K3ii replacement

I can disable the touchscreen when I want. I use the touchscreen to:
- focus in live view (it's faster than using the joystick)
- view images (zoom in and out very fast, scroll the images)
- change some settings if I'm in live view

If it's cold and I don't want to use the touchscreen, I can use the camera in the traditional way (press some buttons and use the joystick). Being used with smartphones, the touchscreen for me is more useful than GPS or video. :)

Well, I skipped K3 as a replacement for K5 II and went straight for K3 II because it supposed to have improved af. K5 had better af than K7, K5 II had better af than K5, K1 II seems to have better af than K1. Only K3 II had the same performance on af and I paid the price of the release date for K3 II instead of paying a lot less for K3. :) That was the last time I bought something without testing. Since I start testing all my gear, I can't be more happier with my gear. :) Now I know that if I want something is because that something meets my expectations. :) I bolded expectations because that's why there are a lot of debates when comes to gear. Each person has different expectations.

Luckily I'm always wearing clothes when I go out shooting and with my t-shirt I can clean the touchscreen easily. :D

People must have wishes (it's perfectly normal) and I'm sure that the next model of K3 will have improvements. But people who in other threads seems to be perfectly happy with their cameras are now wanting things which consider less important in other discussions. That's what I said, not that one can't wish for something better in some areas. :)

Touch screen is very nice on my 5D Mark IV. And it works flawlessly also. :)

It's funny how people are very happy with their current Pentax cameras when they are debating things with other people a little less happy about Pentax current features, but when comes to wishes, almost everybody wants:
- af at the level of D500
- a lot more focus points
- video like Sony or Canon
- better flash system and connectivity
- touch screen
- etc.

Are you happy or not with your cameras? :D K3 II replacement seems that must be a real improvement given the number of features I've seen mentioned in this thread. I do hope to see most of them if not all in the next Pentax APS-C flagship, but I also hope that if this happens, you have some money saved because it ain't gone be cheap.

Their leaks and their marketing. :D If marketing is not in Ricoh's agenda (maybe due to lack of finances), a few leaks here and then may help them because Imaging Resources, DPReview and cancan media will do some free marketing for them with these leaks.

I didn't argue this statement and never will. My dissatisfaction are generally orientated to other things that have nothing to do with the performance of the cameras released in the last couple of years.

I was reffering to K3 Mark II replacement in my initial comment and to be more precise, about a third wheel added to the upcoming body. 5D Mark IV, D810, D5, etc. are just examples I used to argument why I find important the number of mp.

I was used and I'm used to certain models from Canon. I'm also used with K-5 II, K-3 II quite well and I took more time with K1 than most of the internet reviewers.:) I'm also very familiar with some Nikon cameras, with a few Sony (I will never put my hands again on a A7 or A7 II :D but that's another story) and with 2 Fuji cameras because I go to meetings, I rent gear, etc. And when I say that I'm familiar them it means that I can operate them on the fly and I have taken at least a couple of thousand images with them. K1 has the exposure compensation and ISO buttons in perfect positions. Bracketing, HDR, and the other stuff are not needed on the fly, but I know that it's handy to have them available with just 1-2 clicks. That's why I said that what others implemented in their cameras, My menu in this particular case, has 2 big advantages over the third wheel:
1. it doesn't require to reduce the space of the top LCD and it can be accessed by pressing the Menu button (one click to access the Menu and on click to select the function you want if you have touchscreen capability); These were 2 sugestions that I made, other than what others have said regarding, af, high ISO and so on.
2. you can add to that menu anything from the general menu. You're not limitated to 7 functions which are availabe on the wheel + another 2 function from the wheel that are already available on 2 dedicated buttons.

Thank you for clarifying this aspect.

You see this as an ergonomic thing and maybe because of this we have different opinions. I see this function (my menu) as an option with more choices to choose from (you can choose 6 or 12 important things from the general menu and you can change those 6-12 things anytime if your needs/priorities changes) and in the meantime as an way to leave what is already good (large top LCD in this case) at the same size.

It seems to me that some comments are being made based on the sympathy or on the antipathy for the person that say something different regarding his needs/wishes/opinions for a camera that theoretically should come sooner or later.

We're talking about the K3 Mark II replacement and each and everyone said what he want from the new camera and some provided some arguments.

@monochrome, I understood your argument and I wouldn't have anything to say (on the contrary, I would agree with you completly) if the new technology that you reffered to would not replace or reduce another functionality that for me it's more important. In this particular case, a third wheel will reduce the functionality of the top screen which I find it very useful. K3 Mark II canceled the opportunity to use the small flash as a controller for off camera flashes by removing the on camera flash. I wasn't enthusiastic about having a GPS (which I never use) instead of the flash. It's a different thing to add new technology and keeping also the useful functions and it's a different thing to add technology by replacing or reducing the functionality of other functions already available and usefull on older models.

@rondec, you choosed to ignore my sugestions and focused on contradict me without a real argument and you added a little salt and peper to spice up the topic by adding Canon in the conversation in order to leave a wrong idea to the people who read these comments. Let me clarify it for you.
1. I find the top LCD important and having it as large as it is right now on K-3 Mark II is handy.
2. I find useless the third wheel and as I told to monochrome, I wouldn't care about it as long as is not affecting something that I find usefull (in this case the large top LCD). But it does affect it and so I expressed my wishes and I also offered 2 features that I would like to have on the K3 Mark III instead of that wheel. My suggestions were:
- adding a customisable My menu (Sony shooters screamed all over the internet regarding this feature and Sony listened and they implemented it in their latest models) and leave the top LCD as large as it is
- ad a touchscreen which will make the My menu function even easier to operate

You acted offended and you said "It really does bother me where someone says that just because they don't use a feature that no one would use it." I could say the same thing about this affirmation of yours; I quote you "Who cares if there are 24 or 28 or just 20 megapixels on the sensor as long as the overall performance is excellent. For me, excellent means high dynamic range at base iso and the ability to keep that (along with low noise) at higher isos.".

Maybe it does bother me when someone says that just because they don't care if the new camera has 20, 28 or 40mp as long as it has excellent overall performance (dynamic range in your case). Why? Maybe because I do care about the number of MP of the new camera. Maybe I do want a 40mp camera because I have the option to crop when needed or to print large when a client demands a large print. Or maybe I do want a 20mp camera instead of a 28 or 40mp camera because I don't want to invest in a new computer to deal with big files, or because a camera with lots of MP will not be forgiving with my lenses or with slightly human errors. Those action cameras (D500, D5, 7D Mark II/1Dx Mark II, A9, A6500) have few MP for certain reasons... And as much as D850 is considered to have excelent overall performance, I would not want it if I have to choose between it and a D5 for wildlife or sports, even if D5 would have had 7fps. Why? Because the af is better on D5, high ISO is better, color accuracy is better, and so on.

So you see, the lack or the presence of a third wheel may be a lot less important than the number of MP of the new camera. But I didn't "jumped to your neck" saying that I'm offended that you didn't thought at the others when you just expresed your thoughts and wishes.

I also do find offensive those people who talk about the supposed performance of the cameras that they haven't touched. I do find offensive when people say that the end result between a K1 and a D810 (or a K-3 Mark II and a D7200 to be on topic) will be pretty similar given the fact that both cameras have the same number of MP. Why I find it offensive? Because these are just speculations based on what's availabe on the internet. What valuable information can you or anyone else that didn't shoot with both cameras can provide me other than what's obvious (the same number of MP on both cameras)? I tell you, none, 0 (zero) valid informations. You can't tell me about the mettering between these cameras in different conditions, you can't tell me how the skin tones are handeled at high ISO, you can tell me anything about handling, af, noise, using TTL flash, etc. On the other hand, if I make the mistake to say (I'm always talk about the gear I put my hands on) in a topic where someone ask about K1 vs 5D Mark IV that there is no dynamic situation (a scene that involves movement) in which K1 can beat 5D Mark IV, but if I continue and say that for astro or for landscape there is no way that 5D Mark IV can replicate the Pixel shift image, the comment in which I say that K1 beats the 5D Mark IV is completly ignored and some of you will focus in trying to argue my conclusions regarding the af performance even you didn't handeled the other camera.

I tend to ignore comments like these in which people act as they have been offended and add "a little venom" at the end of their comments by making allusions that I shoot with Canon so that they can move the attention of the others away from the initial topic/discussion. But Rondec, your affirmation regarding the number of MP of the new camera is similar to my affirmation regarding the third wheel and its usability. You expressed your thoughts/wishes without thinking or caring about the others needs. I wonder, if I would have made that affirmation regarding the number of MP of the speculated specs of K3 Mark III, would you have been bothered as weel?

You don't have to be so offensive because I didn't said that Canon is better or worse. I use Canon, but I shoot quite often with Nikon, Fuji, Sony and from time to time with Pentax. 2 dedicated buttons (ISO and exposure compensation) are already in perfect position. The other function from the third dial are not necesary needed on the fly. That's why a customisable "my menu" which is found not only on Canon bodies is in my opinion more useful than the third wheel because I can put in that menu 6 or 12 most used settings and access them with one click. And if my preferences changes next month, I can reconfigure My menu to suite my needs.

This way I have more control and I can benefit also from a larger top screen.

It's strange at first, I admit. Being used to K5 II and K3 II placement of the buttons, it took me about 2-3 weeks to get used to Canon placement of the buttons. Now it's strange to use Pentax when I shoot with Pentax cameras from my friends because I'm used to Canon buttons. :)

Anyway, a "My menu" option and a touch screen on K3 Mark III, with the current top screen from K3 Mark II would be more eficient than the third wheel which I find quite useless.

A personalised My menu is as simple (or even simplier) to use as the third wheel. Just 2 clicks and that's about it. :) One click to open My menu and one click to select the function you want/need. And you can do that using the right hand, without moving the camera to the left hand.

Why anyone would use the third wheel for exposure compensation or for adjusting ISO?
These are 2 settings quite important and using the dial to adjust them means that you have to take away the camera from the eye and you lose time in the process. Not to mention that there are 2 dedicated buttons next to the shutter to make these changes very fast.

A larger top screen (like the one from K3 II) to view the settings is more useful than the third wheel, at least in my opinion. But with or without the third wheel in the upcoming K3 Mark III, there are other areas where Ricoh should bring improvements.

I'm one of that guys. :) I kind of like shooting with mirrorless and I like Fuji cameras, but the EVF gives me headaches after 15 minutes of use. Lately I came to the performance of shooting half an hour with a mirrorless before the headaches occur. I gained extra 15 minutes because I opened a VR Cinema lately and I started to watch VR movies which gives me the same headaches as EVF does. I'm sure that if I "train" my eyes it will be better, but I'm not so sure that I will definitely get rid of headaches forever by watching through EVF 2-3 more minutes each day.

I don't think it's important to have a camera which could be considered by everyone as the ultimate photographic tool. It's enough if I live with this thought, that I have the ultimate photographic tool in my hands. That way I don't need to blame the camera for not doing what I wanted it to do and I concentrate in improving my technique. :)

As long as we have choices, it's up to us to find a system (mirrorless or DSLR) suited to our needs. :) Some people told me that it's hard to change the system because they invested in lenses and will lose too much money switching brands. If I sell all my Canon gear to jump to Nikon for example, I can buy the same lenses and a similar camera with the same money, without loosing a cent. I did the math and some researches a few days ago just for fun because a friend of mine told me that he is more into landscape and he wants to change his 5D Mark III with a D810. I've searched top sellers on the second hand market and guess what, it's doable to change the system without investing a single dolar in the new one. But people want (when they change their current system) a brand new camera and brand new lenses and that will cost more money of course. It's just that if you really want to change a system and you look for second hand cameras/lenses from other systems to replace your second hand system, this argument of being to expensive to switch systems is somehow questionable. The only problems I see is when:
- you have exotic lenses like 400mm f2.8, 600mm f4 because this kind of lenses are hard to find in good conditions at afordable prices.
- you have a poor second hand market (as we do have in Romania for Pentax) and you have to buy from other countries
- you have specific needs that a system can't cover (like sports if you want to invest in Pentax, or medium format if you want to change the 645z with something from Canon, Nikon or Sony)

The Pentax/Ricoh bigest (or one of the bigest) problem is the lack of marketing for their products. K1 would have been a dream camera for landscape photographers shooting with Canon or Nikon, given the K1's price and features and KP would have been a very good option for traveling light but in the same time benefit of very good image quality. As long as no one knows about Pentax (young generation in particular) and the shelves from photo stores don't have Pentax products, its hard to convince someone to invest his money in a good system like Pentax. I guess that as long as Ricoh doesn't lose money with Pentax cameras/lenses, their last concern is gaining market share by promotig/advertising their products.

I have no doubt that K-3 III will bring some overall improvements over K3 II, but I do hope that maybe Ricoh will be more marketing oriented this year also because there is a matter of time until Canon and Nikon will enter also in the mirrorless terittory and it will be even harder for Pentax to retain their current market share without making some noise over their products.
