OTOH, sometimes they don't because they keep their heads down - and the "management" uses the opportunity to get rid of those they consider to be "trouble makers" because they raise issues that the "management" would rather not have to actually deal with.

I changed job (often "involuntarily!) many times and finished up with (IIRC!) 6 private pensions + a State Pension - as rarely had I transferred one private one onto another when a job change came along.

Since, at least for some of the time, a number of private schemes were being wound up, I concluded that I'd best stay as I was because, it appeared to me, I effectively had a "distributed pension" which meant that, should one scheme fail, then at least I wouldn't lose everything (as some people in long term employment almost had). OTOH, when I finally ("was" due to an oil & gas industry recession) retired, then it was a long & complex task to make sure that I did begin to receive all those pensions.:(

Looking like a wasp (the insectoidal variety!) - pretty sure most of us have had to do that at times at work - can get very cold or sweaty if they give you the wrong type for the prevailing weather &/or season:mad:

Same sort of "rule" should apply (and might well apply in Oz!) in Australia when the weather for the Ashes, when held there, gets "too hot" in the future - "what's good for the goose is good for the gander"!:D

NO, he didn't buy a "Triumph 2000 sports car" in England because this is a Triump 2000 (or maybe a later version thereof) and it was a 4-5 seater saloon!
https://gomotors.net/pics/Triumph/triumph-2000-03.jpg

If it was actually a sports car then it would probably have been a 2l "TR3" or later "TR" model.

I agree that the "A" series engines (there were many versions, and well as foreign derivatives - including some from Nissan!) were of Austin heritage, but the Marina g/w was not - IIRC, it was actually from the Triumph branch (by then, I think) of the BL "empire"!

I'm somewhat "familiar" with that because the box on my 2nd coupe "failed" to the extent that changing gear became a matter of stirring the lever until you found the gear you wanted, and I had to have the box replaced - when, in fact, a repair would probably have been a matter of simply replacing the stick assembly because the locating pin in the swiveljoint at the base of the stick had probably just fallen out!

AH, and then a garage/"g/b specialist" would have told me that and charged me for an hour or two's work and
a replacement assembly - wouldn't they ??????

NO CHANCE, "that'll be about 400 quid (this was around 1988) Sir for a replacement box"!

It was quite a few years later that I found that that failure was quite common in the Triumph box that was fitted!

I think a very few Marina saloons or coupes were badged as Austins, but possibly were not built in the UK. Also, I think that some Marina vans were later badged as Austins - OH, the days of BMC/BL "badge engineering" !:o

Not a Ford "enthusiast" (ever!) but in the 60's/70's and possibly the 80's, not for no reason were "low end" (and some of the more expensive) Fords widely known as "Dagenham dustbins" due their propensity to rust!! :)

OTOH, didn't just stop by the 90's as one or two later models are known to be "rotboxes" - the original Ford-built versions of the "Ka" range are well-known to rust badly!

Probably true in some instances: the Anglia's model successor was the Escort - and, in highly modded & tuned Mk 1 & 2 form, it was a very successful racing and, particularly, rallying car. So successful, and "long-lived", that in fact one can now actually buy complete and ready for the road/track "new build" Mk 1's and 2's versions from several independent suppliers in 2023!!
(but they cost the proverbial "mint")

A few short replies to "catch up":
1) Yup "Doris" could have been a girlfriend's name - but, as I said, I never knew!
2) Witney - not been there, or lived in the area, for decades, so not been following "developments" there, although I did notice that Cameron was the MP for a time:(
3) Marinas - I had 2x 1300's but never had an oil consumption problem; reputedly had very bad brakes if you had drums all round, not front discs (which mine had), poor handling unless you fixed the springs and shocks (which I did) and big wheels (again, mine got). My biggest problems were burnt out valves due to modded high compression cylinder heads and driving them hard, and poor seats (fitted an aftermarket recliner to the 1st one, not to the 2nd because they were more comfortable but never slid back far enough for me). Main "claim to fame" was that I fitted cruise control to both to ease the leg room problems by allowing me to take my foot off the accelerator for short periods!
4) Roadworks - sorry to hear about all the problems that people had (and continue to have) but the council got our road done in a week (but only after years of continually chasing them to get it done!)

Actually, I think that the annual school holidays are a significant reason why they dig the roads up at those times of the year - school holidays => no "school runs" => work can start earlier in the mornings and then have fewer issues in the afternoons, and thus there will be far fewer disruptions to the work during the working day, and so the work gets finished quicker and also with comparatively fewer complaints from local residents.

That was certainly the case when the council had the road outside this house (and which has a primary/infant school at one end of it) dug up and completely re-surfaced during school holidays about 3-4 years ago.

BTW: the road really needed that work as it was in a terrible state before it was done, but now it is one of the best roads in the local area.:)

IIRC, "Doris" was a local "generic" nickname for "all" modified Anglias, not a name for any specific one! Just "went with that", but never found out "why" (not that I ever asked)!

"Back in the day" (the 1960's/70's) modifying s/h Anglias by fitting larger engines (usually Ford, but many others - even V8's! - were used as well), better g/b's, rollcages, suspension, wheels, etc., was very popular, especially in the Ford-centric (which I never was) youth of Eastern England, and in the motor/rallying clubs (I was a member of quite a few :) ) communities.

BTW: In our local (Witney in W.Oxfordhire) motor club, a modified Anglia was often called a "Doris" for some reason I never figured, :D

Yes, and quite a lot of what looked like alumium foil IIRC.

And that's why I posted about the event, as a warning to others who may not have been aware that this sort of thing can happen!

Nevertheless I'd still be very wary of those 6x big red smoothing caps - possibly disconnect them and separately "reform" them one at a time with a progressively increasing DC voltage.

PS: speaking from experience there!

Decades ago, whilst at school, I built a simple valve oscillator at home from junk box bits and then took it into school to power it up, and to show some other kids, in one of the science labs prep rooms.

Unfortunately ( or perhaps fortunately?) I turned the power on and left the room for a few minutes - only to then hear a BIG bang and to return to find the room filled with grey smoke! The power supply smoothing capacitor - which was probably very old and had not been powered up for a long time - had overheated and the contents expanded to the extent that it had blown out the sealant at one end. The cap can was completely empty and the shredded contents were spread across the room:rolleyes:

I thus learnt my lesson very early on!

You've never picked raspberries from my canes or else you wouldn't have said that!:(

FYI: the oldest bunch of canes are the decendents of some I knicked from a next door neighbour's garden after they moved out 45 yrs ago and I suspect they'd already been growing there for a long time (the houses are 1930 vintage!) - so they're not a modern cultivated variety which would likely be thorn-free.

And, BTW, I've also got some canes of a modern cultivated raspberry variety, and the difference in the taste is startling - the "old" ones are small but much more tasty than those from the larger cultivated variety.

OTOH, I agree about the short "shelf life" of raspberries - we have to be sure (not "shurely" - where did you get that from ?:D ) to pick 'em one day and then eat them (usually with Greek yogurt) within 2 days max, or else they go mouldy/"fall apart".

Frankly, I could never understand why people are so enamoured with, and be willing to pay the price for, strawberries - I'd much rather have raspberries or something very similar (but preferably without the thorns if I'm the one that has to pick them!)

Well, that email finally showed up in my normal email stream on the PC's late this afternoon - some 16 or so hours after VM sent it last night
PS: I also monitor my wife's VM email address because she often doesn't, and it hasn't even turned up in her's so far - and an another routine email from a different sender - that generally comes out very early on Monday mornings - only arrived just after 8pm THIS (Tuesday) evening!:(

Safe to say that this fiasco has strengthened my resolve to ditch the VM email system as soon as practicably possible!

Virginmedia Update at 12.45 UK BST:

On another forum I found out that VM subscribers in at least 1 other area seem to be suffering the same problems today (20th June) - as I said to one of those "seems like they fixed one area, only to cause same problem in another" (except that I put the latter part of the comment in the more explicit terms allowed on that forum!)
