As a matter of fact, I think most people here are aware a lens is involved :^)
That is such a stark but obvious contrast that it seems like leading the discussion with a result in mind. Your comment makes a point but not all points. I could suppose you are stating your opinion only but your post reads as if you are imparting to me knowledge unknown. Schooling on the difference between a small camera with large lens & a large camera with small lens is useful and I will add that "small" is more than the sum of its parts.
Writing that the space saved is only few mm here and there does sound reasonable. However, a few mm here and there can greatly affect the volume of an object... Writing 13mm on this axis isn't as great an impact as 80mm of the waterline because 80 allows for a smaller bag and stating that as a simple fact makes a point but not all points. Perhaps I have missed a particular bag that is part of the discussion but, if not, your point is a little bit disingenuous. It isn't possible to state that x size in one dimension makes more or less impact than y size in another dimension when fitting things in the bag There are all different sizes and shapes of the bag and it is very possible that 13mm may bump a user into the next larger bag.
As comprehensive as an argument may be, there are always other things to consider. A person arguing the size difference between a K3 and K1 is negligible does have a different idea of small than myself and perhaps a few other people here :^) People have successfully argued the KP is a good (small) size and that has been a popular and accepted position! Shouldn't be a far leap to believe people would also like a small camera with more "traditional" Pentax styling.

Yes, the K5 was a good size, I think. The K3 was a little bigger and this may have been to give a little more camera to grip.. who knows. I don't think an APS-C camera that is the size of K-1 and also the size of D500 would sell well for Pentax. The camera would not be a D500 and would give back the advantage of smaller size for APS-C.
Comparing a KP to K5 (both so, so similar in size) isn't an easy one to make. It is like comparing a convertible to a coupe. KP is a whole different camera and ..I think it's hard to compare ergonomics across the two :^) [ unedit..]

Pentax wouldn't make another K5-size camera. The K3 is too big. I bought a K-1 because it has a K5 inside and I couldn't be happier. Much better than the K5. Size is just right.

And BEFORE the wrist strap suggestion & while writing my post you quoted just now, I thought you were talking about holding the camera while taking pictures... reh described a standard technique you wrote sometimes requires doilies and salad forks (dainty) and is unsuitable for running and etc. Since he was talking about taking pics at that time, I thought you were as well. I later decided your comments were about holding the camera during non-pic-taking activities... whole different container of fish.........

Goat rodeo is a fun term I like to use for mare's nest or whatever else describes confusion and/or frantic activity. I don't think there is a rodeo but there is a goat or two of misunderstanding and misinterpretation loose in the room :^)

Pinch grip is what it is called
It is not as strong and not as comfortable. Longer fingers may not wrap comfortably around even the fat KP grip and so finger tips will bear the load keeping the camera in hand and off the ground.
Not directed at your post now, but there have been a handful of ways to accommodate the smaller grip size when not taking pictures : slings, clips, put it in the bag, hold lens barrel, hand it to your assistant. Of course, two hands when taking pictures makes the smaller grips not so troublesome. The KP design is different from other Pentax cameras but not so different from some cameras from other manufacturers... I'm not sure I would like KP design v. the now typical dSLR design and, more so than the grips, I am wary of the locations for the shutter button and front command dial.

"try before you buy" usually a pretty safe argument to make. In America, it isn't really a practical argument. Most of the people here know it isn't very easy to see Pentax cameras before buying so people are left with comparing Pentax cameras to other cameras they are able to see/hold/use. For instance, I know I do not prefer shutter button on body of other cameras I own so I will make a leap I will not prefer it on KP and suggesting that this is simply because I haven't ever seen one isn't practically helpful...
In America, my choices are :
1) live (fairly) close to someone who has the camera and who will let me take a look
2) order from on-line to take a look knowing I am going to send the camera back...*
3) travel outside the country **
* I don't do this because I think it is wrong.
** If I am going to pay for travel to New York B&H, I prefer to bundle that money with other and go somewhere interesting.. I have visited camera stores in other countries to see a Pentax display but that wasn't my only reason for visiting the country as it would be my only reason for visiting New York :^)

And my suggestion about the wrist strap wasn't an attempt to make the KP suitable for you. You preference for larger grips seems to be some because it is easier to hold cameras when you aren't taking pictures. A wrist strap could make that even easier because the camera would stay attached to you even with a relaxed grip and this is why I suggested it.

Whole different lens size/weight than yours but the reason I don't use my homemade wrist strap to keep the camera secure in hand when I am not taking pictures is because I just dropped the camera in its holster when I wasn't taking pictures. When I was holding it waiting for whatever moment I thought I needed, I had hand(s) on it. If my camera + lens didn't fit in the holster, I would probably use a clip. Even with small lenses, I either have hand(s) on or the camera is in its smaller holster. If carrying it one-handed, too easy to be bumped by other people in a crowd and have it knocked out of my hand. whichever. etc.

I am mentioning no further secrets to my camera holding sauce for fear of either jinxing myself or ..something
Plus, I don't think I know what is a side grip [my right hand holds only the side of the camera.....]

It's not really a mess... it is a different style.
I am sure I wouldn't like the shutter button on the body. I haven't held a KP but do use other cameras that have the shutter release on the body and I do prefer the release on the grip. With the release on the grip, I don't use my fingertip to trip the thing. I lay my index finger over the release and can ..tense the muscles in that finger and make the shutter go. I don't ever press (press down) the button, so to speak, and I think this is a good thing.
But that doesn't mean the KP is a mess....

I bet you will be in luck. Looks like most of the newer cameras have the play button on the right. I think it is better as well.

Would a wrist strap help keep the camera in hand ?
You wouldn't be able to put the camera down quickly if you needed to but the camera would not slip from your hand if your grip loosens due to surprise or trying to keep your balance...
There are several brands of big and bulky and heavily padded wrist straps. I copied the strap design/orientation and sewed a wrist strap from grosgrain and velcro. If the padded wrist straps are shoes, mine would be a sandal. It is so light, I can grasp the camera with the wrist strap unused between my palm and the camera grip and this is no more uncomfortable than having a neck strap between hand and camera. Takes a little while to get it strapped on (the heavy padded ones are easier to manage but more.. bulky) but it comes off easily.
All that said, I don't use it. I made it to see if I would like it but I don't bother with it
Anyway, an idea, maybe.. maybe not :^)

I figured you had in mind the 55-300 is a fairly light lens, and it is, so a smaller grip still works well.
I figure you have in mind heavier lenses although they may also be 300mm focal length.
With the comments about running and etc, though, it seemed to me there is are very different grip requirements in your world! I don't run with my camera. I have made risky moves where I probably should have first put the camera away. I have sometimes held onto the barrel of the lens because that felt more.. secure than holding the camera grip with the weight of the lens and its length creating leverage as I move/swing the camera.
The grip reh describes is pretty good even with little or no grip. Left hand holds the weight & right hand points/positions the camera. I am not making an argument that grips aren't necessary, though. There are reasons why cameras have grips and have had for years. With my first gripless camera, I left the body half of the ever-ready case on so I had more to hold.
Plus, trying to have a little fun : how do you grip a camera to take pictures while running ?

You specified -native- lenses in bold.
I am not talking about native lenses.
Do you have a reason, other than grafted lens adapter, for the look of the lenses I am talking about?
If not, did you introduce a straw man argument, bringing up -native- lenses :^)
+ you write "...you are talking about third-party lenses...". It is possible you have misread my posts so I reiterate I am talking about Sony lenses as I have written twice before.

I don't think he is talking about holding the camera like a dainty tea cup...
I don't think he is talking about ...running and gunning ?
I don't think he is describing a grip that is useful when the camera is ...down on your side.
I am sure he is describing what is pretty much a standard grip when trying to hold a camera steady.
If you are running and taking pictures and taking pictures with the camera down on your side, you have a different style and will, of course, benefit from other than a standard grip technique :^)

Well, the native lenses wouldn't be designed this way, would they be ?
I am talking about lenses designed for another mount and then adapted to the short registration mount...
Lenses released under Sony name have a bevel from maximum circumference to a reduced circumference at the mount end of the lens. This reduced circumference is an inch or so. I admitted my perception might be incorrect but this style of lens design has not been adopted by other manufacturers* so how do you explain the way these lenses look :^)
* except long focal length lenses with large aperture made by many companies. these lenses also have a length of lens with reduced circumference at the mount end but, really, it isn't possible to confuse this necessary design with the Sony style.

When I think Sony, I also think integrated lens adapter
My perception may be dated or just incorrect altogether, but seems to me like many Sony lenses for their mirrorless system are lenses made for longer registration distance with an adapter tube grafted on. These lenses have a smaller diameter at the back.. I thought that was a waste of space and advantage of short registration distance but don't recall (may have missed it all) much complaint about this in forums or even the DPR :^)
Grafting adapters to the back of existing lenses is a way to quickly fill out lens portfolio when making a mount change. Lenses with built-in adapter might be received more openly [because they are "new"] by people than simply being told by the manufacturer to purchase and use a separate adapter with the same old lenses made for the old and (re)tired lens mount :^).

I don't know much about trucks but I do know some new trucks that are diesel do not release huge clouds of black smoke while some new trucks that are diesel do release clouds..
What vehicle option is there that makes the difference?
Do the smoker trucks have a special performance package?
Is smoke made because of something people do to the truck when they get it home?

I am surprised more people haven't commented on the old lens you used...
I have no comment at all about film resolution.
But you report to us good resolution with an old lens while a few posts here have knocked the 35/2 because it is old and can't be as good as hyper corrected new lenses.. their opinions seem at odds with your results using an old lens :^)

I also bought the 55-300 PLM this past fall. I don't have fancy long lenses and I think this will be good for me.. I have been happy enough with an old Tamron 70-300 Di LD xII etc etc. The 55-300 is enough smaller to make a significant difference in how I travel carry versus that Tamron.

Possible he means Mavica is what Sony managed on its own before the experience it bought with Minolta.
Minolta always makes me think of Minos and that makes me think of Minotaur and that is pretty close to Minolta...

I am a snob in that I enjoy the traditional camera company names :^)
I recently bought a heavily discounted Panasonic ?? (I am looking at the camera now and can't find the model..) to replace an Olympus EPL6. I am a little okay with Panasonic; I liked my 2005 Panasonic bridge camera. My first real camera choice was between Canon & Olympus. My first digital was Olympus. And the EPL6 sure is prettier [and costs more] than the Panasonic ?? black box. The Olympus looks less like a digital device and more like a ..camera :^)
+ Panasonic model is only on the bottom tag with FDA warning

And the 11-18 is more lens than the K-70 camera could ever need...
Where would that leave me ?
I think the lens is fine for the K-70
I can't imagine an argument otherwise as long as the K-70 is used as a camera...
+ be honest.. the lens would be a waste on the K-70 as a bookend.

I gathered the D always meant designed for digital.
This had to do with coatings to reduce reflections on glass sensor
Maybe design of barrel to reduce reflections...
I never thought it meant optical formula specifically designed for digital.

When the DA limited lenses were updated, they got both new coatings and curved aperture blades.
Less better stars but more better out of focus elements.
I haven't read through all this thread so maybe the aperture blades turn out to be curved...
I really didn't think I would see any changes of any kind for small lenses.. not anymore.
Let me be the first to complain they should have done this to the FA28 :^)

There is absolutely no reason that a little speaker can't be hidden in a camera and that the little speaker can't make screw-drive noises. Just for fun, imagine people looking serious with lenses the size of Chunky soup cans that go ee-aw ee-aw. [better there is room in new lenses for an ee-aw speaker]
