A smartphone also works quite well for this and is more practical. But a Coke bottle is definitely cheaper to get.

Joke and humour are always tricky, even between people sharing the same language. Depending on where you live, or who you talk to, the same joke can be irrestibly hilarious or make you look like a dumb.

This reminds me something one of my english class teacher told us when comparing learning english vs french (for a native english speaker like he was). You can quickly get to a basic, casual, level in english, but from there it's a lot of work to get a higher level because there's so much exceptions and weird things and regional variations (like US and UK english rules that aren't exactly the same, with anything in between or outside). On the other hand, french is the other way around. There's a lot of rules to master before even getting to a basic level. But once you can get to this basic level, it's not that difficult to progess toward a more formal or litteral level, since the exceptions really are exceptions and the rules are the same wherever you are (even if some regional variations are present, they mostly are for spoken casual level, not for written and formal levels). Must say I agree with him...

But what is even more puzzling than languages are social codes and formal forms and levels. Which are differents in each languages, and often different in different parts of the worlds or country sharing a same languages. Although I'm now somewhat fluent in english, these formal and social codes still are a source of stress when talking to an english speaker: I don't want to say something seemingly rude without realizing it, or being too formal or casual (although it's usually better to be on the side of too casual)... Sometime, politeness formulas will not make any sense whe translated from one language to another or, even worse, will make sense but with a different meaning... But, luckily for me, I have and always had a clearly notable french accent when speaking english, so people know right away I'm not a native english speaker and are somewhat forgiving for any mistakes I could (at least, I hope so!).

I would certainly not say that most forum members think this way. Sure, on the tens of thousands members of PF you will surely find a few ones, some of them even being quite active and vocal. But this doesn't mean they speak for the majority and certainly not that you have to agree with them.

In the same way, you will find photographers of all levels and talents. Like in any other photopgraphy forum, you will find bad photographers to highly skilled and creative ones. Just follow the advice of the ones you like and try help the others (or just ignore them, but it's not as nice as helping). Being an old-timer doesn't necessarely mean being a good photographer. It all depends on what your aim for. Some people will try to improve and get involved deeply in their photography, other will be happy staying in auto mode, or not much more, all their lives. Again, this is not specific to Pentax users. If you're looking for them, you will have no trouble finding people using Canon or Nikon cameras with kit lenses and be quite happy with pictures not much better than a smartphone...

As for buying gear, for most people the question is really more "Why not ?" than "Why ?". I have plenty of stuff I don't really need (not only in photography!) but I still bought them anyway because "Why not ?". There's nothing wrong with it if someone can afford it... Photography gear isn't different than most other things you can buy. Should I sell my car because I could take the bus to go to work ? And what should I think of my neighbour who has a BMW while a cheap compact car would still bring him wherever he needs ? Should one stick with entry level photography gear even if he could afford higher end ones ? Unless being an adept of some kind of voluntary simplicity philosophy, there's no reason to stick with low end if could afford better. And there's no reason to care about the reasons making other people buy the gear they bought.

I would even dare to say that most people, even professionnals, couldn't care less about shooting models... It's kind of a niche and certainly not some kind of photographic nirvana to attain. People, and particularly hobbyists, just do what please them, with models or not... And that's perfectly fine like this.
