Pepi. 16 pounds, muscular and almost two years old.

He had it out with the neighbor's Lab when it came on our back deck and Pepi prevailed.
But it wasn't a fair fight. Pepi was on his home turf and the Lab is a gentle creature that visits with us out on the deck.
We had the owner bring the Lab into our house and let the two of them sniff it out and it worked. They both ended up grooming each other and all is well and the Lab is back to visiting with us on the porch for the summer. From what I have seen of Labs they must make good family pets - calm, gentle and friendly.

I once watched a feral cat stalk and kill a squirrel outside our cabin window.
It acted exactly like the big cats of Africa and Asia - slow careful stalking and then in an instant it was on the squirrel's back, a deep bite to the spine, a shudder from the prey and then dead. It was all over in 30 seconds.

Canines are pack hunters and at a disadvantage as pets - they have no pack to hunt with except their humans.

Pepi.
Picked him up as a stray 1.8 pound kitten and now he's a gigantic16 pounds without a bit of fat on him.
Powerful, muscular and gentle and not nearly as intimidating as he looks here. Due to an emergency we took in the neighbors big Lab for a few days and they got along fine. Slept together and groomed each other and seemed to be pals except that Pepi wanted to play more than the old dog was up to.

When we picked him up that first day as a kitten and as an adult.

Cats, having 6 times the sensitivity to light as we do, seem to often favor out of the way low light spots which makes things difficult for photographers.
It's easy enough in PP to give a low light file an unrealistic amount of bling and pop but the challenge is to preserve that intimate low light feel that cats seem to favor.
Anyway on this shot I tried to preserve that low light feel by getting tonal range (luminosity) at least close to how I remember it.

A very heavy overcast day with the light coming in from the left.

Happy.

After more than 40 years of having cats he remains our most beloved.
Smart, very intelligent, talkative, loyal and affectionate . His humans meant more to him than the other cats except, perhaps, sonny - another bright cat.
We lost him over two years ago and still miss him.

Been messing about with the m4/3 with its surprisingly good 50 buck (new) kit lens and it's 1/3 the size of the Pentax kit.

Pepi.
Got him as a stray kitten deep in the woods early November of last year. Weight at that time was 1.8 pound now about 10 pounds.
Seems to be in perfect health and very alert and playful. Has bonded closely to my wife. When she leaves he waits by the window until She returns.Has a lovely glossy black coat.

Taken with the Panasonic ZS50.

Meet Pepi.

Nov 8, 2015.
Was deep in the woods following a deer path when this little guy started to follow. Every time I looked back there he was about 50 yards back struggling to keep up with his little legs.
I ran to shake him off and thought I had so I rested. Then I heard his weak little squeak and there he was above me on a little cliff trying to get down to me. He slipped trying to get down and came tumbling down the hillside and landed at my feet - totally exhausted and weak. Anyway he looked at me with those big eyes and I was a goner so I slipped him into my cargo pocket and took him home. The rest is history. When I got him to the vet a few days later she said he weighed 1.8 pound and could be no more than eight weeks old.

Loves people but especially our 15 year old male sonny. I think he may have lost his mother too young and Sonny has become his ersatz mother.
In any case he has a home now with a "mother" and two old folks to dote over him and all is well.

After over 40 years of having cats we are down to our last one.

This is Happy who we lost last Summer after 22 years.
We still grieve for him. Intelligent, talkative, full of personality and absolutely loyal to us.
Emotionally very high maintenance - he would not be ignored.
He was not a mere pet but a presence in our life that will always be missed.

Excellent well done.

My ancient Sonny asleep as usual.
Very low light, wrong lens etc but I pulled the trigger anyway.
See the EXIF and you will see what I mean.

Thanks. The moment I first brought it up on the screen I knew this was something beyond the usual cutesy house pet shoot.
Can imagine what he must look like to a little mouse. I made full use of the 250mm zoom to give a sense of that viewpoint. I was actually about 8 feet away.
It's a full frame shot.

Sonny is a semi-feral barn cat.
Sometimes his wild instincts still come into play. This is especially true when I point a camera at him.
I know it has nothing to do with me because when i set aside the camera he immediately relaxes.

Here he is in one of his more wild moments when he feels threatened by the camera....

My beloved Sonny. semi-feral, very nocturnal, and a mouser par excellence.
Very early morning having coffee when he came up from the gloom of the basement after
a night of ridding the world of his arch enemy the dreaded super mouse.
The camera just happened to be right in front of me so I took a quick snap.
Everything was wrong - low light, wrong lens etc but still I like the shot.
It really captures that look he gives me when he expects his staff (me) to feed him..
Sort of a "I did my job now do yours" look.
