Imaging Resource's CP+ 2019 interview

In 1979, when I purchased my first SLR, I purchased a Pentax because it and Nikon were the two I was familiar with, and I was hearing more positive things about Pentax than about Nikon. I moved to Canon in 1995 because I really liked their EF/usm AF solution. When I got tired of Canon bodies in 2014, I didn't know Pentax still existed, but then I found the Pentax Forum.

OK, so here you are comparing K-3 released in 2013 to the D500 released in 2016. I am quite sure that the D500 does do dynamic AF better even than my KP released in 2017; if dynamic AF is your primary interest, then perhaps the D500 is best for you - but don't expect Pentax to build a camera just for you. The D500 has an extra processor to perform AF; Pentax chose to devote their extra processor to tidying up images shot at higher ISO setting - and not surprisingly, every study I have seen shows that the $800 KP handles high ISO values better than the $1500 D500 does. Pentax has very much brought their cameras into the next decade, just not in the way you are wanting.

added: something in your words didn't seem right, so I checked; someone reading them would believe that the D7200 was "long in the tooth" when the K-3 was released, but in actuality the D7200 was released in March 2015, almost 1-1/2 years after the K-3 was released

Depends on pixel density of the sensor. :D If they put enough pixels on the sensor, then you could crop down to 6mp or so {that is basically what I often do with my KP .... except for the wren that landed within 15 feet of me while I was sitting on the deck, and I had to quickly zoom out because I was using a 55-300mm lens with a 1.4X TC!

I don't either - but I've been surprised by the number of people who have complaints about the KP, so there must be aspects of camera usage I don't understand.

When Ricoh releases the K-3ii replacement, everyone will benefit.
They cannot expect to 'benefit' when some of their best customers feel abandoned because they ran out of product n before product n+1 was even close to ready.
I was laid off by an aerospace company when "we" lost contract after contract {the one that pushed me out the door was won by Boeing} - eventually the company got around to firing the VP over my area.
That is how it works - you need product customers want ..... you benefit company when they benefit you.

I didn't realize the purpose of photography was to benefit Ricoh.

I don't see the content as being disappointing at all - there is new information here:

1. The 645 line is not "suspended" in the same way as the "Q" is. They will add to the line if they have additions that make sense.

2. The next DSLR will not be MILC - in particular whatever is being done that will change silhouette of the K-3ii replacement, that camera will not be MILC.

3. Yes, the K-3ii replacement really is coming.

4. Separate teams for Pentax-label and Ricoh-label cameras means that spurt of Ricoh-label cameras at year-end/beginning didn't cause long pause between K-1ii and next Pentax-label camera.

Since Google doesn't provide a translation I, {a very satisfied KP user} will: "a long time has passed with no APS-C 'flagship' on the shelves, with little expectation of seeing a K-3ii replacement in the next six months".
