You can set the exposure metering time to 3 seconds, 10 seconds, 30 seconds or continuous. The exposure metering is set to continuous, the camera AE and AF never go to standby mode, so that the camera respond faster to pressing the shutter or AF buttons, this mode is less energy efficient. When I shoot wildlife (long lens + grip), I set AE metering to Continuous, that's how I'm able to get in-focus birds taking off. I also happened to use ES (LV mode) when possible, continuous AE remained active as base setting, I noticed that the shutter speed / iso / fstop very moving all over the place.

Seems to be a bug in exposure calculation in LV when AE is set to continuous, diverging AE calculation algorithm, exposure value varies up to 2 stops without any change of incoming light. I guess no one found this bug, because it is unlikely that anyone is using continuous AE and LV.

I think they've use the same 86K single chip sensor which would require to also be cropped in firmware to meter the crop area correctly. Maybe will be fixed in next firmware version. When the scene is lit the same in the center and edges, there's no noticeable errors in exposure. If the subject is dark or too bright in the center, than there is a greater exposure error. I don't mind as I almost never use the crop mode. All it means is that matrix metering should not be used in crop mode, which if neither written in the manual, nor a forced setting by camera firmware.

Crop mode exposure metering bug, when using the viewfinder.
Conditions: Scene = bright area covering the 1.5x crop frame, dark in the outer area between the crop frame and full frame. Exposure mode = matrix. The light intensity being higher in the crop area, exposure should be lower in crop mode vs FF mode (such that average lighting matched 18% gray or so). It's not. For the same scene in liveview mode, the exposure changes properly with crop mode or full frame mode. But when using the optical viewfinder, exposure is the one done for full frame, the crop area taken in crop mode is overexposed. It's probably that the AE metering sensor does not have a crop mode.

Sort of workaround: use center weighted average metering to expose for the crop area of the frame.

Why does it have anything to do with shutter count ?

Same with Canon DSLRs, at least. With AFS focus priority being set, the camera firmware wait for the AF lock to release the shutter mechanism (shutter mechanism and AF servo are tightly synchronized). In AFC mode, autofocus servo and shutter mechanism are asynchronous, this enable the AF servo loop regulation to work continuously so that no time is lost when tracking a moving target. If the AFC is set to FPS instead of focus prio, the two systems are completely independent so the number of frames per second is maximum regardless of the focus status.

AF hold adds a time delay for refocusing in Z direction when the focus is lost. So, it is only a compromise that the user has to select depending on target motion and if the environment is busy or not. For example, when the surrounding of moving targets is clear, AF hold should be off. And when the scene is busy with other unwanted element that the AF points may catch, AF hold should be increased. If the AF hold is set to medium or high and target moving towards the camera or away from the camera, AF tracking will be very poor.

Careful with AF A9 or A33. "A" means that the camera decides what is the subject to focus on. The basic rule (may vary), is that the camera focuses from where the lens AF is set before the focus sequence starts, toward a closer distance, on the element closest to the camera, falling under one of the AF points based on the best contrast. That can be tested, but sometimes it fails to work because the subject that the photographer want to focus on deliver less contrast than another element in the frame falling under one of the AF points. It is more reliable to use a "SEL" setting where the point of first focus is defined in advance and the tracking being taken over by adjacent points. Pre-focusing a bit beyond the subject plane provides the fastest focus time since it correspond to the default direction of the lens AF actuation and shorten the distance between the pre-focused plane and the subject plane. When the lens is roughly pre-focused, either manual or via a lens af preset function, the AF nearly instantaneous (quick manual pre-focus is one of the thing that is easily done with all lenses featuring "quick shift").

Yes, sure. Well, K1 AF is a non issue in good light. The lag that being talked about is in poor light, when every camera may struggle, more of less.

I did again some experimentation with the K1 autofocus in low light. As monochrome mentioned, if I use the back button AF (when in difficult focus situation), the camera has no problem with shooting immediately when pressing the shutter. When you know you are in a low light situation, using the back button AF is indeed a good way around the focus lag.

There is a lag between the effective AF lock (PDAF) and AF lock confirmation in the viewfinder. For example, if you press the shutter fully, the image is taken much faster and the viewfinder AF confirmation does not happen, even if AFS focus priority is set. There is no incidence on AF accuracy. The lag seems to happens between the AF subsystem and the command that blinks AF confirm in the viewfinder, which makes the user think that he has to wait further, loosing time to take the shot. This lag does not exist in CDAF because CDAF is performed directly by the camera OS. Hopefully, a firmware improvement is planned.

Seems like you are trying to put the mode dial in between too positions. I did not have the idea to do this to put the camera at fault. I will try if I can screw up my K1 (if that the goal...).

Normally, the LCD brightness can be changed and the perception of its brightness is relative to ambient light. Therefore, with any camera brand, you never ever adjust exposure according to how it looks on the rear display but you must adjust exposure in order to have a centered histogram (Canon DSLR users do the same, they look at the histogram). Now if you really want do adjust your video exposure from camera LCD brightness, you can still tune the LCD brightness down in order to get satisfaction (yes you can tune rear LCD brightness to your taste). When using a camera, two things to consider: 1) bugs = the camera does not behave according to specifications 2) not using the camera in the correct way.

I do have good AF results with the K1 and Tamron 70-200. Also, I tried to correct for some front focusing on the DFA150-450 and it seemed to have nearly effect. The AF fine tuning on the K3 wasn't very effective, but my first impression is that it's worse on the K1. It seems that the amount that can be tune is really small.

I guess you are talking about TTL flash.

It is the same on my K3. For flash, there is the X sync mode. Also, when using a manual flash, aperture and iso control the exposure because flash light is way faster than 1/200th, it like this for every camera since ages. So I see it more as something that's not convenient for you rather than a bug.

On my K-1, LV manual mode displays a bright image during the focusing sequence and until the focus is reached, so I don't need to use the optical viewfinder, except if I'd use a manual focus lens.

That's what I get but only during AF, then black screen again.

It seems that with or without flash makes no difference in manual mode, if the ambient light is dim (when you need a flash :-)), the LV display may be too dark depending on programmed exposure settings. But if you use the X sync mode (the mode dedicated for flash) , the LV is bright, works great. When using flash, it is common practice to use aperture and iso to balance the ratio between ambient light and flash light exposure because the speed of the flash light is way faster than 1/200, so changing from 1/200 to 1/100 will make little difference , the best being to use the maximum flash sync to avoid the subject in ambient exposure to blur the resulting image (also see flash guide number). When in X sync mode, the shutter speed is fixed to 1/200 (1/200 can be on the K1 to 1/180 or 1/160), iso and aperture can be changed manually, the LCD brightness is constant regardless of the exposure without flash, and at the bottom of the screen is indicated how much the ambient light is underexposed or overexposed.

Bracketing is being reset when changing the burst rate via the top dial. Same issue with ISO control from the top dial not being reset to previous mode after being changed via top dial.

One precision: in fact, changing AF modes / points with AF mode button and looking in the view finder works, what does not work is the displaying of the modes (AFS or AFC, and point selection) that does not display in the bottom of the viewfinder after AE meter was off, so it's just a minor bug.

In normal shooting mode, LCD monitor never switches off. This is undocumented in the manual. K3 automatically switches off the LCD monitor to save power.

It is stated so in the user manual. Makes sense, normally the camera should be Off when changing lenses, and it should still be possible to switch on the light on the lens mount or SD card slots.

Hi Jompen, like for you it works for me when I do the same thing. The goal of this thread isnt to invalidate what others may report. I set af the same way with k1 and k3 (same manual for this part) on k3 it works as described in the manual , on k1 it doesnt.

When I press the Af mode selection button located on the left side of the lens mount , I should be able to select Afc or Afs and Af points by turning the dial wheels. If the Ae meter if Off then the Af mode selection button located onthe left side of the mount does not work. I don't know how to be more clear.

I'd not talking about the back button AF, I'd talking about the "AF mode".

AF modes and points selection in the viewfinder: viewfinder display does not switch on when pressing the AF mode button (the button above the AF M lever), if light metering is Off. However, AF mode is being displayed when depression the Off mode button :-). So, you have to press two times. On the K3, pressing the AF mode button after 3 seconds (light meter goes Off) switches the viewfinder display On again so that we can change the AF mode anytime. Workaround for the K-1: set metering continuous, however, it's not meant to work this way.

I'd also say, honestly, every time I hit the AF mode lock button (the tiny button above the 4 ways controller), I almost hit the top button of the 4 way controller, so, from button layout standpoint, it's a poor implementation compared to K3 and K5, even on K200D the OK button was used which was smarter. If the Ok button could be configure to lock AF mode selection, that would be a nice workaround, otherwise, for a camera of this price I wonder if anyone using various AF modes selections when photographying has been consulted by Ricoh, or if anyone having large fingers has tried the camera regarding how to change AF modes back and forth. I know we have to get used to it everytime they move buttons and menus around, I can live with this... but it's just a pain to use, every-time, I just think, for a camera of this range (kinda pro level camera with 38Mp, pixel shift etc), it's not really acceptable to have a poor button layout of this case.

Please, update firmware so that "Green" button reset of center point AF (like it is used to reset exposure parameters), and "OK" button AF point selection lock.
