It's somewhat complicated.
My shooting style is very specialized. I usually go out for a specific species and know exactly where the ideal habit is for that particular species. Also the sweet zone is from 30-40 feet for the normal sized passerines that I am most interested in. Too close and they spook, too far away and at these magnifications (60x) and you are only magnifying air turbulence. 60 feet is about the absolute limit for ultimate quality no matter what glass you are working with because of turbulence. Suffice to say my shooting style is very controlled and constrained - I don't go about bashing through the wood expecting to taking shots of opportunity.
Anyway at that 30-40 foot range 60x is just too much - narrow field of view, high ISO, tripod shake etc. About 35x would be ideal. So why not exchange unwanted and dysfunctional magnification (diminished IQ, camera shake, narrow FOV etc) for improvement in all these areas?
IQ is only relative and take my word for it that scope will easily out resolve that Q sensor why not take advantage of that?
Case in point, same glass but with the K20. FF and crop. Judge for yourself.

I pretty much agree with his post.
I use a 560mm glass so exchanging unnecessarily high magnification for, what I hope would be a significant improvement in quality is a no-brainier.
After all even under the best of condition that tiny sensor is always struggling let alone when your trying get bird shots in a dark woods understory for instance.
The trick is both enough magnification and enough quality with the same sensor.
It makes sense for my gear but I don't have a clue what he has.

Seeing as we are all just speculating...
... I think as sensor tech improves a 1 inch sensor will more and more become the sweet spot. Good enough quality. good enough low light performance, small enough etc.
More and more both high quality dedicated fast single zooms and ILC cameras with viewfinders in 1 inch format will become the norm. I'm speaking here of a dedicated photography tool - in other words a serious photographic camera for people like myself not some glorified PS.
APS-C will be the format of choice for those who really need extreme quality with reasonable sized glass - the new De facto "FF". So far as the mass market is concerned, 4/3 is a dead end and FF will become a niche market rather like medium format is now. The really small sensors will be limited to devices where photography is not the primary purpose.
You read it here first.

Yes.
As a matter of fact I don't particularly want a Q I want a full featured ILC body with a small sensor.
Size really doesn't matter. After all at these magnifications, 35-60x, it's always going to be mounted on the back end of a large tripod mounted glass anyway.
If it comes right down to it what a need is a K3 body with a 1 inch sensor and a EVF that displays focus peaking. It's technically doable but it will never be made - too small a market.
This is not to say the Q is a dog even for my purposes it's just not optimal.
As a matter of fact it's pretty amazing what you can get out of a sensor that's half the size of a postage stamp...
... a young sparrow right at the cusp of entering adulthood - I think I'm at the limit of what the Q can do with the current sensor with this pic.

Considering the Sony includes an advanced zoom lens and a EVF I don't see why a 1 inch sensor ILC need be any bigger or heaver than a Q....

That why I said "for my purposes". I have never used my two Qs with anything other then my 560mm glass
I used the term "Q" in the generic sense of any compact relatively small sensor ILC.
My needs are for detail, accurate tint and good tone and at the present state of the sensor art a 1 inch might do it.
Taken with the Q-S1 - close but no cigar......

For my purposes a 1 inch sensor.
