That may have been your point. My point is that defects which cannot be seen in normal viewing matter only to someone who uses the photo in a abnormal manner.

When I shot film, I would sit viewers behind the slide projector;
today, I am happy with "small" pictures and unhappy with pixel peeking,
because I want the image to be viewed the way I took it - looking at the whole image at once.

This just shows how use by Pentax shooters differ. I have taken photos at just one wedding - at my daughter's, who got married shortly after I got my KP in Black Friday 2018. I frankly don't care what the out-of-focus areas look like. I do take lots of wildlife photos, and my issue is that they be in focus quickly with appropriate magnification and at a reasonable cost {and I don't want too much to lug around}. The lens I use most of the time is my "77-420mm" ..... a 55-300mm PLM with a 1.4X TC semi-permanently attached.

It depends on what you are shooting, and what you are shooting with. With my KP, I have gotten some shots at ISO setting of 25K that show no noise, so you would have no reason other than reduced DOF to shoot with wider aperture, and that doesn't fit into my style, so I am quite happy with my DA 18-135mm.

Is this assuming an "APS-C" camera? A person might have a completely different view with a K-1 or K-1ii;

I would be happy with a DFA TC that would make some of their DA zooms more usable on "FF", but they can provide only so much, I guess.

I believe that Pentax is working it out one camera at a time. I still believe the K-1 originated as a way of using old film lenses in this modern world; if they are thinking of extending their "FF" line, they will have to extend the line of new affordable DFA lenses, but they are no where there yet.

It isn't a DFA lens. That would make me sad if I owned a "FF' camera .... but I do not. It and the 1.4X TC would wonderfully on my KP, and I feel sad for those who have not / can not use it.

Yes, they have both the DA 55-300 f/4-5.8 and the DA 55-300 f/4.5-5.3 PLM. The second is so much better in speed and noise than the first. I own both of them. I wonder how many would have been sold if the second had been a DFA lens instead of a DA lens? I'm not convinced that many go to the K-1 series thinking of photographing animals {remember the reaction to it as a "K-3ii replacement"}. I expect the company is better off this way.

Since the DFA 150-450 is a f/4.5-5.6 lens, those who want "constant wide" may will not be satisfied at all with this choice.

LOUD lenses were my main reason to go from Pentax to Canon in 1995, but by 2015 I had discovered many other reasons for coming back.

I don't usually think in terms of lenses that old, partly because I these days I want weather-proof {even though I hardly ever subject my body to it} and partly because I have always hated the noise made by in-body focusing. Thank you for reminding us that they do exist, however. Pentax was obviously mindful of them when they created their "Advent Calendar".

I cannot think of any shots I have missed because of focusing with either lens - that is my measure of focusing.

With the 18-135mm DC lens and 77-420mm (*) PLM lens, I have two-thirds of a great trio. My Sigma 10-20mm uses the screw-drive, so it is neither quiet nor fast, but I guess a wide-angle lens doesn't need to be ..... and I don't use it nearly as much as the other two.

(*) My 55-300mm PLM is semi-permanently attached to a DA 1.4X TC; I find that the combination still focuses reasonably quietly, fast, and sure on my KP.

I took xmeda's comment as more positive than you did. The DA 18-135mm DC is a fine lens; I have never timed them, but the PLM motor probably is a bit faster, but both are plenty fast and accurate for my use. From my pov, saying the the DC motor gives you almost as fast AF as the PLM motor is a compliment to the DC motor because the PLM motor is so good.

Most of my KP photos are taken with one or the other lens - and my wife loves the quiet.

A person can often do what he has to do. I took the following color negative photo {handheld} with a Canon Elan in 2005. The lens has a maximum length of 300mm and a widest aperture of something like f/5.6 at that point. I was using ISO 200 film, but the players tolerated my use of flash {yes, I had a front row seat for this one}. I would have loved my current 55-300mm PLM lens, but this was two years before I got any digital camera. This is the type of sports photo I like to see and take - four players, the ref, and {a few} fans all in the picture.

According to reports, the "PLM" motor requires a fairly light focusing unit to move; that is reportedly why it is a f/4.5-6.3 lens.

Not very useful advice when trying to photograph many American sports. In 1976 I was a grad student {read poor} when I took the slide below with my rangefinder camera {45mm lens}; the "student section" in this {and many American basketball arenas} was in the 'nosebleed' section; they moved individual seats around, but I knew a guy who showed in the pregame that he could touch back wall and side wall and ceiling trusses simultaneously - I happened to have a near-front row seat for this slide, I believe.

According to the DoF calculator I consulted, the lens we are talking about, at 200mm f/4 should give 3.36' on an APS-C sensor, 4.82' on a "FF" sensor if the subject if 50' {width of standard college court} away. That is probably best amateur sitting in the stands can hope for. If players are running around .....

My point was that he can have the money {from the client} to do what the client wants, while I have only myself. If the client wants shallow DOF, he must provide that - I will provide what I want - maybe deeper DOF - only if I am able.

On a standard-sized basketball court - even 300mm can leave the photographer in the stands, even when he can move around some, a long way from the photo he wants - I know from experience from when my daughter played.
