The big difference between now and the time the K10D was released is noise reduction software is immensely better. Of course nothing can replace a properly exposed image. Success with High ISO is not clipping your shadows and having an image were you are not pushing the limits of the dynamic range. I routinely shot my K10D all the way up to ISO1600. But I mostly kept it to 800 and below. I'm so old school I rarely take my K-1 above 1600 even though I shot all the way up to ISO20,000. The K10D was the camera that finally convinced me to ditch film. I am need to clean the sensor on my K10D. It has sòooooooo much dust on it. The last I did use it I remembered how well it could capture reds and greens.

Thanks, the lighting was actually against me but the CCD sensor is what saved it. It is definitely not a highway bridge. There is barely enough room for two cars. The bridge is in Princeton, New Jersey and was built in 1792.

The last firmware was released 4/22/2010. This was firmware 1.31 which improved stability of SHDC memory cards. Version 1.30 added the ability to use SDM and HSM lens with built-in motors.

Well I finally dusted off the old K10D and charged the batteries. I have not used it since November of 2014. I took it with me the other day while out at the Gardens. Man I had to remember where all the buttons are at. I mounted the DA*50-135 on it and took a few photos. I got there right at closing so I did not have a lot of time. Felt good to use it again.
Try as I may I cant not duplicate those reds on my K3.
A crop of the reds, almost no post processing here, there are times when this old CCD sensor still rule and this is one of them.
On the downside I found that the sensor is terribly dirty. I am going to try and use the large Rocket Blower but I have a feeling it really needs a good cleaning.

As much as I loved my K10D, my K3 opened a new world of photography for me. I still have my K10D and sometimes I get it out. My old Takumar's just seem right on the K10D.

Yup ISO 800 was just fine as long as you had enough light. This was shot at ISO 800 with junky old 20-80 Takumar A manual zoom lens. Lincoln Park-55 by Michael, on Flickr

No it is not weird. Outside in bright light I could get away with ISO1000 just fine. Indoors or late at night it was another story. Dark areas just would not clean up. Doing night shots I never went over ISO100, with the K3 I goto 3200 and don't think about it.

Going through some old K10D photos from 2008. This one was at ISO 800, people always complained about the K10D above ISO100. Taken with a junky old Takumar 28-80 manual zoom worth about $20 today. Lincoln Park-7 by Michael, on Flickr

Ray love all the shots, especially the one with the engine. Man they don't build them like that anymore. I really am going to have to charge up the K10D batteries. ---------- Post added 11-01-15 at 07:53 PM ----------
Dave I really like that shit, it certainly sets a mood.

These photos show why this is by no means an outdated camera. I do not think that you could duplicate those colors in the first photo on a CMOS sensor without some fancy post processing.

As was stated already there really is no "best" lens. I had a Sigma 18-50 2.8 mounted on my K10D for years. When shooting landscapes I normally kept it at f8-f10, although f5.6 would be ok most times. At f11 diffraction set in. With the Pentax you may notice slightly richer colors and higher contrast. I have found Sigmas have a bit more subdued colors. When using Sigma on my K10D I boosted the in camera saturation and contrast. For wide angle shots there is a huge difference between 28mm and 18mm. The difference between 50mm and 80mm may not be as noticeable. It really depends on the type of landscapes you want to photograph. I now have a DA*16-50 and would not leave home without it.

Great shot, I have never tried my Sigma 50-500 on my K3. Here is another oldie with my K10D and my first autofocus lens, a Sigma 18-50 2.8.

Thankyou Carol , I actually had to set up my tripod in the street to get that angle. This was also the time I started shooting in Raw and using Lightroom. This one is the same shot after playing with Lightroom civic theatre-1-4 by scorpio71gr, on Flickr

Thank you, Carol and Paul. Those were some of the first shots with K10D. I actually went two years before getting an autofocus lens.
Here is another oldie, the first night shot I ever did with my K10D wit same old "junk" Takumar. I did cheat a little, there was a light post I cloned out in photoshop. civic theatre night-1 by scorpio71gr, on Flickr

Nice shot Carol, I stay clear of bees since I'm allergic. I almost died back in 1979, they had to jump start my heart, so tend to avoid them. :p
I was going through some old K10D photos from back in 2008 and thought I would share some here.
These were all taken with an old Takumar 70-200 manual zoom lens. The same lens I used on my K1000, basically a junk lens by today's standards . Looking through these old photos makes me want to get the K10D and the old Takumars out and some old school shooting.

Yup that is why I still have my K10D. I do not use it much, but I can not get enough for it to justify selling it. Someday soon I will have to get out my old Takumar's and put it to use. Sometimes I wish I had got a different focusing screen. My old eyes do not work as good as they used to.

After the on the position is the depth of field preview, it momentarily stops the aperture down. It may be possible that battery has died and no longer has power to turn the camera on fully. One a rechargeable battery gets old even fully charged it may not have enough power to turn the camera on. I would also try another lens on the camera.

This an old picture taken several years ago with my K10. It was one the first and few HDR images I ever did. This was taken with my 20+ year old 28-80 A Takmumar Lens. Funny thing is i read all the time from people here how terrible the K10D is for manaul focus. i never changed the focus screen either it still has the orginal. |

I have that Tokina 400 in a MF lens that I used on my K10D. It is one of my favorite telephoto lens. I use it with a grip as well. My camera came with the grip, so it has been on there since day one. I have tried to shoot without the grip but the balance seems off. All my film cameras had power winders except my K1000 so I guess it just seems natural to me.

This is one of the very first pictures I took with my K10D back in 2008. I took it with a 25 year old Takumar 28-80 zoom lens. It was manual focus and exposure so I do not know what the settings were. It was taken hand. It took me awhile to get the colors right on my K10D. I switched from my Super Program to the K10D so it was quite the adjustment. I bought a new K3 last year but I still have my K10D. I have been mainly using it for manual focus lens.

Here is a shot I managed to get real quick right after I installed my new 90mm Tamaron 2.8 SP DI Macro on my trusty old K10D. My dog does still too often so I got lucky. Not really any post processing. Pretty much a straight jpeg export from Lightroom. |

You can get the Magic Lantern Guide for the K10D. I bought one when I got my K10D and it helped a lot. You could find a copy on Amazon real cheap.
