Some of my favorite shots have come from days when I didn’t expect to get anything... sometimes it’s just having the camera in the car and pulling off the road to capture a particular moment.

It’s the spontaneity in it all that fuels my love for photography. Especially true for wildlife photography

wow!
5000 ISO on the K-3ii?

I typically force myself to stay under 1600... I might have to re-think that!

Great shots!

Surf envy...
Water temp is 36F here and I gotta squeeze into a 5mm wetsuit to even begin thinking about the paddle out.

Those conditions looks fun!
Especially in boardshorts!

Oh, you'd be amazed how bad my luck is... This was a rarity!
And even still, I had some friends from the birding community laugh because they said just the day before they parked on the south end of the island, walked over the dune and there she was - less than 100 feet from their cars...

I'll still chalk it up as a win in my book though.
I estimated it would take a good 2 hours to find her, so leaving before sunrise played to my advantage.
By the time I shot my first frame, the sun had just broken the horizon 30 minutes prior - the conditions were just right an I was smack in the middle of he golden hour with no one else around.

I stopped shooting for a few minutes and just took it all in.
Utter silence on the beach, just the sound of lapping waves.
A light on-shore breeze and golden sunlight.
Just me and the owl.

To think in a few months that same spot will be riddled with hundreds of umbrellas, flip-flops, coolers, chairs, surfboards, and tourists from afar...

I often say I live in a bipolar town.

Here's one more from that same day:

Thanks!

The most fascinating part was... I was the ONLY one on the beach...
It was surreal - Usually these spots are littered with birders and rangers and photographers.

When I left, I walked around the backside of the dune and ran into someone from NPS who was setting traps to catch this particular bird for tracking and research.

There were 5 birds on the island this day, but this one was the only one without a tracker...
I'd imagine the other 4 birds had crowds of people around.

Two days later the park service caught her and attached the tracking device.

I feel honored to have had a moment in time with her and no one else around; AND to have captured this image before any humans had made physical contact with her (as far as I know).

...Now, she has a solar backpack GPS tracker on her

It's been a while since I've share an image...

Here's one from this winter - my first ever encounter with a snowy owl!
I've lived here for 12 years and have yet to get a decent image of one. It took 6 miles of walking down the beach in single digit temps to find her; walking through the high tide in knee deep water making sure not to spook her off as I approached the dune.
I kept a distance and army crawled inch by inch, making sure not to disturb her.
Shot from about 75 yards away with a K-3ii + 1.4xTC + DA*300. Cropped a good bit too...

I was ecstatic on my walk back to the truck; I should have been smarter about staying dry... I definitely felt like any longer out there would have been creeping towards hypothermia.
Definitely took some time to warm back up before I could drive home.

I would love to see a series of those photos!

"Oh man, that guy just ruined my shot! ... Oh, wait. This is getting interesting! [click click click]"

I've had similar encounters where I live. I frequent Assateague Island National Seashore; there are wild ponies here. Keyword "WILD"...

Tourists get out of their cars, parked in the middle of the road, and walk right up to the ponies to take selfies. There are signs everywhere stating the ponies bite, kick, charge. I don't want to see anyone get hurt, but if you're dumb enough to walk up to a wild animal, within 6 inches of it's face, for a new facebook profile pic... Well, you deserve to get kicked, bitten, and charged at.

This reminds me of an encounter I experienced with "the annoying photographer".
If you haven't met this person, this is usually how it goes:

You setup in your favorite spot, maybe an hour or two before sunrise to make sure you're all ready to shoot by the time that perfect light shines through.
You're waiting for a specific subject, but the lighting is so good by this point that you'll shoot just about anything that is in frame. You've dialed in your exposure, composition; the lighting is just right.
The subject you've been waiting for just happens to land in the vicinity, but it's not quite in the right spot yet. You wait patiently for it to walk/fly/swim/etc into your "perfect lighting spot"...

Meanwhile, another photographer sees you across the way. He/she drives/walks over to you, completely unaware of the situation. They're about 50-75 feet away and yell out, "Hey! Whatcha shooting over there?!"
Your subject startles and takes off in fear...

This photographer quickly tries to snap a few shots, looks back at you and says, "WOW! did you see that! I think I got a few!" ... and then the notorious, "I'm really not good at bird in flight shots!"

:hmm:

Maybe people just annoy me some times? I just think there's a level of respect that should be observed by everyone in nature.
The problem is, anyone can go out and buy a DSLR and think they're now Paul Nicklen or Joel Sartore...

I'm honest with my own abilities. I know I have much to learn, and I've still yet to take a "good" photo after 50,000 frames.
But if I see someone setup in the bush, obviously trying to remain hidden, I'll respect that and shoot elsewhere. If I really want to spark a conversation, I'll wait for them to move and catch them on the trail or back at their car to engage them.

End rant.
Sorry.
Your post just gave me a flashback lol

Cheers for your patience!

I have to agree with the black and white idea.
Or using a mask alter the solid blue background a bit.

The clouds look forced in the doctored version. My eyes are drawn to them over the eagle, yet the eagle is obviously the intended subject.

Great shot by the way, @RockvilleBob

I'd love to hear how the 45in print looks coming from the K-3!
I've still yet to print anything larger than 8x12 from my K-3ii...

Wow, great shot!

Do you use SR with the Eckla window mount?
1/160 at 600mm is impressive regardless...

DA*300, F*300, FA*300

You'd be happy with any of these.

Some even say the F*/FA* are better than the DA*300.
I like the silent AF with WR though so I went with the DA*300.

And as others have said, it pairs beautifully with the HD 1.4xTC!

Wow, that's one helluva day!

I've been so busy lately that all my recent wildlife adventures consist of walking the dog around the park and watching Carolina Wrens bounce around my back yard...
Hopefully in a few weeks I'll have more time to get out and shoot/explore.

I have to say, the ABA website is not exactly easy to navigate... There's a lot going on; difficult to just search location/breed/time stamp.
Unless I'm doing something wrong...

I notice you shot at 410mm.
Just curious if you notice higher IQ shooting slightly below max zoom?

Does 410mm cropped show better results than 450mm with the same FOV?

Now I just gotta rush home after work, let the dogs out, start dinner and sneak out before the sun goes down...

Challenge accepted!

Everyone thinks they are the next Paul Nicklen or Joel Sartore...
Tragedy of the commons, again!
Individuals acting independently based on their own self-interest. Depleting a resource through the collective action of everyone behaving contrary to the common good.

TOTC - It's all too real.

Great idea.
I just attended a birding event last weekend.
Three days in a row, met some great people with great tips and tricks.

One guy could imitate a thrush and attract warblers.
Another guy used owl calls to attract song birds.

They were adamant about ethical usage, ie: not using recordings during breeding/nesting season, duration of the call usage etc.

I'll definitely check with them on owl locations.
Been trying to track down the snowy owl in our area the last few years and always miss it!

Right,
Again I don't live there so I'm not immersed in it.
But last time I was there I overheard on multiple occasions some heated conversations in the breweries.

Some ranchers were very upset.

I was against the subscription based software package for the longest time...
I used Picasa, then it was no longer supported.
I tried Darktable, GIMP and RawTherapee.
I just couldn't get a workflow down.

for $79 I got a deal on a 1-year subscription to photography package.
Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

It's amazing.
You can install on two machines as well, so I have one instance on my laptop and one on a desktop at work for various projects.

I absolutely love the cataloging in Lightroom. I just plug in my SD card and import to a directory folder.
Lightroom automatically creates new folders by date and categorizes my photos accordingly.

Developing in Lightroom is great as well.
I can edit in photoshop and bring it right back to Lightroom without creating unnecessary copies of my images. And add-on support like Nik Collection are great, and free!

I'd give it a shot.
I think you can even get a 30-day free trial. And if you don't like it you can actually still use Lightroom for importing and cataloging, just the development settings will be disabled.

Anyways, that's my 2c
