I almost always shoot handheld with the DFA150-450.

You can always count on the song sparrows to pose.

Loyd,
To help keep the shutter speed under your control rather than having your choices overridden by the camera, I also suggest turning off the Auto EV setting. You indicated in an earlier post that you have it enabled.

If you don't want the bird to be in the center of the frame, you'll need to remember to use the joystick to move where the focus point array to where you want the bird in your composition. FYI - turning on Catch-in Focus in the settings won't have any effect on your shots using autofocus. This feature only works with manual focus lenses or if you turn the autofocus off on the 150-450mm. See page 62 of the user manual for instructions on using Catch-in Focus. Leaving it turned on won't negatively affect the autofocus abilities, however,

Hi Loyd,
Yes, it sure looks like those birds were not captured in focus. I'm a little confused by your settings list. Are you shooting in AF.S or AF.C? I would have used AF.C with Select (S) or Expanded Area AF (S) for the types of shots that you posted rather than AF.C Auto. I like to give the camera some idea approximately where to focus in the scene. With your picture of the bird on the limb, I might have even used AF.C Spot to make sure that the branches didn't distract the autofocus. Given the differences in our settings choices, I guess I can't comment on any changes to autofocus performance in the AF.C Auto mode following the firmware update. Have you checked the AF Fine adjustment after you updated your camera firmware? It does look like a few forum members had to redo their Fine Focus adjustments with the new firmware (Anyone tested the improved AF in firmware v1.41? - Page 2 - PentaxForums.com)
FYI - I was playing around with AF.C Auto yesterday using the 150-450mm for birds-in-flight. It seemed to be tracking and getting in focused shots without issue. Here is a shot with the 150-450mm tracking a northern harrier in front of a distracting background. I believe I was using AF.C with Expanded Area AF (S) for this shot. The cormorant was shot using AF.C Auto against the sky. The cormorant wasn't very close but it was in focus; the image detail doesn't show up at the reduced size for the forum post.

No, I did not need to reset my settings after I updated the firmware. Can you post a sample image of the varied thrush showing the issue? If it looked like the scene was focused correctly through the viewfinder, is it possible that what you are seeing in the resulting images is movement/motion blur?

Hi Loyd,
The latest K3III firmware is the way to go with the 150-450. I've been running the latest firmware since the day it came out and have not had any issues. I don't know if it was the firmware upgrade or the fact that I've been using the DA560 a lot recently but the AF-C on the 150-450 seems to be more responsive with the latest firmware (1.41).
This is a recent shot of a Pacific wren in full forest shade (K3III with firmware 1.41, f5.6, ISO 2000,1/500 sec, @450mm)

A brown creeper shot with the K3III and the DFA 150-450mm with the Pentax DA 1.4X teleconverter attached.

The K3-III autofocus and high ISO abilities really help the DFA 150-450mm shine. I have used it on the K3 and K1-II. The keeper rate with the original K3 was the lowest. It works wonderfully with the K1-II, but the extra reach on APSC reduces the need to crop in post. I was the least happy with the buffer size on the K1-II for my wildlife photography. For me, the K3-III and the 150-450 are a great combination. The 1.4X teleconverter also plays well with this combo. ---------- Post added 11-11-21 at 09:58 AM ----------
I was panning. The bird was moving very quickly and the light was fading. Really only one or two of shots in the series worked out.

I've found the combination to work well, except in strongly backlit situations like with this warbling vireo.

I’m pretty pleased with the IQ of the 150-450 using the 1.4x teleconverter on the K3-III.

Thank you. It is a striking bird. It is a shame that introduced mosquitos carrying avian malaria have reduced their populations to such low numbers.
