I tried a bunch of birds that I already knew with Merlin. It is very accurate - even with similar egrets and herons.

If it isn't completely sure it gives a couple of choices in ranked order. It asked you to click the one that is your bird. I think this will help the learning process of the program.

I used my computer - not the app for the smart phones. I think it will be very handy when traveling to different parts of the country.

I thought I would try my DA 55-300mm for some close-up work. This is the first time I have done it with this lens. The photo was taken at 260mm; 1/1250th of a sec @ f/5.6 with ISO 400. It was an interesting experiment and I think I will continue to work with it.

We got a couple of hours out on the boat today despite it being a chilly (warmer at my daughter's place in St. Louis than here in Houston), grey day. But it was a pretty good day on the water for birds with an eagle, an osprey, some cormorants, and some white pelicans.

Here's a selected few photos. I know these aren't the greatest, but they are all taken from a rocking boat with the motor running. The photos were taken with a K-5IIs with the Pentax 55-300mm zoom at 300mm. Most photos were taken at 1/1000 sec to minimize movement from the boat and the photographer. The photos were are taken on Lake Conroe, north of Houston, TX.

I know the feeling!

On the other hand, you had ducks. I went down to a local pond the other day and there was nothing. Nil. Nada. And this is in Texas in winter!

BTW - some fine photos. Ducks are just great fun to photograph.

Here's one more from the foggy weekend in Galveston. I saw this guy as my wife and I were walking the beach. I know it is a lot of gray, but this is what it was like. I offer two photos - one a crop; one the full picture. I put the cropped one on my website, but now I am thinking the full shot captures the day better. Thoughts?

BTW, for the old folks out there, we were in Galveston for two performers from the past - Hal Holbrook (at 90!) still doing his one-man Mark Twain. He is still fabulous. And Arlo Guthrie with his 50th anniversary tour with the iconic Alice's Restaurant. Nothing to do with photos, but great fun.

Fantastic!

I would do anything to have seen that sight. We have snowy egrets here in Texas, but no scarlet ibis (just white and white-faced). That is just a magnificent grouping of two absolutely beautiful species. Thank you.

Okay, these are my first pix on the forum. I'm an old dog trying to learn new tricks with my first DSLR. These were taken on Galveston Island during a very foggy weekend. All were taken with the K-5IIs and a Pentax 55-300 mm zoom.

Your comments are welcome - particularly constructive ones. ;)
