My experience shows that 35mm Kodachrome 25 was worse than 16mp, so don't go back to that.

The 'accelerator' has alleviated my need for flash or tripod in most situations.
I hope they provide something more sophisticated to meet @biz-engineer's needs also.

Some years ago my Mother was talking about a visit from my Dad's brother. After seeing her Canon AE-1, he said his son {my cousin} had a camera like that - but several steps better. Some people like to brag about how little they spent and some like to brag about how much they spent - so few talk about the 'output'.

If you look at current lineup for sale at B&H, most likely the company will just put a new model at the top of the line, and current models will slide down one position. We have nobody other than ourselves to blame. The K-1ii was barely a year old when members here started speculating about a replacement - there is nothing wrong with the K-1ii and no compelling reason for Pentax to release a replacement right now.

Part of the issue is that they evaluate cameras based on what they think a camera should deliver, rather than based on what Pentax aims to deliver. Their evaluations are much like Consumer Reports - whose scoring system often greatly differs from what I am looking for.

In 1995 I switched from Pentax to Canon because the Canon EF/USM system was so clearly superior in my eyes {and ears} to what Pentax was offering at the time. In 2015 I came back to Pentax because I had several unfortunate experiences with Canon Rebel bodies. Thus, I have no experience with recent and higher-cost Canon equipment, but the DA 18-135mm DC or the DA 55-300mm PLM lens mounted on my KP gives me performance indistinguishable to my eyes {and ears} from the comparably priced Canon equipment I left behind in 2015.

As usual, we are back to talking "best"; exactly what that means depends on which era you are talking about. Whether it means anything depends on what your other equipment is and what you are pointing it at and with what intention. Several years ago, I mounted a Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 lens on my K-30; this lens was originally kitted with the Super Program I purchased in 1983. I was surprised to see that the K-30 was giving me photos visibly sharper than I had ever gotten with Kodachrome 25 in my Super Program - even 16mp digital is that much better than the best of color slide technology. Today, I could purchase the "Fat Fifty" and mount it on my KP; I don't know exactly how it would compare to the Takumar 50mm f/1.4 or the Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7 on that camera - but why would I do that? In general, 50mm is an awkward focal length for me on that camera, and I really doubt I would notice the subtle difference between those lenses unless I intentionally took one photo of the same scene with each one and then studiously compared them. Even if someone gave me a K-1 or a K-1ii, I doubt if I would purchase a "Fat Fifty"; $1000 is a lot of money to me, especially since I already have an uncounted number of lenses that can do 50mm, and I don't pixel peek. "Best" is for a fairly limited number of perfectionist artists.

It turns out that even "bad" EF-mount lenses aren't that terrible; everyone seems to want perfection at low cost these days.

Repeating a falsehood does not magically turn it into truth.
You don't seem to understand that there are significant hardware changes between the two cameras.

The 'accelerator' was much more than a new kickstand. Those who called it "just a facelift" showed a serious misunderstanding of what was going on there.

I am expecting Pentax to release a 24mb FF camera. That would be slightly lower-priced than the K-1ii but wouldn't compete much with it, while increasing the market for DFA lenses

Allegedly, the original reason for a Pentax FF camera was to make good use of all those fine old lenses out there. Those fine old lenses are still out there, and as photographers like @Kerrowdown; have demonstrated they can provide wonderful photos when mounted on a K-1.

If I had won K-1ii that @Adam gave away at the end of August, I would have used the FA 28-105mm and the Sigma 70-300 I've been using on the K-30 lately. In no way, a I prepared the prices for current DFA lenses, so this is how I would have made the camera usable to me.

This is just the opposite of what we have been seeing from Pentax lately - more sophisticated not simpler, more expensive not cheaper.

The KP already is in that gap, the K-3ii replacement will go higher in that gap, and a lower end 24mp FF is also a possibility at some point. Don't assume a lack of cameras planned based on what is available right now.

I won't make any claims of quality for these previously posted images from my KP - each at ISO = 204800, but I do feel good about the way colors are preserved {I did have to hand-focus in LV} |

Your experience with both camera stores and auto dealers is way too limited.
I went with our daughter when she purchased her Dodge SUV, used, at a local Ford dealer. The sales persons were very professional - not "slimy" at all - they do not negotiate, they just showed what they had and honestly presented it to her. The sales persons are on salary, not commission, and knew at least as much as the two of us put together. When I've had mechanical issues with my Ford Fiesta, their service people have given me a good explanation and provided options to keep it within my budget.
There is a camera store on the other end of town. They don't sell Pentax - I'd have to drive two hours south to find that - but all personnel at the camera store are knowledgeable and helpful.

I drive a Ford Fiesta which I am perfectly happy with. Our younger daughter drives of Dodge SUV, because ten years ago she slipped on black ice, hit a tree, and cracked a vertebrae, so she needs something larger to make her feel safe. Maybe your family is driven by style, but not all of us are.

The only video I take is by accident. On occasion I would put my K-30 into video mode by accident; I often overshoot LV with my new KP and get into video. I would prefer a camera without video because I'd waste less time taking video when I meant to do something else.

Much of this depends on us .... the guys who spend the money. Beginning last year, I had never spent more for a camera than the $700 I spent on a Canon EOS Elan film camera kit in 1995. I had been watching the KP, but its price of $1K was just plain more than I was willing spend on any camera. Then, at year end the price reached the magic $700 mark - and after another day of angst about what 2019 will bring, I purchased it.
