My 40mm Ltd. had the first experience (internally, thankfully). Cost me $35 Cdn to get it fixed.

Well you guys had me all worried so I took my KP down off the shelf and took a pic of my cat sleeping behind the screen (there is a radiator heater under the table, so it kind of draws her!). Anyway, f8.0, ISO1600, 1/2 sec (hand held!), zoomed to 53mm. She is about 16"-18" away and you can see the in focus band easily on the table on her back eye where I was focusing though she twisted a bit at the last moment. Quite stable given the .5 sec exposure. I'm not too worried!

A lot of "luck" in photography is simply being out there trying things.

Love Quebec City...so beautiful there. Once, about 25 years ago I was there to do final negotiations and to sign off for our province on a national professional licensing agreement for psychologists (under the original AIT). One of the other delegates--in addition to being a psych--was also a campanologist from England originally before he immigrated to Canada. Anyway, he got us into the old Anglican cathedral through his rather obscure/esoteric campanology community connections to ring the bells to celebrate!

Didn't have a camera with while climbing up the steeple, but some of the stair runs near the top were made of de-barked logs with adze-cut (NOT sawn) notches to mount the treads and risers! Lots of old blacksmith nails in evidence. I don't think any of that's present day code! And some of the graffiti on the walls went back to the just before the Napoleanic wars era.

Don't know about the condition now this quarter century later, but if it can be entered these days, there's definitely some great shooting in there and/or up there.

Quebec may be almost as stunning and nearly as pretty as Newfoundland when on the land doing landscapes! :-) (Of course there are no more stunning seascapes anywhere in the world as here...but that's just how it is!) OTOH your more urban stuff shows how much more architectural history is over your way. Especially in the Ancien Ville area of the city which you apparently like to explore as well.

And the food beats Montreal all to hell.

#'s 1 & 3 have quite interesting lighting for that sort of topography. Was that the actual look? or more the final rendering. Is it a function of latitude/sun angle since you're in BC for these, it seems? (I've seen somewhat the same light here in Newfoundland in the later fall when the sun angles get very low, but way different topography.)

Young ruffed grouse (I think) on path near B-36 crash site above Burgoyne's Cove NL. Would have been better if I'd had the 55-300 mounted on my KP, but with cropping at 85mm got an acceptable pic, I think.

I love my 16-85mm. It's on my KP 30-40% of the time. Didn't like it as much with my old K-50 as it really does require a sensor/recording system that can handle somewhat higher ISOs when you live somewhere as dark as Newfoundland often is even during midday. With the coming of my K-70 (which has finally just come back totally refurbished after my fall last summer which cracked the case) and now my KP I find it absolutely acceptable.

I also have a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8. It's great for people, ships, and buildings but my copy just does not render landscapes (at least here) well at all. Distance comes out looking very pointillist-looking rather than sharp and clear like my 16-85mm. I'd sell my Sigma except I do need it for indoors and outdoor shots like Christmas decorated fishing boats on a winter's night.

Since you have a KP, you should be absolutely satisfied with the possible exception of very dark or night conditions.

Just fooling around while watching football, but this really shows the capabilities of the K70/16-85mm combo. ISO3200, 1/25sec, handheld, stabilization on.

at higher res.

Never ceases to amaze me what a modern camera is capable of.

DEFINITELY do not let you dog eat the bright red one--amanita muscaria. You shouldn't either, but it probably won't kill you outright.

There are others I think are bad--or worse--as well.

Wasn't carrying the right kit for this shot (was hiking with no ND filter and no tripod in a new area) and so it is not as sharp as I'd like as I used F22 to try to get some blending of the water. Nice rainbow because the winds were nearly 60kph (40mph).

For an architecture shot try the US Embassy down the street from the Market. It is such a complete architectural monstrosity that you should be able to find many interesting angles at both the low and high ends of the lens.

Haven't been out for a bit, but here is a ship that's been out by the oil rigs off Newfoundland recently. Only difficulty was getting the lens centered as best as possible to take a pic through a chain link fence. Hopefully my partial correction tool work fixing the link problem isn't too visible.

Was walking on some trails in Austin Texas and found the weirdest ice formation I've ever seen. One weed was affected by the cold in such a way that sap broke out through the bark just above the ground and sap extruded into the air in a manner so as to create what looked like nothing so much as feathers. These were everywhere along the nature trail I was hiking.

There's a certain irony in traveling from Newfoundland Canda in the winter to Austin Texas to find new forms of ice you've never seen.

VERY thick clouds on Conception Bay, but interesting lighting though quite dark. Near sun did break through a few times. Love the clarity of this lens for outdoors. All taken from sailboat (motoring due to no wind) on the water. Paired w/ K-70.

I'm quite happy with the landscapes this lens is delivering. My results with my copy of the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 look much like this board software reduced copy. The full res version of this picture has a lot more "pop" and clarity.

Cuckold Cove and Cuckold Head (note the ram's head shape to the land formation--I suspect sex starved sailors certainly did a couple of centuries ago!) Note the East Coast Trail going off to the left in the distance. Great climb there!

Well it came, but the weather turned gray with mist and blowing fog. Even so I am impressed with the sharpness and color so far. No attempt at art here, just trying out the lens. Click on pics for exifs.

Start of a race at my marina. Wind 20+ knots, mist, scudding gray, no sun. The arm is about 600 meters across here. The windows across the arm are stunningly sharp compared to my Sigma in full res to my eyes.

Signal Hill--a popular tourist destination here was a bit sunnier, but not much. Just some cloud openings.

Fort Amherst across the harbor entryway...The rock formations really pop out of the pic at full res. Tremendous sharpness compared to other lenses.

Signal Hill Tower at 16mm. There was a bit of sun breaking through here.

At first glance this lens seems worth every penny even for quite gray conditions. I shot generally full or near full open where I would stop down with my Sigma 17-50 (assuming I'd take it out in the mist in the first place). I look forward to trying the 16-85 out in conditions with more light, color and contrast. xposted to 16-85 is coming thread.
