I don't think "Rupert" would agree - he's the one who asked once if a passer-by had given artificial respiration to a squirrel who was road-kill.

They could also redesign the whole thing. It is conceivable to me, for example, that they could add a layer of latches behind the sensor pixels, on signal transfer each pixel to a latch, and then read the latches serially.

Part of the issue is speed, part is power surge, and part is heat generated. Traditionally, having several separate teams working on the project has always been the best way of finding an optimal solution.

My original comment was that leaf-shutter is fine for me. I made no claim beyond that.

For years I've been trying to get away from flash, because virtually none of my photography is localized to a small area, and lighting up a large area is beyond my budget. This is one of the reasons I'm thrilled with the high-ISO performance of my new KP. To me, leaf shutter means quiet.

My first two range-finder cameras had leaf shutters.
My Q-7 has a leaf shutter.
I've never had a problem.

Maybe my preferring "comfortable" DoF is an explanation.

I view wide aperture as the cost of low ISO and low light - not a preferred place to camp.

A couple more thoughts I had while taking my wife shopping since my last posting:

(1) a leaf-lens would be a temporary solution - I'm guessing Sony will have sensors with practical "global shutter" available in the next few years, so unlikely Ricoh would want to develop new lenses for such a time-limited market

(2) many active members here are members of the "never EVF" club, so any system that depends on EVF would have limited popularity.

I guess that might be OK for those who use a tripod - or if the K-1iii has a hybrid viewfinder. For outside photography, I have a terrible time using my Q-7 because of the lack of a viewfinder; a collapsible Hoodman is a permanent resident of my Q-7 bag, but using it is truly awkward {before I got the KP, when the Q-7 was my first choice for taking birding photos, the "birding" bag contained a large and awkward Hoodman-clone that screwed into the tripod mount}

If I understand correctly, a leaf shutter works best if it is embedded in the lens. Each not-"toy" Q-mount lens has an embedded shutter; the official Pentax K-to-Q adapter also has an embedded shutter, which should be a suboptimal solution, especially since it is virtually always used with 'longer' lenses. The reason I particularly like the Q-mount leaf-shuttter is that a primary use of my Q-7 these days is under circumstances when quiet is preferred. Even when I am holding the camera, I can barely hear the shutter. If Pentax were to make a leaf-shutter solution available, they would have two choices - use legacy K-mount lenses only with an Electronic Shutter or use legacy K-mount lenses only with an adapter which has an embedded leaf shutter. When using adapted lenses with my Q-7, I prefer to use the adapter with an embedded shutter, because I'm never sure what issues might arise from rolling shutter.

And until global ES becomes available, pixel-peepers will be complaining about the distortions that are local manifestations of rolling shutter.

Most comments by @normhead are attempts to help someone via thoughtful comment - not really hostile "warfare".

So a "Speed Graphic" {I believe that was the one with both focal plane and leaf shutters} is out of the question :D

No camera is perfect - in most cases, capturing an image involves some kind of compromises. In the Age of Film I used Kodachrome 25 to get finer grain, but that forced me into lower shutter speeds and/or thinner DOF when sun was hidden. I'm guessing 645 or Hasselblad would give more leeway .... but that would require more from your wallet.

I guess they should make their larger-sensored cameras like the "Q" family, which has a leaf shutter in each lens. Could they build a leaf-shutter into the camera mount?

Didn't some larger format cameras have both a leaf-shutter in the lens mount and a focal plane shutter?

You have every right to do photography the way you want to, but your wants may not be consistent with your wallet.

I try to learn from others - In response after response you sound very hostile; this is a Discussion Forum, and you should expect others to discuss also .... you may even learn something from them if you actually listen.

Actually, I heard him saying that you are being too "picky", too busy studying leaves that you don't backup and enjoy the trees. Do you also study daVinci's brush strokes and not see how they work together to make an image?

I thought that was implicit in my wording

You had the answer a day agoI'm not sure why you keep arguing {I thought you were exiting with #157 last night}, nor even why this 'issue' {that not even DPR noticed and you found a solution to some time ago} has you using such excitable words.

I look for as much quality during travel as I do any other time - in fact some of my best photos are taken then - but my most expensive camera is the KP that I paid $700 for - with the service you're getting from the K-1, I'm not sure why you have it at all.

I assume most people mean what they say. When someone complains about a problem here, I am willing to believe it is important to them. I am retired, so I read a lot here - and sometimes I read older posts to get background on what is said today; sometimes I benefit directly - for example, I was well prepared when my K-30 started exhibiting the truly serious Dark Image Syndrome. I have seen a number of people present a problem, not get a satisfactory solution, say "I give up", and never post anything about anything again here. With the knowledge I have now, and the experience we collectively have had since then, I believe a solution could be provided now to some of those old problems, so I find those situation to be sad, and I don't want that to happen to you.

I have little experience with many issues, but I have acquired a lot of knowledge. I am sorry you feel that I am arguing - I am trying to understand why this is such a seemingly important issue to you and whether there is a clear explanation, since so few people seem to be bothered by the same issue. The normally "picky" DPR was very positive about the K-1. Most of the K-1 related complaints I see here are about "detail loss" on the K-1ii; from the example photos, I believe that if shutter shock were an issue for them, it would completely over-whelm the issues they are complaining about. so the shutter shock issue must not be that common. That is why I became involved in the first place - but by now I think more of my comments have been explaining why I think you are important enough to respond to than in responding to your actual issue. But if you get your "fun" that way, then just keep on complaining.

added: From your comments it is obvious that one major difference between us is that I am willing to work around problems. For example, I purchased several aperture-ring equipped lenses {that is an FA 28-105mm lens on my K-30 in my signature photo} so I could continue using it even after it was totally afflicted with Dark Image Syndrome, even though that would restrict me to 'M' mode with green-button metering; in response after response from you, I hear "I don't want to use my K-1 that way" when someone suggests a change in how you do something. I am sure Ricoh will be happy to sell you a GRiii.

Where did I ever claim to be speaking for anyone other than myself???

I'm merely telling you what my experience has been.
I've seen a number of people who write as you do - get no solution, and stop - not for the hour, not for the day, but apparently for ever.
