UPDATE!

I have created a special RawTherapee build using the Standard tone curve instead of Film-like. I much prefer the Standard curve over the Film-like curve. It's only for Windows 64bit. There are some PP3 files already preloaded into the program. The images that you will get out of this build will be very similar to what you would see using a natural profile on the camera.

You can download the zip file from HERE. Just unzip it & install it. Everything's ready to go. Give it a whirl!

For those that like to build their own version of RawTherapee & are wondering how to change the current default tone curve from Film-like to Standard or something else, there are a couple of files that you'll need to change in the rtengine folder. They are:

improccoordinator.cc
simpleprocess.cc

You can use a simple text editor to look for FILMLIKE & replace it with:

STD (This is for a Standard tone curve)

WEIGHTEDSTD (This is for a Weighted Standard tone curve)

SATANVALBLENDING (This is for a Saturation and Value Blending tone curve)

LUMINANCE (This is for a Luminance tone curve)

PERCEPTUAL (This is for a Perceptual tone curve)

And there you have it. Have fun!

They usually have the latest & greatest code in them. If they don't crash on you, they usually will work pretty great & give you new features as they come out.

The best thing to do is to actually compile your own version. I do it on Windows.

Windows - RawPedia

^ The instructions are there. It seems like it's a lot, but it's not. It becomes a no brainer once you kind of figure it out.

I compile a build once a week. Once I got it all set up, I basically use 7 lines of code to build a new one every time. Then I copy the files from the previous build into the new build, without replacing the new files. I skip the old files that want to overwrite the new files.

Linux - RawPedia

^ These are the instructions for Linux. Haven't done it on Linux yet.

^ Have you tried using the K-50 DCP file from Lightroom? It will reduce the reds a bit more. It will be in the AppData folder that's hidden. The file should be called PENTAX K-50 Adobe Standard.dcp or something like that.

The type of tone curve used in the exposure tab will also affect the. The manual curves that I have use the Standard setting. Try using the Film-like curve.

It's quite easy, Make sure the "processing profile fill mode" button is "released". This way, the only changes that happen are the ones inside the PP3. If it's not released, everything will default to normal again, removing any previous settings or PP3 files. The image below shows you. You want the green one.

Hmmm..... It might be different in Linux then.

C:\Program Files\RawTherapee\5.4-923-g07dafc67a\share\lensfun

^ That's the typical Windows directory where you would find all the .xml files for the Profile Lens Correction section in RawTherapee. You can try creating a folder to see if it works.

Hey folks! Sorry for not getting back sooner. I can no longer edit the first post of this thread. It's too old.

I took down the DCP files a while ago, since RawTherapee can do a pretty good job of figuring out the input profile from whatever RAW file you use. I do have the PP3 files set to Auto-matched camera profile, (cameraICC) in the PP3 file, but it will default to Camera standard if it can't find the correct DCP.

You can make your own DCP files in RawTherapee, although I haven't played with that yet, or you can use the DNG Profile Editor from Adobe for either Windows or Mac. That or you can copy the DCP profiles from Lightoom if you have it.

I'll probably end up having this thread locked & starting a more simplified thread later on to make it easier for the new folks that are just trying this software out. The PP3 files do just about everything for you already. As soon as version 5.5 of RawTherapee comes out, I'll have a new set of PP3 files for it.

I haven't been using RawTherapee on Linux for a while now, but you can try placing them into usr/share/rawtherapee/share/lensfun to see if they show up. You'll need to go into that directory in root mode to copy files into it. It won't let you copy into it as a standard user. You'd have to use gksudo nautilus if using Ubunutu or something like that in the command line to get root access to it. It all depends on your file explorer (nautilus, dolphin, caja, etc.).

RawPedia

^ There's some more info there, but it's kind of confusing. You can also try hitting up heckflosse via PM or try asking the RawTherapee Forum.

The PP3 files are set to match the jpeg tone curve that's embedded in the RAW file. Sometimes it can look a little flat. You'll have to tweak it to your liking at times. It's also using the film-like tone curve by default. It will tone down a few colors by default. If you switch the curve to standard, some colors regain their punchiness. I'm hoping that the developers can eventually change it to whatever curve you want to use. For now it's defaulted to film-like.

It's great that you're making your own PP3 files! RawTherapee seems to have a very massive learning curve, but once you kind of figure it out, it becomes insanely easy to use. It's like really hard at first & then insanely easy. Just takes a bit of time to get used to it. I can use it to batch photos very quickly. You can even search by ISO & other settings. Like find all RAW files withing a certain ISO range to apply the proper PP3 file & then batch them away to wherever you want to batch them to.

This is pretty much the only program that I use to develop RAW files. I compile my own version on Windows once a week to get the newest one available. You can also compile a version on Linux. I do use DxO on occasion, but I'm using it far less now. I also use PDCU on occasion as well, but it's so laggy & buggy that it drives me nuts.

I'm uploading a new batch of experimental PP3 files. Been toying around with some newer settings. I'm just uploading a basic set without a Pixel Shift set. You'd just have to go the the RAW tab & set the demosaicing to Pixel Shift.

You'll need to have the latest version of RawTherapee. See this post on how to get the latest version. Try them out!

^ Not really. Pentax DCU is the only software that can do that.

The closest thing would be creating a dcp file.

The next closest thing would be changing the tone curve type to standard. RawTherapee currently defaults to film-like. No way to automatically set that yet.

^ You're welcome. My main reason for doing this is so that I can shoot worry free up to ISO 12800 with my K-50 bodies. Obviously I try to shoot the lowest ISO possible, but I know that I can still get a usable image at ISO 12800 if I end up shooting that high. Since this is my main RAW developing program, I keep playing with it whenever I have a chance. I also use DxO on occasion, but RawTherapee is pretty much the one that I use almost all the time.

But yeah! The developers have been going non-stop on this project. Their tireless efforts allow us to have this really good RAW developing program for free! :D

UPDATE!

There are some exciting new features coming to RawTherapee. There are some additional threshold sliders in the Sharpening & Microcontrast sections & a new AMaZE+VNG4 demosaicing algorithm with a threshold slider that gives more fine detail & less noise as the ISO climbs.

I've been compiling the latest builds for my machine. It's fairly easy to when you follow these fairly simple instructions. You just copy & paste lines into MSYS2. Remember to ignore the "$" sign. That just tells you that the command line starts there. You end up getting the fastest build for your machine possible. I personally don't add the lensfun database. I don't really use it & RawTherapee runs a lot faster without it. Once you're done adding the files, you can run RawTherapee right from the folder or make your own installation.

If you do end up making an installation file for yourself, you don't really need to do anything else outside of installing Inno Setup. No need to change lines in the WindowsInnoSetup.iss file. You don't even really need to get the gdb.exe file either. It's just for yourself. You just right click on the WindowsInnoSetup.iss file & compile. The installation.exe will be in the build folder.

You can also go HERE to get the latest builds if you don't want to compile RawTherapee yourself. You'll have to click on the links shown to get the latest builds.

I have been playing with some of those new features & have added them into the set of experimental PP3 files that I have attached at the end of this post. I can basically use RL Deconvolution sharpening with all the PP3 files to get some sharpening & not get so much artifacts. It's pretty amazing. I've also added a few more ISO settings for cameras that can shoot up to ISO 819,200. I don't really know why anyone in their right mind would shoot such a high ISO, but at least they are there. You will need to have the latest development build for these PP3 files. They will work on the 5.4 stable release, but you'll notice that the images will look green, since 5.4 doesn't have the AMaZE+VNG4 algorithm. You'll have to change the democaising algorithm, but the images won't look the way they are supposed to look in the new development builds.

I'm not sure if all the features that they are working on will make it to the next release, but I guess we will see once it gets released. I'm gonna keep playing with the newer features in the meanwhile. Well, if you feel brave enough to compile a build for yourself or download a development build to try out, then download these PP3 files & give them a whirl. See what they taste like. Hahaha!

UPDATE!

I have uploaded a new set of PP3 files. There are some noise reduction tweaks. The previous set smeared the fine detail a bit too much for my taste. There is a tiny bit more grain, but more detail is present in the pictures. You can compare this new set to the previous one to see if you like the noise reduction settings.

I've been compiling my own version of RawTherapee lately & it definitely runs a bit faster. I don't add the lensfun database 'cause that seems to slow down RawTherapee quite a bit. There are some new features that I'm experimenting with for the upcoming RawTherapee 5.5. Hopefully I'll include them in the next batch of PP3 files.

Have fun!

UPDATE!

I have uploaded a new set of PP3 files for RawTherapee 5.4. I did a few changes. The PP3 files with the ISO names just provide a basic starting point. Start by using one of those PP3 files. All of them have their respective NR settings. They use the default auto-match film-like tone curve that's inbedded in the jpeg. As a reference point, these allow me to shoot quite confidently to ISO 12800 on my K-50. I'd still be OK to use ISO 25600 in a real pinch. I'm OK with high ISO images, as long as they look decent enough. Some probably won't dare to venture past ISO 800, but at least you know that you can get a decent looking image if you go higher.

There might be times where the embedded tone curve might look a little funny or dull. You can try raising or lowering the exposure & adding some contrast. If that doesn't work, or you prefer a stronger contrast, then apply the "Punchy Tone Curve" PP3 file to get a more contrasty image. It uses a tone curve that I have used for the past couple of years or so. It turns off the auto-match tone curve & defaults to a Standard curve. You can switch Standard to film-like or whatever you want. You might have to change exposure, contrast, and/or lightness settings on your own, depending on the shot.

There are some sharpening PP3 files. The Unsharp Mask ones are subtle, while the Wavelets Sharpening ones are more stronger. The difference between grainy & smooth is the median filter being on or off & the impulse noise reduction being on or off. There might be times where you want to get some finer grain for a high ISO shot that will be converted to black & white or something.

The "Profiled Lens Correction" PP3 file turns on the auto-matched correction parameters in the Transform tab, if any automatic corrections are available. If none are available, you have to manually set them yourself in the Transform tab.

On a side note, make sure the button to the immediate left of where you pick the processing profiles is "released". You'll noticed that the button loses a few lines when it's "released" or turns on all lines if it's "pressed". If the button is "pressed", anytime you change the PP3 file, the image will default to whatever the default is & you lose all your prior settings.

I think I'm at a point where I can't really do much more as far as trying to squeeze the most fine detail that I can squeeze out of the RAW files, but also trying to reduce the noise. I think that PP3 releases will be far fewer from here on. I do keep playing with RawTherapee, so whenever I discover some kind of setting combination or something that allows more detail & better NR, I will post a new batch up. That might be monthly, bimonthly, or maybe even a few months apart.

Well, download these & see how you like them.

P.S. For those of you that use GIMP, they just released version 2.10.0. You might want to completely uninstall the previous version, delete the remaining folders, & start a fresh new installation instead of overwriting your existing one. You might end up getting some errors if you overwrite it. GIMP now allows you to edit 16 bit & 32 bit float image files!

^ Ah! That you will need to set that in the preferences. Download the zip & extract the PP3 file that I have attached to this post to the same location as the ones in the image. Then open up RawTherapee & go the preferences, which is that tiny little icon on the lower left hand side. A new window will appear. Click on the Image Processing tab. Where it reads "Default Processing Profile - For raw photos:", navigate to that PP3 file (Auto-Matched Curve - 0 Edits). It's basically the Neutral processing profile with the auto-tone match enabled. Nothing else is enabled, but this will give you an idea of what the file looks with the default tone curve, but no noise reduction or anything else added to it. Then you select the proper processing profile according to the ISO & go from there.

This is my newest set of PP3 files. There are some NR tweaks & other stuff. They're making good use of the auto-match tone curve. Once again, you need RawTherapee 5.4 to use of them.

You can always browse the attachment thread for older PP3 files. Just click HERE to browse through all the attachments.

Try them out & let me know what you think.
