Oooops! Sorry. I didn't realize I am in the Takumar Club. :D:D:D When you wrote SMC ... I immediately thought of the SMC K series. Nonetheless, my observations still hold true. The SMC K 50mm/1.4 and SMC K 28mm/3.5 are optically identical to their SMC Tak siblings albeit having a K mount.

By the way. the SMC Takumars are the latest in the series. They were preceded by the Takumars and Super Takumars, which both have less advanced multi-coating than the later SMC Taks.

You have in your hands some pretty cool lenses.

I don't have the SMC 135/2.5 but I have the optically-identical SMC Takumar 135/2.5. That is like a surgeon's tool mechanically and optically speaking. Definitely one of my top 3 Taks. The SMC 50/1.4 in my bag, which came with my first ever SLR --- the Pentax KX, is legendary in many ways relative to the lens making technology of the time it was made. I love its contrast and bokeh. I also have the rarer SMC 28mm/3.5, which has close to having a cult following. It is the best of the 28mm Taks, M, and A series that I have. You definitely can't go wrong with your trio.

Took this with one of my favorite M42 lenses: the Super Tak 55mm f/1.8. It never fails to deliver vibrant colours.

This photo of a bee on a cone flower was taken with first version of Takumar 135mm f/2.5 at f/8. The feel of this lens is just inspiring and so is its ability to render pleasing bokeh. (Posted first at Post Your Photos!)

I like contrast between the edge and the central portion of the leaves. I think this would also look nice in monochrome. By the way, I love that Tak, Feels like a surgeon's tool.

This shot does justice to the beauty of these flowers. The colours are just so soft and alluring. You can't go wrong with that Tak,

The swirly bokeh is unusual. I have never seen my Super Taks (2 versions) and SMC Tak 50mm f/1.4 do that.

Thanks for compliment. I find the Taks or Super Taks have a more subdued rendering than their SMC siblings.

Hi Tim60,

There is an attachment. Could it be your browser? I occasionally have this problem depending on the browser that I use. Sometimes I see no picture; one time I kept seeing two pictures.

Anyway, many of the Taks have lovely IQ

Taken with Super Takumar 135mm f/2.5 possibly at f/8. I got this copy with barely any sign of use from a Takumar collector in Victoria, B.C. Even the hard case and metal hood that came with it look like they just came out of the factory. I have fallen in love with the IQ of this half-a-century-old telephoto. The only drawback is the weight of the lens not counting the heft of the thick metal hood and lens cap.

It was a balmy late evening here in Vancouver and I decided to take my K5 with an Auto Takumar 55mm f/2.0 (preset) to the park. Here's one flower resting on the iron armrest of a wooden bench. Taken at f/5.6. Only tweak was an exposure adjustment as the SOOC jpeg file was tad overexposed. Believe me there was an ant inside the flower that was too publicity conscious.

I used the screwmount to K mount adapter between my K5 and the back end of the bellow's assembly. There is a ring that detaches from the bellow's rear end and this ring screws into the K5 fitted with the adapter. It was easier than I initially imagined.

Last week I got a brand new copy (seriously) of an Asahi Pentax Bellows II still wrapped in plastic inside what otherwise is an old looking box. I tried it last night taking a picture of a pink rose bud with an Super Takumar 50mm f/1.4. Here's what I got using f/16.

Earlier this year, I got as a "freebie," together with four other Taks (three different fast fifties and one 28mm f/3.5) for an unbelievable price of CDN$150, a zoom which resembled a bazooka: the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 70-210mm f/4. Upon opening it, it showed very little signs of use. The matching screw-on close focus lens was still in its unopened original plastic bag . Only the hard case showed obvious age.

I was too lazy to take it out for a test drive because of its heft. Then a few weeks ago, I tried it. I must confessed I was amazed by its IQ. There is something "magical" about this zoom compared to its closest modern relative, the SMC Pentax M 80-200mm f/4.5. Here's one I took at f/5.6 handheld at 1/250 sec and ISO 1600 using my K5.

This was taken with my first ever Tak: a Super Takumar 55mm f/1.8. I wasn't sure how shallow the DOF was going to be at f/1.8 and so I must have taken half a dozen or so shots for insurance.

Glad I did because this was the only keeper with that single "peeping crocus" in focus. Focusing was a real challenge with my K10D but it was worth the effort. I am blown away by the OFF rendering of the other bulbs and leaves. The colours have not been tweaked. Definitely no postprocessing involved.

What a lovely introduction to the world of legacy glasses.
