Looking at the big picture... we have one customer "leaving" posting on the forum for everyone to know. One customer "leaving" is not a statistic, one making an alternate choice out of hundreds of thousands Pentax customers who are more than happy with what Pentax has to offer. Also, we shall not forget than high performance autofocus isn't a must for every style of photography; there are other [medium format] camera system that have dismal autofocus capability compared to Pentax K1/II and yet customer buy into those MF systems because they want more image quality at the expense of autofocus. Even the most professional of commercial and art works are done with subpar AF compared to Pentax. Relax, go out shooting and enjoy your camera.

One selected a Sony A9 for taking portraits, the other one was given a Sony A7III 24Mp camera to shoot models (the choice was done by someone else), and the third one do not select a Sony A9, but a D850 F mount for sports while the new Nikon mount is the Z mount. I remember of another Pentaxian (years ago) who got himself a Nikon D4 for shooting portraits in studio, because the K5 wasn't good enough, I thought "what a weird choice"!.. who knows. At the end of the day, they all take photos.

The point is not really that it is possible to focus manually on moving subjects. What's at stake is that most hurried photographs don't make it to Fotocult magazine, but they do eventually clog flickr databases. People confuse recording and creativity. There are military servos systems that can track distances between two object flying over the speed of sound, those system are way way better than any camera AF servo , the problem is those military servo systems are completely useless in the photography world. Simple: it's only a belief that AF is the cause of bad photographs, faster AF is more likely to produce garbage because there is no thought put into the photograph, the result is uncontrolled and random, sometime out of a hundred shot you get a shot framed correctly, that's luck not photography. There a two schools in photography: 1) the gear addition school, and 2) photographic design. Gear leads to nowhere, photographic design gets us to the next level. That's real.

So now that the truth has been laid out. Of course we need to take care of customers in the right way, respect their choices and let them believe that autofocus is the key to success: as Hernest Dichter said "Sales are achieve by making customers constructively discontent", that works every time for the goal of selling new cameras models, just design a new camera with more AF points, show AF tracking of running dog, and every customer who own an older camera that has less AF points will feel they need to buy the new model. Will the new model change their photographs , I doubt. Now, let not kill the future sales of Pentax when they will release a new model with better AF, it is for business important to keep people believe that their AF suck so that the next sales is already half done. To me it looks like the only way to keep customers loyal and at the same time keep them discontent so that to prepare the sale of the next better model, is to be the market leader: Canon.

Nope, the 15-30 is better than the 24-70, I have both.

Nope, the new EOS R and Z are larger than the Sonys for a reason: ergonomics. The K1 is the size of the EOS R.

I constantly look at what other brands offer, so there are thing that are true and can be verified, but other claims are simply not true (I have personal issue with erroneous assessments). Camera buyers , do buy most of the time with only a tiny portion of real information that reach their mind. The EOS R and 28-70 f2 is enormous, larger than a Pentax K1 and 24-70.

If we look for a reason to not buy anything Pentax, we can always find a reason (that's applies to anything in life: what to get rid of your dog... just pretend the dig is crazy). Then do this (not buy anything) for as long as necessary and the switching to another system brand will not be a choice anymore, it will be imposed on you.

Are you sure you wanted to buy into an F mount system? At the moment, it looks like Nikon are going to leave the F mount behind and invest in the Z mount. The future is the Z mount. Nikon are going to improve autofocus on the Z system, in less than two years your D850 kit will lack perceived performance, so I can imaging you'll have to buy a complete Z system again. The Z system is able to focus over the entire frame area, while the D850 can only focus near the center on the frame.

Yes, that's a good point to mention. I had the same situation when photographing a group of people, some people were out of focus. I figured out the problem wasn't Pentax AF, the problem was insufficient depth of field because in a group of people not everyone is in a same plane. The solution is to stop down the lens.

The selection of fast new primes 35mm and 85mm is what's currently missing for the K1/II. Although I'm afraid that the D850 won't be able to have everyone in the group of people in focus at f1.8. When I shoot portraits of one person I stop down the lens to f4 or f5.6. For a group of people, I'd use 35mm f4 or 85 f5.6/f8, so in that case the fast primes have nearly not advantage over the DFA24-70 or DFA70-200 zooms.

Slowing down shutter speed to record an image of motion has nothing to do with the resolution 4K monitors., it's a photographic technique that is available for photographers. This idea of Morihei Ueshiba and other martial art artists is that the mind is you best weapon, not the camera gear. People who don't understand that martial art concept will never level very high. Photography has something in common with martial arts, photography is the art of seeing, not a competition of camera specs, we don't become black belt at a martial art by using a machine gun, in the same way, we don't become a better photographer by buying a D850. Pentax forces you to progress on the path on photographic master, Nikon give you the opportunity not you work on the path to personal mastery of the mind. People leaving Pentax when they can't resist the temptation of Nikon, have let Nikon control their mind.

That's true for apsc, but that's not the case of the OP. He is replacing a new system that actually works fine is used properly, by another new system that works fine when used properly. Every car has a maximum load allowed, you can always say that you can load the other brand of cars 10% more, but that's an excuse you use to support a desire. Psychology of the sales is known for very long time, in sales we know that desire govern the purchase decision as long as they is enough facts that can be collected to support the original desire. In other words, claiming AF is the reason to switch brand is BS, anyone could also say "I need 50Mega pixel instead of 36, so I switch to Canon", it would also be BS. Anyone being a Canon customer can also claim that he must switch to Nikon because he "needs" the 100mm f1.4, that BS again. Our civilization is far evolved from stone age, everything we buy we don't actually need it, we desire it. Claiming rational stuff for switching brand is BS.

There's a lot of truth in this, but it's relative. Due to market shrinkage, the brands that had deep pockets have released unprecedented number of new products in order to keep sales up. So what happens is that we see more and more camera gear with a few 1000 actuations for sales used for cheap. I'm not saying Ricoh are fast to release lenses for Pentax, they are slow. But other brands are new pulling out new camera models and new lenses that makes the 3 years old models look obsolete, which the practical benefits of the new products are marginal at most. It's already tempting to get the next best system, but it's very costly, there will always be something that the current model doesn't have or doesn't do.

Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba was photographed and filmed in 1957 with film equipment without autofocus. Usually, for this kind of shots, the skilled photographer doesn't try to track the rapid subject motion, the skilled photographer will set his camera shutter speed to 1/50th sec. in order to obtain a blur of the moving part that convey the sense of fast motion into a photographs. See example below: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aikido#/media/File:Shihonage.jpg

Pentax business is like "chicken & eggs". The brand Pentax has been bad mouth for as long as twenty years, most of the time, people using C&N brands liked to bash Pentax because it was cool. The other thing is Pentax has been playing lens mount compatibility for very long, lens mount backward compatibility is a double edge sword, customer buy only new camera model and keep using their old lenses, so it's nice thing for existing customers but somehow impact how much money Pentax could make. In the meantime C & N have changed their mounts in such as way that customers had to spend $$$ on new lenses. So, what happened is that the Pentax customers who were having a too small budget stayed with Pentax, and the Pentax customer with bigger budget moved to C & N. Lastly, the sales of Pentax K1 to customers using their old glass also prevent Ricoh to break even on newly designed lenses. A lot of customers purchased a K1 only , and eventually the DFA28-105 and nothing else, using old M, F and FA glass. If C & N would have designed the K1, they would have remove the screw drive so that customers must buy new lenses if they want to use their full frame camera. Evidence of Pentax difficulty to break even on lenses is the rebadge of 2 tamron lenses and Tokina partnership for the DFA*50. Other brands do deliver on gear overall performance, but they do make their customers pay big $$$. Most recently is the change of lens mounts for all mirrorless model, clearly a business case of how to milk customers' cash.

So , by leaving Pentax, you make sure, like the ones who left before you, that the ones who stay will get less and less.

The model expression in front of the camera make a lot more difference that the brand of camera. There are awesome models photographs taken with compact cameras , crappy AF and a flash.
