Photokina 2018 Q&A - What would you ask Ricoh?

Not really. After CP+ we 'knew' that they were working on a K-3 replacement, so those who "need" that particular group of capabilities had something to look forward to. Ricoh was unwilling to repeat that assurance, and stocks of K-3ii are running very low, so those who "need" that particular group of capabilities are having to ask "now what?" In this case, knowing the future path would not deter purchases {because they don't have much to sell}, but it might keep some with the brand who will otherwise explore other brands.

That's basically what my wife says ..... but even she has to admit that the end of our hikes through woods is closer than the beginning {we've been married 39 years; our first walk was roughly 41 years ago}.

In the past, Pentax has been willing to give hints of the sort "We have started working on a K-3 replacement" and "We are focusing on K-mount" {when asked about MILC } - both from the CP+ interview earlier this year. Even Adam indicated he felt they were usually taciturn this time ..... they weren't even willing to repeat the previous hints.

In May 2015 my Canon Rebel died; our budget was stressed at the time, so month later I purchased a used-like-new {shutter-count=3} K-30 for roughly $250. Eighteen months later, Pentax released the KP .... our budget was in much better shape, but I couldn't justify "retiring" a perfectly good camera with so little use on it, even for such an obviously superior camera, so I wasn't bothered by the decision "of necessity" I had made the previous year, because I knew I could purchase a KP anytime that became important to me.

Now, at age 70, I am thinking in terms of "one last camera" - when I purchase a camera, I will assume that nothing will follow it. I could purchase a KP right now, but I would second-guess myself if Pentax announced a 'superior' camera {within my budget} six months later - so I will "sit on my wallet" for awhile until their directions become clearer. I will continue to get the fine service from the K-30 that I have been getting, but Pentax won't get my money quite as soon.

I'm sorry you feel my post was aimed at you; it was agreeing with what 6BQ5 had posted - I didn't even notice your post.
The purpose of this thread has been outlived.
@Adam; should close threads like this as soon as the interview is complete.
There are already at least two threads for people who want to talk about the GRRRR.

BTW - but I was glad to see you show that others classify the GR as a point-and-shoot.

I was expressing my opinion .... I could have said "oh well", but I was willing to discuss it with you.
If you don't want to discuss any more, my answer to you remains the same.

It turned out that I should have listened to Asahiman's words only.

I don't know how "the majority" feels .... I do know that many people expressed disappointment in how this worked out.

You, yourself, said "I was hoping for more too"

Tell that to Adorama and B&H.
They classify cameras as "Medium Format", "DSLR", "MILC", and "point-and-shoot"

There is variation within classes. There is a big difference between a Canon EOS-R and a Canon M-50, but both fit into the class "MILC". There is a big difference between a Nikon D5600 and a Nikon D850, but both fit into the class "DSLR". Ricoh can call it whatever they want to ..... calling it an "ishcabibble" wouldn't create a special class for itself. It is a camera you basically use as you would use a smart phone - you point it in the general direction of something of interest and press the shutter button .... no one singing its praises has claimed any more for it.

I call them as I see them.

Both B&H and Adorama classify the GR family as "point-and-shoot" cameras, along with the WG - I am willing to add the adjective "lame".

To my eyes, this "leak" was a PR stunt to build interest in what the company was doing at Photokina at a time when they aren't willing/able to provide anything for those looking to the company for a K-3 followup ..... I'm sure you could see that in the responses. I might have been satisfied with the Photokina presentation if they would have been willing to provide even a hint of where they are on replacing the K-3, but now we seem to know even less than we thought we knew after CP+.

I am glad that some people were happy. I was not.
I am glad that some people were appreciative.

Not necessarily - they could be working on three or even four bodies in parallel right now ..... releasing nothing right now but planning to make a big 'splash' in the "centennial year".

{Color added by me} None of the GRRRR, KP, K-70 can be construed as a "flagship". That is the important point. Many Pentax users have become used to having an APS flagship; stocks of K-3ii are running out, and some users are getting nervous - that is why all the questions and disappointment about the interview. Personally, I understand this; I hardly ever use burst, and, when I do I typically use the slower rate, so either the KP's smaller queue or the K-1's slower rate would work for me, but I had never considered a K-7/5/3, and this is a real consideration for those who do currently have one of those cameras.

Because of @Ashahiman's words, I have thought about a 24mb FF camera; putting a 55-300mm DA lens on that kind of camera would give me around 9 usable mb - I could deal with that {in 2003 when I first was thinking digital, I established that 6mb would give me what I had gotten from Kodachrome}, but I'm guessing many users would feel "cheated". If the only way to get fast long bursts would be 24mp FF, several less expensive FF lenses, and a TC, would be essential.

I understand all this, and mostly agree with it
K3ii replacement - Page 111 - PentaxForums.com
but considering current inventory levels I believe Ricoh would have been smart to reaffirm what they said at CP+, not because we 'deserve' this, but because there has been so much angst over it. Personally, I currently plan to purchase a KP someday - unless I see something that fits my wants/budget better before then, but there are people who really do need something at the K-7/5/3 level, and they're starting to feel like they are working on a high-wire without a safety net.

We may never know who was actually behind that stunt. I did get into trouble for implicitly saying it was a lie, by saying "the GRiii is 'a lame point-and-shoot camera' ". They did get our attention, but all they really succeeded in doing was infuriating some people who would have written off Photokina, but now feel "we've been played".

When I look at cameras I see shapes. When I handle a camera, I want to feel controls .... external controls that allow me to stay out of menus. Before I purchased my Q-7, I was using Canon exclusively for twenty years. The Q-7 was very comfortable, because the controls were similar to what my the Rebel had. When the Rebel died, I purchased a K-30, which was very comfortable because the controls were similar to what the Rebel and the Q-7 had. I'm guessing that both Canon and Pentax retained industrial designers, who found optimal ways of organizing the controls. Perhaps even Panasonic has received advice from experts.

This is not true.

A K-3 is like my K-30 - the top of the prism housing is essentially flat.

The S1 is like the K-1, the K-3ii, and the KP - the prism housing is the bottom half of a four-sided pyramid - all three resemble SLR cameras of thirty years ago.

The S1 has no design elements from the K-3, but like the modern Pentax cameras designed just before it, seems to have borrowed from SLR cameras of the 1970-89 period.

I purchased my first SLR, a Pentax, in 1979. I've typically carried just three working lenses {normal, telephoto, wide-angle} in my bag, so it was reasonably inexpensive for me to switch to Canon in 1995 when I liked their EF/USM lenses so much. Likewise, it was reasonably inexpensive for me to switch back to Pentax in 2015 when I had processor issues with two Canon Rebels in a row. My current plan is to purchase a KP in another year or so - but I don't have to ..... if I don't see real life from Pentax, I might get the Canon M-50 I've been admiring.

I believe Ricoh realizes the most valuable asset they got when they purchased Pentax is Pentax users - they can't take advantage of this asset by ignoring us. If they don't stay current, we won't purchase whatever happens to be out there. Some of us may hang around longer than others, but our using old stuff won't help them any. If they want anything from us, they need to 'freshen their line'.

GRRRR has only LCD - I believe MILC is pointless without EVF; if they contructed QP or K-0n again with only LCD it would only reinforce negative views of MILC, so I'd rather than they not do such a dumb thing.

They are still selling Q-S1, but the stock looks very limited.

They have sold out stocks of K-01 and all other Q's. Q-S1 survives under 'benign neglect'. Likely they are selling from stock {if I had loose money lying around, I'd purchase a Q-S1 just to see what the manufactured date is}. No evidence of any development of any MILC .... and based on latest GRRRR, I wouldn't want them to develop another MILC.
