Yes, definitely needs a V2 upgrade, and soon. I haven't had this much trouble with locking up and crashing since the launch of DCU4 (in 2008?)

I don't mean to be a pest, but I'm trying to understand this menu item. It is on Page 3 in the Custom menu, line 18. The choices are Off, Auto, Low, Medium, High. The series are good, but I think it would have been beneficial to have set Hold AF so that it was stickier, more persistent. It changed subjects at one point and lost track at another point.

AF-A allows the camera to change between AF-S and AF-C if it senses a moving subject. I found it useless on the K-x. I haven't tried it with the K-3.

I just guessed at some settings to get the photos in the other thread. I think this setting is critical and needs more investigation:
16. 1st frame action in AF-C
It was successful on Auto, but I intend to try Focus Priority next time.

This setting also needs investigation:
18. Hold AF status
Medium worked for me, but the setting should depend on how likely you are to hit a distraction or obstruction in the frame.

This setting seems obvious to me:
17. Action in AF-C Continuous
I set it for Focus Priority. I can't use a photo that is not in focus.

Bob, those are great bird shots. What settings were you using for BIF?

I did like DCU4. I will use DCU5 if they fix it.

I was a DCU4 fan, but so far I'm pretty annoyed with DCU5. It's slow and balky. I've adjusted some options which improve usability vs. the defaults, but there appear to be some glitches.

I shot a bunch of jpegs yesterday to test tracking. In Picasa, I can cycle through the jpegs, and zoom in and out quickly and effortlessly. In DCU5, the files take a ridiculously long time to load, and sometimes the zoom feature gets stuck and won't let me change viewing size. It's pretty sad that Picasa manages the files better than the native software.

PS The K-3 tracking is freakin awesome!

I agree, the highlights don't look blown, but they likely were before dane.dawg pulled them back in post processing. I had to do the same thing with my bird photos. In the old days (K20D & older) Pentax bodies metered extremely conservatively, rarely blowing highlights. Now they blow highlights regularly, which I don't like, but it decreased the criticism by magazine reviewers and complaints from newbies.

From the A400 samples I've seen, and as a former A*300 f4 owner, I'm confident sharpness would be there, if not better. Don't forget, you're used to seeing your A400 crops at 16mp, not 24. Fringing would be waaaaayyy better.

What do you see? Hard for us to judge without seeing the original scene. No blowout anyway.

I agree, nice set.

Dat is charp, mang!

Gotta love that crop-ability:
K-3, DA*300mm @ f/5.6, 1/1000s, ISO 560
