. Sure. In nature, every choice compete with each other. So we have two choices, independant from camera format. If I use a K3 instead of K1 , I save 13mm in my camera bag. If I use a pancake lens instead of a zoom, I save 80mm. So, I prefer to use a pancake lens because saving 13mm on the camera isn't going to save me much in the camera bag, but the 80mm saving actually permit a smaller bag becuase the 80mm saving is done on an axis perpendicular to camera. I see a lot of people who bought a Sony A7 because they wanted something small, but then they use a 24-105 G master, which render their buying argument totally irrelevant because the Sony 24-105 G is larger than the larger Pentax zoom. To compare sizes it's easy: I put a 40mm on the K1 and try to put it in the bag, I mount the same 40mm on a Kp and put it in the bag. Then I mount a 17-70 on a KP and try to put it in the bag, it doesn't fit. So for me, camera sensor format has minor impact on size, but the choice of lens is the key to portability regardless of the sensor size.

As a matter of fact, people don't use camera bodies only, they use camera with a lens mounted on the camera. That is why there is no advantage , except fitting wrong logic, to have a small camera body with a big lens on it: the lens will increase the size of camera bag needed and the too small grip will create the less good handling of the camera. All camera bodies are more or less having the form factor of a brick (like a cube but rectangular), the lens disrupt that efficient form factor leading to require a larger camera bag. For example, an apsc camera with a 16-85 zoom lens occupy more volume than a full frame camera with a compact prime on it, and the full frame camera with the prime is more comfortable to handle. A lot of people purchased some Sony camera bodies based on the small size of the bodies, ended up needing a big bag to fit the big lens. Typically, a Sony A7III or A9 with a 24-105G anyhow require a bigger camera bag than a full frame DSLR with 50mm prime, the DSLR being clearly better to handle.

That's not possible to keep the apsc size due to the mirror box being larger for full frame. But I assume fitting an aspc sensor into a full frame body is easier.

There is always the possibility to release two identical camera bodies , one body with a full frame sensor and the other one with an apsc sensor in it with faster frame rate and cheaper price, because the lens mount is the same anyway, same battery grip would be nice. Just looking at what Olympus have done out of a micro 4/3 sensor: a camera as large as a 1D.

Well, a fast 35mm 700gr is seldom needed (not really a portrait lens, not really an astro lens), a tiny 35 f2 is ideal for vacation travel, and the DA35 macro doesn't cover the full frame image circle. Some revamp needed here (thinking for myself, actually). :) I see the 35 f2 as a all around compact lens used for shooting about anything from street to landscapes, all that from f5.6 down to f16. I don't see many use of 35 at f1.4, as the 85mm or even 50mm are better bokeh machines.

I've had the DA40, and I thought about the 40XS for the K1, but it's an overkill because the XS40 lens will be behind the front plane of the OVF hood on the K1. The FA35 is a bit wider F.o.V and still make the K1 as slim as a Z7 or S1R. I've mounted my 50 1.7 on the K1 with battery grip, it's a monster kit when using LV with focus peaking (in a good way). Actually I thought about getting a M28 f2.8 or f3.5 for the same usage. But the HD FA35 2 has AF.. so if the price is right I may get one (LBA inviting herself, humm dangerous , I said no to LBA but she is always coming back at the wrong time  ).

Thanks for the insight. My interest of the FA 35 (or DA40) is the size, because [long story short], I can fit the K1 with battery grip vertically in the bag and this is something that is not possible with any of the zooms. The only prime I currently have is the SMC M50 1.7, it fits in the bag, nice for traveling. I wouldn't be interesting in the sigma, because it would be almost as large a one of my zooms.

Anyone has the HD FA35 2 to show image quality compared to the original FA35 2 ? Are there some test charts that show how the FA 35 2 performs center / edges at each aperture?
The DA 35 2.4 is a lot cheaper, people have say it uses the same optical formula as the FA 35 2, but I've had the DA35 2.4 (sold with the K3 as kit), and wasn't very impressed by the DA35 2.4. So the question for me is how well the HD FA35 2 will perform on a K1 II.

Most probably yes. Looking through the lens, I see the future of Pentax with an new apsc camera with superior autofocus performance to pair with the DFA 150-450, simply because 450mm is too short for wildlife on full frame. Also, there isn't a whole lot of new lenses to redo for apsc. One can use a 3 lens setup for apsc: the 11-18, the 28-105 (small) and the 150-450 on apsc body, the next 70-200 f4 would also be usable on apsc. If things unfold the way I describe, it'll be all good for us customers.

Sure, an apsc line with star zooms and small primes is the dream renewed. It was already that way in the past (DA* 16-50 etc.), except the glass was excellent but the af motor reliability crippled it. I definitely look forward to Star glass, because for me, star* glass of Pentax is what differentiate Pentax from others.

Aren't they holding off the release date even when the new products are fully tested and first batch of production in stock, because they want to hold off revenue increase?
Or do they release new products when they are ready to go?

it doesn't matter. People buy stuff when it's advertised, play around with it for a while and resell it for almost the same price if still in mint conditions.

The live world is made of flux and cycles, things per unit of time. Over ten years, the accumulated purchases of cigarettes can represent a lot of money. So, I would say, spending 10K in a camera system is not even expensive if the user keep using it for 10 years. These things get obsolete over time especially the cheaper camera products become obsolete faster, but much less so with larger sensors when we aren't excited by gadgets features. But the problem is, buying new toys is pleasurable, the pleasure of unboxing and playing with new features etc. So, in some ways, people prefer to buy cameras more often and less expensive as opposed to buying an expensive camera and then not buy any photography product for 10 years. For me, buying a 10K medium format for 10 years is the same as buying a new budget camera for every Christmas. BTW, in EU, interest rate is so low, that the cost of capital is negligible. But if you buy a medium format system, you have to be mentally strong or not look at camera review sites.

The HD FA35 is quite affordable, released in the beginning of the year, so that anyone can have it offered as a present for his/her birthday anniversary. With the HD FA35 will come the pleasure of unboxing, trying it out compare it to the orginal FA35 2, bring it with you at your next holiday trip (the lens is small/compact, ideal for the next spring/summer vacation), play with it during holiday, even if you don't need that lens because you already have a half dozen that already cover 35mm.

Double guessing: the HD FA35 2 would be the ideal lens product for the birthday present, and the DA*11-18 will perform well as a Christmas present.

I don't think the volume/price function would follow such a wide range. There's likely a certain number of ILC owners/customer with price expectations for a short time window, so the sales would increase or decrease +-25% at most, volumes wouldn't double or triple if the price is lower than the average price people are willing to pay, simply because the price isn't the only factor for decision, there is also expectation of IQ, and willingness to carry the bulk of the camera/lens system. For example, even if there would be a 645z and lens for 3K, a few more people will buy and the rest will not like to carry that much gear around.

They can always drop the price a bit when initial sales quantities will slow down, as they usually have time to improve production efficiency and reduces costs along the way. That said, the K1 II is price attractively (K1 is every cheaper), now I really like dynamic pixel shift on the K1 II.

Where did I say anything negative about LEica? (except price and beside being sarcastic). Leica glass is excellent but I'm afraid their prices aren't for everyone.

That is under the assumption of the economies of scale achieved for cameras is the same as economies of scale achieved for consumer electronics. Except that now the volumes achieved in the high-end camera market (FF), are a lot less than production volumes achieved with other consumer electronic devices. Unit cost becomes secondary (see E-MX1 now priced $3000). The cost impact of R&D is a lot more now than it used to be (camera design, firmware and testing), the race of specifications for new cameras will push prices up. Any price drop (regardless of material amount use to build the camera) will lead to lower revenue (shrinking own market) for the camera makers, so, they wont do it. It is known that camera volumes wouldn't increase faster than price drop (price elasticity) due to the evidence provided by the fall of cheap compact cameras.

Yes, Pentax K1 is also getting cheap (<1.4K) , because it is end of life from production standpoint, same for previous gen of Sony A7x, Canon (5DIII for 1K), Nikon (D610 for under 1K).

That will come later. The HD FA35 2 is a re-release of the same lens because customers are impatient having been used to frequent new products when the ILC market was booming. Now, the market isn't growing anymore, it's shrinking, camera makers are cautious, especially Pentax, the rate of new product releases is adapted to market conditions but customers need to lower their expectation about how frequently new products are coming. To avoid disappointment, customers have to tune their expectations to match a new era of digital photography: less frequent products releases, higher quality and much higher prices.

Well, for the lack of any good camera system, MJKoski had no other choice than select the least worse brand of camera and lenses. I feel the same. Even Leica (from south Germany, OMG!) are not perfect (especially for the north Germans :-)), there is always something that's not perfectly ideal. Ideally, each pixel should be square, but they are not, they are rounded, it's really a problem when looking at images. With Leica, you dig deep and there is something wrong, inevitably wrong. How come all those camera makers fail to get it right every time. It's unbelievable.

The 11-18 is for apsc users, the 15-30 is for full frame users, it's no a matter of weight , it's a matter of choice of format to begin with.

Sure. Not all Pentaxians acquired a Pentax K1, a number of Pentax users like apsc (K3 , Kp), the 11-18 is for them, as simple as that.

The message is clear: the FA35 2 served K mount users for two decades, the lens was very low cost if you used it for 20 years. Guess, the 11-18 is a star lens , can be expected to live for the next 20 years. Cameras bodies last much less time. I mean , even very expensive lenses are cheap.

I've never seen logical explanations either here or dpr. A lot of the comments reflect personal conviction rather than general logical photography concepts. A lot of the things I've realized myself slowly over the years and at the time of my "Ah ah" moments, I was really astonished myself that none of the teaching made it to a forum.

The problem when it takes a long time from design start to release of a new lens, is people may not understand what the new lens is aimed at when it's released, unless the manufacturer explain the logic. I've never seen Pentax explain anything about how they built a system, they let customers figure it out (if logic there is), some customers get it wrong and end-up not happy re-selling what they have. For example, I don't see the point of a 11-18 for use with a K3II successor sport oriented camera (high fps, better autofocus): 11-18 is generally used as landscape and architecture, isn't logical to pair it with a sport camera. So, I can only support that the 11-18 is designed to be used on a KP, but them the price of the lens is off scale for customer who got a KP because they didn't want to spend the money for full frame. As customers , we need explanations from Ricoh, I suppose.

I'm asking myself: when the system is complete (lenses from 15mm to 560mm), why customers are disappointed by lack of new products? Do customers enjoy spending money more than using what they have?
As far as I am concerned, I don't mind much about what's released or not, currently I have zero excuse for not taking amazing photographs, if I don't come up with a good image, I can only blame myself.

The 11-18 shines... images are impeccable, amazing net colors. Having moved to FF K1/II, very unlikely to buy that lens unfortunately. Aerobright is excellent.
The new FA35 2, tiny, tempting. Have too many k mount glass already, the 28-105 and 24-70 will do, I'll pass on the new old 35 f2 and still be waiting for 20mm f4 (Star?) and fast 85mm (Star?).

I remember very well when Pentax (under Hoya) released the DA limited series (DA15, DA21, DA35 macro, DA40, DA70) , it really nice small high quality built high contrast tiny primes. At that time, Pentax was the only brand offering such classy tiny limited primes for apsc. When I see the kind of primes Ricoh are now pushing for the K1, it's kinda pushing me back to the apsc line (KP + the DA limited), except if I would do it wouldn't be a KP, it would be Fuji. At the moment I don't understand the Pentax way anymore.
