Don't forget that you are pixel peeping at 24mp resolution vs. 16. It is pretty well established by now that noise is the same at comparable resolutions, only differing in how much noise reduction is applied.
My current AF-C menu default settings are: 16. 1st frame action in AF-C - Focus Priority
17. Action in AF-C Continuous - Focus Priority
18. Hold AF status - Medium
However, I shot a kids' hockey game and had to use Hold AF status - High because the aluminum uprights holding the Plexiglas at every five feet around the rink were causing trouble.
I use 27-point expandable AF for BIF. I use 9-point for sports, and shooting a moving vehicle.

With my K20D, anything but Center Point AF is hopeless. With the K-3, I have had the best performance with Expandable AF, Center Point. I use all 27 points for BIF and do my best to keep the bird in the center of the frame.

I don't think the back button focus is a good idea for AF-C burst shooting. I keep focus tied to the shutter release.

Yes, considerably cleaner.

ISO 400, the main photos are full size jpegs, downsized to 1600 pixels for posting on Picasa, downsized to 800 pixels for posting here.
The three crops are under 6mp, so more than an entire K-5 image has been cropped away, then downsized to 1600 and downsized again to 800.

Congratulations! You held out for over an hour.
You tell me. These are from the same shoot as my original post. There's a three-shot sequence, followed by crops of the same three photos. They show that the K-3 locked on the subject in a busy frame. The main bird is tack sharp, the second bird, wires and pole are out of focus. |

We all have something to learn with this new camera. The menu settings for AF-C are foreign to me. I don't know whether I chose optimal settings for BIF or not, I just guessed. I'm not even sure that disabling SR is productive, because the SR on this body is supposedly different and improved over previous Pentaxes.
There may be some fine tuning required but my settings did work.

I went out to test AF-C and tracking yesterday. I have so many tack sharp photos of flying gulls, I don't know what to do with them. For a sample sequence, go to this link, hit Slideshow. https://picasaweb.google.com/bonhommed/K3BIF#
I used the DA*300 f/4. Settings were AF-C, auto-select AF (27 points), SR off, TAv mode (1/1500s, f5.6). ISO in this set varied from 280 to 400. There are some AF-C settings I was unfamiliar with: Custom Menu item. Parameter - Setting I used
16. 1st frame action in AF-C - Auto
17. Action in AF-C Continuous - Focus Priority
18. Hold AF status - Medium |
