Using DoF preview, set to "Optical preview", but applied in LV mode, Av and M.
- In Av mode, LV mode, the lens diaphragm is by default wide open and it is stopped down to the set f number when the DoF is done by pulling the shutter button lever to the right side. By default, the brightness of the scene on the back LCD is constant, regardless of aperture and shutter speed settings. When the DoF preview is activated, the scene on the back LCD darken and the DoF is reduced, as expected.
- In M mode, LV mode. DoF preview becomes an interesting feature. In M mode , aperture, shutter speed and ISO are set manually. In M mode and Live View, If the scene is underexposed , it appears dark on the back LCD, and if the scene is overexposure the scene on the back LCD appear brighter. No surprise, we are used to that. Now, when DoF preview is activated, the brightness of the scene on the back LCD changes as if we are in Av mode: if the scene is underexposed in M mode, activating DoF preview makes it brighter. And if, on top of DoF preview we press the Ok button to zoom in the image on the LV display, the brightness changes again.
That behavior in M mode is not documented in the manual. But it can be very useful, for example when using M mode with a flash, and very useful to see clearly whenever we would like to manually fine tune focus while zooming in on LV display.
