers still make cameras under other names that are "Pentax compatible", i.e. with the same lens mount design and that can thus use Pentax-mount lenses?. NO, again AFAIK, they don't!
- Then, if those questions/answers still don't give you the required info, then WHAT DO you mean, or want to know???

Having bought 4x "brand new" Pentax DSLRs (+ 3x used ones) over the years, the only one I got my mits on before I bought it was the K-30 in a "Pentax-only fire sale" at the local Currys/PC World "superstore" - I tried, and really liked, it, and so bought it on the spot.

The other 3x brand new ones (GX10/K10D, K-5 & K-70) were all from internet sites (2 were "special New Year deals" from SRS in Watford, which was/is still a B&M store but I couldn't get there at the time), but only after having read a lot of reviews & comments - and none of those disappointed.

Agree with almost you say - except for the focus speed issue which we all "know" can be an "issue" with Pentax body/lens combos, which is why we need more lenses like the 55-300 PLM (and PDQ!) because, with more of those lenses (and some more f/w tweaks for the bodies) the "speed" issues should be quite well "resolved".

I'm not a "conformalist" - never have been! - 'cause I look to to what would work for me, and that doesn't mean spending loads of cash that I can't afford (much as,TBH, the Fuji XT offerings would be very appealing IF I could afford that:( )

Or a Nikon "entry level" DLSR kit to a lady in our U3A Digital Photo Group who, frankly, doesn't know when to use the 18-55 kit lens or the "tele" 70-300 alternative because she's sadly & unfortunately "not the sharpest tool in the box" (lovely person though that she is) :(

OK, roughly the same underpinning range of VAG (so not simply "VW"!) chassis' and drivetrains - but with its own (and much better!) "takes" on body & interior designs, and delivering "more bang for your buck" than VW itself. From a pretty happy 2007 year Skoda Octavia II estate/"wagon" owner :D

Not sure if anyone has posted this before (and apologies if someone has) but the current week's UK Amateur Photographer mag has a feature on Isabella Smith, from Collierville in Tennesse, who won the Young Travel Photographer of 2018 competition, and her dream assignment would be for National Geographic! Good on her!! :D

She uses a K-S2 with 50-200mm, 50mm and 18-50mm WR Pentax lenses :D (although she said that she occasionally uses her mother's EOS 7D :(), !!

Just watching an episode of the "Combat Dealers" series on the UK SKY "Discovery" channel about a UK dealer of WWI /WWII armoured vehicles (etc.) when one of the crew is asked to photo an old German Flak 38 20mm naval AA gun - with a K-7! :D

That one is one of the two Sigmas - the other one is an original version 17-70 - in my bag most of the time , and I wouldn't be without it in most situations.

A "bit late" (!) to reply, I know - but, as longtime Sigma user, I think you have the wrong idea of how bad/GOOD many Sigma lense actually are (OK, the superzooms and some of the very old 28-70s, are often c**p!) ! Look for good reviews thereof, and you will almost certainly find one or two that could "blow your mind" - but not your bank balance! - in terms of image quality and general "usability".:D

@Thorsanchez

Can't find your post about iPhones, but I had to point out the same "digital zoom" issue to the local U3A Digital Photo Group to which I gave an "Event Shooting" presentation this afternoon - and, I think, some of them "got it" :D

PS: most of my Pentax + (mainly!) Sigma shots got a pretty good reception:D.

As I said, they work well for me - and I'm only a short drive from the Sigma Imaging UK Service Centre, and they have always been extremely good at getting any faults/recalibrations fixed pretty quickly and at very reasonable prices (provided the parts are still available).

TBH, with, now, the exception of the PLM, all of my most-used lenses are Sigmas: 10-20 f4-f5.6 bought new a decade ago, and the 17-70 f2.8-f4.5 / 70-200 f2.8 non HSM (etc.) /100-300 f4.0 2nd version, which were all bought used. All of these still work well and I'm happy enough with them not to want to replace them with Pentax ones.

I have several Pentax 50s but rarely use that focal length, and no inclination - nor the budget - to add any more Pentax lenses,

Quite simply because most people who consider buying a "decent" camera - particularly an APS-C DSLR - have heard of Canon and Nikon, seen others using them and that's pretty much all that is on offer in the few shops that actually have any DSLRs at all - and because the Pentax brand is "invisible" to them in those shops and the online stores!

Had just arrived at the London Classic Car Show (London - the Excel Centre) this morning, when a guy came up to me and asked "Is that a K-1?"

Unfortunately had to say "No, it's a K-70" (and why? - K-1 is too heavy for me), and then outlined what it was (is) and why - having 3x other Pentax bodies - I had bought it recently (GOOD body, GREAT price = £395 from SRS in the Xmas sales!:D ), and what it has to offer. Somehow I suspect that he is now interested in Pentax because he said that he has a Canon "whatever"( but probably "entry level") but had given up on it in situations like this show because had to up the ISO and was not "impressed" with the results in those circumstances. :D.

I think he might be interested in this brand in the future :D

PS: unfortunately, best current price from a Pentax Pro dealer is now the SRS price of £595 with "free" f1.8 50mm lens - I paid £395 for the body a couple of weeks ago :D

PPS: saw a few Canon shooters with the flash "up", but didn't have to use mine 'cause, with a bit of practice (first time I had used the K-70 "in anger"!), it produced some pretty damned good images in the prevailing indoor lighting.!

Just found out that one of the new Members of our local U3A Digital Photo Group, which I run, has a K-1, which he is using to good effect (some extremely good nighttime shots!) in our competitions :D

It's been 2 years since the only other Pentax DSLR user left the group, and so it's great to see someone new who has one and certainly knows how to use it.

Of the 20 active Group Members, most use P&S &/or Bridge cameras &/or phones - or combos of those -, 3-4 use Panasonic 4/3rds mirrorless, and mabe only 3-4 (now +1) - use APS-C or FF DSLRs and we also use a phone &/or a P&S as the backups/carry-anywhere.

Monday, I ran a Digital Photo Group promo table at our local U3A monthly meeting - rolling presentation on the laptop, several albums of prints from members and various cameras and accessories, and including my K-30. Quite a few people came over to discuss things, including one couple who said they had a couple of Nikons (don't know which), and then the guy picked up the K-30 and looked at the brand name on the front - another case of the "classic" "Ah Pentax, knew about them a long time ago, but didn't know they made DLSRs!":(

Sunday, at the (UK) Shuttleworth "Race Day" airshow, getting there very early, I had put my chair right next to the flight line fence - went "walkaround" for an hour or so, and when I returned to my chair a family had taken up residence next to me. I then noticed that the oldest member (grandfather?) had a Pentax DSLR - which I, over time, worked out to probably be a KD10 with a long non-AF 400mm lens. Unfortunately for him, that was not the right lens for that airshow (an AF zoom of anything around 70-300 was about right), and so I then noticed he didn't actually take many shots during the show:(.

Mostly, my camera is in my "incognito" backpack or in my hand (with wraparound strap between the tripod bush and the body lug) because generally having to use a walking stick when out and about means it could easily slip off my shoulder. OTOH, at airshows and the like it's on the strap around my neck for quick access. No problem with using a Pentax-branded strap, although some Pentax sponsorship would be very nice:)
