Would you use it at f/11 or would you be willing to tolerate vignetting / soft corners at wider apertures?

My account began in the middle of the adventure. I began with 'box' type cameras in the 1950's, including one that used '620' film; by the time I purchased my first 35mm rangefinder camera in 1969, I already knew that an ability to adjust shutter speed was the most important asset to my developing interest in photographing railroads {and the graduation money I had would cover this camera, but not any MF camera available to me then}. By the time I purchased my first SLR in 1979, I knew that an ability to change lenses was now my way to progress. By 2007, when I was ready to go digital, APS-C was my affordable path forward. Over the next eight years, I learned that an APS camera overall met my needs better than any FF camera {I still had working "FF" film cameras over this time period}. In fact, when @Adam gave away a K-1 last June, I chose to avoid the 'excitement' ; By July, I decided that using the K-1 in crop-mode would "be OK" when using a 55-300mm lens, but it was the "best" path for me only if someone else were purchasing the K-1. In 1976 I had used birthday money to purchase a '110' camera as an experiment, and had established the value to me of a 'pocketable' camera; the Q-7 was just the latest in that sequence. Even though I was a math major, I didn't need arcane calculations to do any of that.

When I first got my Q-7, I discovered that it was better on most interior shots than my aging Canon Rebel was ..... all I had to do was to take a few photos to see that; that was a very educated decision based on actual facts. When I purchased a K-30, I found that there were fewer places where the Q-7 was superior - many of them being a result of the Q-7's size and whisper quiet leaf shutter .... again an educated decision based on actual facts. Now I have a KP, and the Q-7 is getting even less use .... guess what - another educated decision based on observation of actual photos. Without "equivalence" I already know where to look for comparison issues, but there is more than just size of sensor involved in superiority, and there is no way to fit age of design, actual implementation, and similar issues into a mathematical analysis {the 'accelerator' is giving me fantastic results, for example}

So ultimately that is the same discussion. MF could gather more light than FF if people were willing to spend enough and lug enough. For some people, either cost or weight makes the appropriate FF lenses 'unavailable', so entire discussion comparing FF to smaller formats is a waste of electrons. People weigh options and then make decisions.

By their logic, we should all be using medium format.

I use zoom lens, but my logic is the same. Zooming, I never think in terms of focal length, unless curiosity causes me to look afterwards.

Yes, I know about those discussions. I'm not trying to get an exact match - I'm not interested in "subject isolation" or a certain level of noise - just good photos.

Of course sensor size is a dominant factor for the size of a lens; IQ is another dominant factor.
A smaller sensor requires a smaller column of light which enables the lens to use less glass.

In the photo below, the two lenses give nearly the same view when the silver lens is mounted on my Q-7 and the black lens is mounted on my K-30,
but the silver lens is smaller even though it lets in more light per unit area of sensor and contains in-lens AF and aperture 'motors' while the black lens is all manual.

These are all sensor issues, not lens issues.
No change occurs in my K-mount lens when I move it from my Super Program to my KP to my Q-7.

Especially with the Pentax approach of putting so much control literally, physically, at our fingertips, rather than burying power somewhere in the menu system.

I was responding to comments about sensor size. My light meter asks for f-stop, plus ASA, to determine shutter speed; even when this light meter was constructed, exposure depended on the three "triangle" components, not on whether I was using medium format, 35mm, or even Minox film. To the degree of accuracy involved in setting values on a light meter, then copying a shutter speed to the camera, any lens (*) set to f/2 will result in the same shutter speed at a given ISO value and ambient light, regardless of whether I am using that lens on my KP or on my Q-7; the Q-7 sensor will receive 1/9-th as much total light, but that is exactly the amount of light it needs to record the photo. At a given ISO value and light condition, every lens (*) set at f/4 will provide the same image on my Q-7. The 'issue' is with the sensor, not the lens; that is my point.

Yes, that was my point. How an image is rendered depends largely on characteristics of the lens, but exposure depends on lens setting {not lens identity} and the sensor.

(*) assuming light from lens fully covers entire sensor.

I had always thought my hands were "normal" size, but KP with smallest grip feels 'just right' to me. Oh well. :D

I understand the controls on my KP are similar to those on the K-1 {it doesn't have top LCD, but I don't miss what I've never had}. Once I got past my first day, the only confusion I've had is repeatedly putting it in video mode when I was intending for LV mode :D:D - otherwise, operating three e-dials has been very natural

Thank you.

A few more comments, repeating what I said last week, just after the ceremony:

The "pro" was using a Nikon camera - I believe it was a FF body, but the only thing I know for certain is that she was using a 85mm lens {I asked}, which required her to go back, back down the aisle for each increase in size of the group being photographed - and I helped her remove four chairs in the front row so they wouldn't be in the way of the "entire party" and "entire family" photos. Not how I would have done it, but she was doing it, and neither the bride nor the groom saw anything unusual about this.

The "pro" had each pair down the aisle stop at a particular point {where 'light is best'} for a couple of photos - no need for instant perfect focus, and she had the opportunity to take more photos if she didn't like what she saw on her replay. Again, nobody seemed to think this was odd or unusual.

I used TAv {1/125, f/5.6} for the photos I took during the ceremony {yes, I had pre-placed my KP at my seat a few minutes before the processing began}, which called for ISO 12800. She had a flash on her camera, but I was never aware of its going off. The bridal couple returned from Wisconsin a couple hours ago {they consulted with me about routing since we've had some unpleasant weather the past few days}, so they haven't seen any photos from her.

My major point in this is that she seemed to be taking a conservative course - not gambling on anything such as AF.C or lighting - and her actions didn't annoy her perfectly normal clients. Even though she was using Nikon, she wasn't depending on any of the features that we are told an events photographer must have - but I don't know how many true Bridezillas are out there who demand seemless photography.

I believe standards have changed. A generation ago, the way Takumar rendered scenes was 'special' - now if its not corner-to-corner sharp at widest aperture, people aren't interested ..... regardless of other qualities. I was ageeing with statement by @Class A that achieving this modern concept of "perfection" results in much larger lenses than was required to meet the earlier standard.

Yes, a small sensor collects less total light, so it is up to the processor to make good use of it and to the user not to "out drive his headlights". The light is ultimately gathered by the sensor, not by the lens. A f/1.7 K-mount lens will perform roughly the same on my Q-7 as does my f/1.9 Q-mount lens, even though it is much larger.

The new DFA* 50mm f/1.4 lens will funnel basically the same amount of light to the sensor as an old Takumar 50mm f/1.4 lens does even though it is much larger - but today people are much more focused on corner-to-corner perfection, which accounts for the size difference in this case.

Neither did we thirty years ago - adjusting focus control to make image sharper has always been a winning - but slower - strategy.

I certainly agree with this. With my KP, I have to use LV to focus in low light. I am fairly certain that CDAF remains slower than PDAF at any given light level, assuming PDAF will work at all, but it is in focus when it claims to be in focus {no front/back issues}

Canon engineers have over 30 years of experience with the EOS-EF mount; I am guessing their experience tells them they needed a wider mount throat to get the AF they wanted, and they shortened the flange distance also to get the EOS-R mount. If they had gone with the EOS-EF mount on their FF MILC cameras, they would have had to go with a thicker body, which many here say is the reason Pentax shouldn't stick with K-mount for MILC; I don't agree with that logic - looking at the size grip they burden those cameras with. Incidentally, someone who doesn't want to purchase the new lenses doesn't have to. The Canon adapters - both EOS-FF to EOS-R, and EOS-FF to EOS-M, are fully functional .... an EOS-FF lens mounted on a Canon MILC is just as good as it was on a comparable Canon DSLR.
