He seemed to be hanging around so I decided to try and switch to another lens. The Tamron 70-200 was sitting right there so I grabbed that. I really like this lens. These are uncropped 200mm F4.5.

New year and some new squirrels. This guy was waiting on the back porch when coming back with the dogs. I do not have much in the house but found some unsalted crackers. I put some out, he seemed grateful. It appears he has a run in or too with the neighborhood cats. I noticed there are now two nests in the trees above my house. Time to get some food. These are all jpegs out of the K3 with the 16-85. All are heavily cropped and resized for the forums. The 16-85 was the lens on the K3 when i grabbed it.

Thanks Rupert, not sure about his ear. I do know that the sculpture park does take measures to keep the population under control. However I am not sure if they actually mark their squirrells. I know in the part they have captured and released them in out of the park. This is one more of the same little guy.
Do you mind, I'm trying to enjoy my dinner here.

How dare those darn cats!
Been awhile since I had a chance to photograph the squirrells. They just do not come around my house much anymore. These are from the sculpture park last summer one night when walking back. The park was closing and the sun was going down so I could only grab a few quick shots. Not much light so ISO was 1600.

Growing up we had Standard Poodles. My grandfather, who was from Germany, actually hunted with them. They were bred to be retrievers hence the way they were cut. Fur was left around vital organs and at the ends of joints for insulation. The rest was trimmed away to reduce drag in the water, Our last Standard Poodle was 70lbs about the size of a golden retriever. I have had German Shepherds all my adult life and I have a male now who is 9.5 years old. The thing with German Shepherds is if they do not like someone they is not a whole lot you can do about it. All my shepherds have been rescues. Unfortunately too many people get them not understanding you are going to end up with a 100lb dog with tons of energy and extremely intelligent. A bored German Shepherd is a destructive dog.
All the squirrels here are staying high in the trees an not coming down much. Next year I think I am going to have to put some feeders out

Yeah I do not have any bird feeders here. All we have are sparrows as starlings. I have to get out of the city to see anything else. Even the Robins do not like it here and they are everywhere. I have thought about trying a few feeders but I do not think it really be worth it. My yard, what little I do have, is just too small.

I do not mind feral cats too much. Duke on the other hand has a different opinion. Duke-2016-8.jpg by Michael, on Flickr
There is rescue group here that has a trap, neuter, and release program. They lend you the trap and you bring the cat to them when you catch it. The cat is altered and then released. I started doing this a long time ago and it has drastically reduced the feral population. Unfortunately this year I have been working so much I have not had the time to trap them. So the population is higher than the last few years. I believe most of the cats are abandoned when people move out of the apartments around here. The turnover rate is pretty high. I have even pulled a few out of empty houses after people moved out. I usually try to keep a few feral around me. When they are around I do not have any mice. Some of the cats I trapped were adopted out when we deemed they were unfit to live on their own.

When I bought my K10D, which was my first autofocus camera, I was always upset everytime I forgot to turn SR off when on a tripod. Eventually I discovered that there was never really any difference. The shots that did not turn out had nothing to do with SR being on. It had more to do with me. Eventually I just started leaving it on all the time. I also have never really noticed any difference between my lenses that have OS and using SR. So now I just use SR all the time. I briefly had the Sigma 70-200 with OS but found the 2.2kg difference over the Tamron 70-200 not worth it. So the Sigma went back and now I have the Tamron again.
We have so many feral cats here I almost never see any squirrels. THE squirrels that are around don't stay still very long. This guy used to live in the tree behind my house but now the whole nest is gone.

Having lived in Michigan all my life I mainly see black squirrels along the shoreline. The further inland you go the less you see. I grew up on Lake Michigan so I used to see them all the time. Now I live 45 miles inland and almost never see one.
