Doundounba...You will be happy to know the Oceanex Avalon arrived in St. John's last night ahead of the storm and is unloading! Docked in an inconvenient spot to photograph though. This is the best available angle.

Sigma 17-50 HSM, Pentax K-50. Took at a number of ISO in aperture (Av Priority) mode. ISO 100, F11 @ 1/40 sec is best shot.

Very dark conditions due to low sun angle at this time of year and very thick clouds from the storm which is about to hit so brightened, increased temperature, increased contrast, and increased saturation slightly in SilkyPix 6.0 Studio Pro. (click for EXIF info)

Sigma 17-50mm all near the wide end (click pics for exif info). All pictures from near Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Am trying to show the scale of the country here mainly horizontally but vertically on the last one. Not sure I really succeeded as even putting the f-stop up didn't seem to catch the clarity of the air and light. The light up there truly was incredible. (xposted to k-50 pics thread)

Was hiking to a place where I thought there would be a nice panorama so only packed 2 lenses: Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 17-50. Wouldn't you know it???...all the worthwhile shots were really macro shots and I was not packing my Pentax 100WR.

Anyway, with judicious cropping at 40%-67% was able to get reasonable prints, I think, of subjects that really would have done much better with a macro--particularly the 100mm macro in the first 2 cases.

All shots at 50mm.

Hiked up there again. Nowhere near as nice a day for landscapes so I focused more macro shots of flowers (see K-50 pics thread or D FA lens thread). That said, tested out your suggestions. And yes I was an idiot. Much better resolution at f7.1 and f11 when you look at 100% crops. I;m just not as experienced with panoramic landscapes as other kinds of shooting and this just slipped my notice as I took the original pics. Now if we could ever get a bright sunny day again I'll hike up there and take those shots for real.

There was sun and blue sky in the western direction, just not as dramatic a panorama, and you can see the improvement using f10. I used the same oversaturated development technique with Silkypix V2 film.

THANKS.

No...I was going for a big country effect at this point but did not have my normal 10-20 lens I use for such things.

From the East Coast Trail guide...

"A scenic climb and descent [111meters, 3.7 KM (one way)], rough underfoot, great views back to the cliffs of Southside Hills, Cabot Tower and on to Cape Spear and the Cape Spear lighthouses. Note this path has mostly low growth and is very exposed to weather (think fog, wind, rain)"

Beautiful scenery, but, well, this is when you are still .7 km from the road and still 70 meters up (i.e., 10% gradient :( ). That little black thingy where the road enters the trees is my car! I am 64 tomorrow. Guess I'll keep getting my exercise! Probably what I'll do is take both the 17-50 and 10-20 Sigmas up there and see/experiment. The 17-50 is a new lens.

First 17mm pic: f4, focus point was main lighthouse.
Second 17mm pic: f3.2, focus point taken on farthest rock before final composition.

Clicking on pics shows a goodly amount of exif info from the album system.

H'mmm thot I had it stopped down more. Do I have to make that climb again? :-(

Hiking with K-50/Sigma 17-50 near Cape Spear, Newfoundland

I like the detail and in the plant closeups at higher zoom.

Nice colors, but not quite the detail I'd like at 17mm. Am I doing something wrong???

There is also barrel distortion you can see in the sea/sky line. Could remove this but have not yet.

Not satisfied with "pop"--i.e. there isn't any, but it's picking up color nicely. Need to work more with this lens.
