Just looking at how good is the D-FA 70-210 (even sharper and faster to focus than the DFA*70-200 Pentax), the D-FA*85 could cancelled and replaced by a Tamron SP 85 f1.8 with Pentax HD coatings, I'd be fine with that.

Sure. It depends on what the philosophy behind making primes lenses over zooms. For me, primes lenses are primarily bokeh machines, while I'd favor "slow" zooms sharp corner to corner when stopped down (for landscape and street-scape kind of shots). The reason I think so is because when I don't like to swap lenses outdoors when hiking, while I'll have no problem to swap lenses when in a "studio" type setting for shooting people. Also, corner sharpness on a fast prime may not be used that often, due to edges often being out of focus anyway, except for a fast wide angle prime, e.g for astro.

Only one prime that beats MTF charts of every single Nikon S primes recently released. Might take a while to release a D-FA*85 if Ricoh plan the same level of optical quality as the D-FA*50.

Yes. It's like for cars, thirty years ago the focus was to make cars that don't leak oil or stop working, and nowadays oil leakage and durability is a given, and the focus is now on electronics (engine efficiency, sensing around the car, and electronic assistance to passenger security).

20 f1.8 is not necessarily large. The diameter of long lenses is proportional to the f number, but that's not the case for wide angle lenses. 600mm/4 (f/4) = 6 inches; 20mm/1.4 (f/1.4) = 0.6 inches.
What defines the size of a wide angle lens is how sharp it must be at the edges. Typically the Pentax HD 15 ltd is small and not sharp (has lots of field curvature AND aberation in corners).

A D-FA 20mm would have been a big seller, I believe. There is lot of Pentax users who want a wide angle lense but weren't accepting the price and size of the D-FA 15-30.

Lets do the maths using x 1.5 crop factor: 56mm x 1.5 = 85mm, which means 56mm on full frame is equivalent to 85mm on apsc   :D

Looks like Ricoh decided to go top class with those primes and don't care much about the time to achieve that goal. Quality priority #1, release date priority #2. It's bold.

Anyway, for the D-FA85, the date of Christmas for Pentaxians is the same as for everyone else, it's December 25th and not in July or August. You got to write your letter to Santa and be nice with you wife/husband, and maybe your D-FA85 will be at the bottom of the Christmas tree.

Mostly D800/D800E/D810 users here.

---------- Post added 10-07-19 at 16:18 ----------

The D-FA 85 is going to be for FA77 owners who want more IQ out of their portraits lenses, or guys like me who want to stop scaring off models with they D-FA* 70-200 monster.

Sounds like Nikon marketing talk ("Sorry the demand for our $3850 camera model was so high that we had to postpone all deliveries by three months").

---------- Post added 10-07-19 at 16:13 ----------

Maybe Ricoh ran out of glass elements on the assembly line, so they had to drink a few more sake bottles, give the empty bottles back to Hoya to melt them into more glass elements for the D-FA*85.

Looks like the same lens case as was shown last year or earlier this year.

Will the 85mm lens made of a stretch and lift of DFA*50 lens elements (that's how Sigma turn their 150-400mm lens into a 150-600mm, the last 200mm are usually not that sharp). After all , focal length is related to the distance between the diaphragm and the sensor.

Me too. Wood is a special material, hard enough to built solid things, yet soft enough that it can be cut, drilled, carved. I guess humanity owe its existence to trees and wood.

I found wooden mouse(s) and keypad(s), made out of bamboo I think.

I wished camera makers include more wood in camera designs, but plastic/rubber seem to be more suited to low cost automated production.

Warfff. I read many comments such as that one, happens that people zoom at 100% on their displays and never make prints. I made prints of photos taken with kit lenses, I was shocked to see how good prints looked so much that I lost interest in online content for an entire week. When I'll do more prints, I'll probably go offline completely as pixel peeping is completely irrelevant in the real world when showing images outside the pixel peeper world. Pixel peeping is such a good thing for making people buy new cameras, that's why no camera maker will ever comment about it, and every commercial review is based on comparing image test chart at 100% zoom, completely unrelated of how the image look on a framed poster. Pixel peeping is a trap that nearly the totality of photographers fell into. Sony lenses are designed to look great on test charts and since the majority of pixel peepers never prints, lens quality remain a view of the mind, completely virtual never make it into the real world.

Happen that I know some people working as artists, you'll be shocked how they judge your tack sharp images, when your images taken with a super duper gear are the lowest rated by viewers at an photo exhibition. I learned it personally the hard way, I had a super sharp image that according to petapixels, dpreview, photozone etc should have been top rated at an art exhibition, while it finished lowest rated. There were photos taken with cheap cameras that were in the top 10 of the most liked images. Pixel peeping can't miss the mark more in photography, but it for sure make camera marketers happy.

If I remember correctly, Winder bought a Sony A9 and since then never stopped advertising and telling all the goods about Sony and also that other brands are so good, in the non-Pentax section. Many times what he wrote about Pentax is incorrect, he writes as if he has angst against Pentax, I don't know what Pentax did to him so he hates Pentax now.

At a speed of 1mm focal length per week, starting from the k mount, the first 30mm of the lens have been completed, 55mm remain to be done, when engineer will have reached the filter thread they can start posting so leaks on petapixels and pentax rumors.

It's perfect to have people who buy new cameras on a regular basis, we need them to finance the R&D of camera companies. The smart buyer is the one who wait for a couple of tech generations to pass in order to get the same tech for a lot cheaper. We know from history that the latest camera gear is always so great that as soon as the next model is released, the value of the previous model falls to ground level.

It should be none of the KP or K3. They should make use of electronic shutter as much as possible and automatically, to allow fast frame rates, low vibrations, best IQ. It should be , IMO a sensor driven machine, with mirror as an ad-on feature. Current Pentax camera are DSLR with a LV add-on. IMO, when the camera is in LV mode, it should be 100% electronic, completely silent with access to all camera controls without dropping the mirror, and when the camera use the optical path same thing. They should also drop the dial on top of the K1, kirky on the K1 but weird to use, replace 1 mode dial by software setting, and so have 2 big dials on top on each side of viewfinder, a nice square LCD on top. With such expensive camera, people shoot raw and develop with LR, it makes no sense to have all those gimmick features that clog the menus. It's better to have usbc charging and a high performance wifi connection with free software to access photographs via image processing software on PC, Android, iOS. Ricoh have to ditch some of the old software stuff from Pentax that in 2020 will not make sense anymore: ditch pixel shift, ditch OAA simulator etc... all these things are used for playing around, but never used for serious photography. Now if they keep pixel shift, instead of automatic stacking, they must also generate flat raw files so that they don't have to care about how third party software deal with pixel shift. Pentax was Ok, lacking on AF but the rest was fine, Ricoh got lost by adding more complexity to the firmware that most people never use. Make a Pentax camera that is rugged, simple to control and fast to operate, and with good wireless data transfer to external devices. Keep the K mount, built a camera that is quicker to operate and more silent.

I suppose you are kidding. There has never been so much camera equipment than now, camera shops are running in circle hopping that someone will show up to buy something. I'm sure B&H , Adorama or any camera shop will be happy to sell you something.

How much time did it take for the DFA*50 to be released after we've seen the mockup? It looks like the 85 mockup is more advanced then than the first of the DFA*50 mockup.

What I notice about the DFA*85 mockup is its particular shape with significant increase in diameter beyond the diaphragm plane, which means that the optical formula is already well defined. So we could guess that the release isn't that far in time (fall 2019? spring 2020?).
