The back LCD is a small contributor only. Although, when shooting sports, burst mode, we have the eye stuck to the OVF most of the time and settings fixed in advance, thus possible to save some battery energy by having the back LCD switched off.

That's because power management tends to improve with newer models. And current consumption of a DSLR camera is divided into quiescent current necessary to keep the camera awake and additional current pulse drawn only by the process of light metering, focusing and image capture from the image sensor. That means, if you leave the camera switched-on over night, the battery is discharged in the morning while not having taken any photograph. But if you charge batteries overnight, leave them into trickle charging and put them in the camera just before shooting in the morning, the amount of shots that can be done in burst mode is a lot higher than CIPA figures. With the K1, I was able to shoot indoor sport taking 1800 shots before the first D-LI90 battery was depleted (capacity is around 1800mAh), and then more than 2200 shots with the 6 x eneloop pro (capacity 2500mAh) freshly charged in the grip. Basically, if I use a fully charge set, I can shoot the whole day and still have some power left in the battery grip end of the day.

No 4000 shots with K-1 is real because I have the K1 and happened to used it in the setting I gave here. I also had the K200D and it had some bad habit to detect battery low on NiMH battery even when they still were 30% charged. Also, the K200D carries 4 x AAA batteries, and the K1 grip carries 6 x AAA batteries.

Battery grip with eneloop pro 2500mAh of Pana 2700mAh can easily produce 4000 shots. 4000 shots sold at $400, you'll make a fortune, unless you eventually format the SD to get rid of all those thousand shots that do wow anyone in any way.

Sounds like a legitimate comment. I'm like you most of the time, except when I forgot to plan my shooting in advance I hate waiting for the battery to fully recharge, that's why I keep one battery in my camera and a spare battery fully charged in the camera bag, so that when the battery inside the camera is close to depleted, I replaced it with the fully charged battery. Sounds like it makes sense to me.

They probably had to discontinue the Pentax K3 II to leave enough production capacity to the Pentax K2, since the Pentax K1 is still in production, and both K1 and K2 are very popular models.

No, the main reason for you to get a mirrorless camera is that your need was created by marketing folks. Before knowing that mirrorless exists, you were content with what you had. It's not real, being content is a state of mind that has no substance, it all happened in your mind. That's how marketing make a living off their jobs: making customers constructively discontent of their old product in order to create the motive to buy something new even if the older product just works fine.

I don't see it this way. Ricoh Imaging is unlikely to sell the Pentax camera business because it is very small now. So, the second option for them is the continue to do what they have always done before Ricoh, managing by the costs and cash flows, that is to spend no more than the revenue allows, this way they never have negative EBIT but the downside of doing that is losing market share. My guess of what Ricoh Imaging are doing now is they have one team and they alternate working on a format or the other. That means, if they work on a medium format update, there will be no new camera for both full frame and apsc for three more years, and when they will be working again on apsc or full frame there will be again lots of delay. If they keep 3 formats, that will be an average 6 years life cycle for each model.

It's already covered and gone flat again. PR workflows with web agencies are faster than every, they receive the new cameras a few days before the release date, everything is already prepared and agreed with each camera brand, they pack the reviews in a few days , make a lot of waves (on the internet sites like DPR, imaging-resource, and a few others) and after a week or two, it's back flat down to normal life. New cameras are like taking drugs for the media folks, in order to get excited they need higher and higher doses of waves for a shorter time. Then no one cares about if Nikon and Canon and Sony have spend 18 months R&D on a new product.

It's cool that Canon makes the f4 lenses, thanks to them you have decided not to upgrade to a Pentax K1 system and in the meantime you still use your old equipment which have you spend no money. You could get the Canon f4 setup, but not, better use old apsc gear, it's free of charge until it breaks.

That's an old method. The new trend that's picking-up recently (coming from Apple and Amazon management practices), is to set goals that are 2x or 3x higher than what's possible to achieve, every one miss his goal , just to put employees in inferior position at the next yearly staff appraisal (no increase of paie, despite very hard work done). That method is said to max out team performance because what's being achieved at impossible goal, is superior to what would have been achieved if the goal was achievable. The down side is more burnouts, some employees just quit as they can't stand the pressure, they get replaced. That method is slowing progressing at blue chip companies.

Because new gear is cool and youtube said so. People like to buy new gear. That's why there are tons of very capable cameras with low shutter count for sale used, tons of crap photographs taken with expensive cameras and tons of excellent photographs taken with 10 years old cameras. Camera are for the hobby market, there is no need to have everything rationally designed in the camera, could even be some non-sense from a photography practice point of view. A lot of photographer studios that were doing fine until digital have closed when digital camera came. And even the "pro photographers" say that their income comes from doing workshops and advertising and income from selling photographs is very small and far from marking enough money for living. Camera marketing is all about making a lot of buzzz around anything that can be pointed as being different, period. Just take pixel shift, how practical is that...?? Take the 20 frames per second of Sony A9, how ridiculous is that...? (how many wasted files must be deleted..?).

IMO what people fail to realize is that camera companies segment their market depending on customer profiles. From the specification of the Nikon Z7, it is clear that this model is not aimed for the same type of use as their DSLR lines.

Why Nikon mirrorless line be developed with lower margins than their DSLR line?
Answer: Because they would generate additional revenue from mirrorless products that would contribute to pay for fixed cost of running their company.

Companies define their product mix, with products that differ in terms of production quantities, price, margin, and even promotional budgets and retail channels. Sometimes, the exact same product is sold at a different price under a different brand via different distribution channel.. Some products may bring 10% and other products 1000%, that's the right product mix that makes the company more successful. Single product with single customer eventually allows to be the stronger competitor but is a lot riskier than multi-product multi-customer approach. Single product multi-customer is less risky but it is more difficult to please every customer, although that could be a valid approach for low cost products. Multi-product for multi-customer is most costly in terms of R&D but it is the most agile since products of the product mix can be adapted to groups of customers having similar needs (= market segmentation).

From your profile, owning a K-7, *ist DS, and K-01, you don't have to worry that much about the residual value of your camera assets. If you didn't buy any Pentax product at your local store since the *ist-DS, it makes sense that your local store did not continue to sell Pentax. If you want Pentax product to be sold at your local store, it is up to you to got to them and ask for Pentax gear. It's like "chicken and eggs". Go there and order a K1 II with a DFA15-30, DFA24-70, DFA70-200 and DFA150-450, they will be happy to serve you.

That's because you believe that the camera market is not segmented, but somehow it is segmented (ref. to market segmentation). Anyway, customers shouldn't substitute themselves to business execs, the role of a customer (for cameras) is to buy cameras and take photographs.

When I compare images ( from imaging-resource) of a D500 (dual gain CMOS sensor) and Canon 5DIII, the D500 image quality is as good or better than the Canon, but the D500 is a lot faster..
I can only conclude that the latest general of apsc sensors is about as good as full frame, but those apsc cameras are a lot faster.

My K1 choke after about 9 to 11 shots at 4 frames per seconds then have to wait for 20 seconds for the buffer to unload, using a Sandisk 95Mb/s. Not saying I want the fastest camera such as A9 or Z7, but practically I feel the bar of the K1 is quickly reached and I must be really careful not to hit the buffer otherwise the camera is unusable for 20 seconds of more. For landscape it's not a concern, but for wildlife or event that's a very serious bottleneck.

Do you mean I should buy again the K3 that I sold to pay for the K1 ?

This thread shows that there would somehow be a strong demand for a new fast K3II successor. Slow K1 has created the need for a quick camera with better AF.

Because otherwise there would be no point in buying a K3 successor if the features/performance would not consist of an upgrade.

K1 and KP are based on K3 plateform. KP has K3 AF module, K1 has K3 data processing pipeline that's why the buffer for 36Mp is limited and the data transfer rate to SD cards make it very slow to empty the buffer.

---------- Post added 21-08-18 at 11:17 ----------

The way I see the next gen Pentax cameras, based on history: there will be a new apsc flagship with significantly better AF and frame rate, and then there will be a new Pentax full frame body using AF tech and data pipeline of the aspc flagship but with a sensor taken from the D850 or Sony A7Riii. Unless Pentax gets eaten by mirrorless depending on how the k mount customer base will evolve.

The 36Mp and slow frame rate of the K1 was intentional to create the need for a new apsc fragship. But Ricoh Imaging have assigned a lot of resources to Theta (just as an example, Theta wireless image sync work very well, while it is really a pain on K1). For the K1, they've reused the K3 platform and they've even delayed the introduction of the K1, that is to say how little resources they have for DSLRs. For the next apsc flagship may take a while if they decide to redo the AF system to be comparable to a D500, there is a lot of engineering involved: faster system servo, faster burst rate, bigger buffer, faster image processing engine, new memoery card tech, new interface to memory cards, plus they may make it mirrorless to make it easier to reach higher frame rate: my guess is that the camera electronics / software team for Pentax cameras you can count them on your fingers, that means they need more than 30 months total to engineer a new model and qualify it ready to market. So, maybe 2019...maybe teasing in 2019 and release in 2020.

That's why Huawei have been caught two times using DSLR photographs for showing examples of images taken with their phones, for advertising how good is image quality of their phones... Then you get people looking at Huawei Ads "wow, that photo taken with a Huawei phone is fantastic", and once they own the mobile phone there is no "Wow" effect anymore. Phones deliver image quality similar to former compact camera with the smallest sensors, and that's no even close to what the cheapest second hand entry level DSLR can do. There's no secret, the sensor tech used in phones is the same as the sensor tech used in cameras, except the sensors fitted in DSLR and now full frame mirrorless now are a lot larger (the same mobile sensor thing tiled into an array).

Ricoh shown to have half baked ideas for Pentax cameras. Except size of the grip (too small) , I preferred the layout of the K3 to the K1. I tried a Canon 5DIV but on the Canon the vertical wheel is really badly placed, that is not the case of Pentax or Nikon that have the front wheel under the shutter button.

Yes, they know that they are doing a 50mm prime when people have asked for 20mm and 85mm primes because there are non available.
Result is, the poll about who will buy the DFA*50mm says that 80% of Pentaxians will no buy it.
