I'm not sure of the time limit; I haven't tried that. Guess I'd better load a battery and 135 cart and find out! One nice feature of the CR-3E: a VF blind, to prevent light entering the VF during long exposures and throwing off the metering. Why can't my K20D have that?

My M42 Argus CR-3E aka Chinon CE2 aka GAF LES-2 also meters off the film during exposure. I've seen claims that it's the most advanced M42 body EVER! Mine, with the Auto-Cintar (Chinon) 55/1.7, cost me a total of US$6 shipped. It's a tank.

Not exactly 'new' (I've had it since 1975) but I've been digging out stuff to sell or donate, and found this stashed away in an old box that I haven't touched for a decade. Compass, M2, one each; with case, carrying, M19. Compass produced by Kalart Company Inc, Stamford, Conn. Case is thick leather. Compass is calibrated in mils, not degrees, This was used for laying-in field artillery. Ah, them was the days...

Field artillery means never having to say you're sorry.

Welcome to the forums! Learning your new camera shouldn't take long, just a few years. Be patient. I think Malcolm Gladwell wrote that to gain expertise at anything takes 1000 hours of practice. Or was it 10,000? Easy-peasy. Have fun!

Better talk to Adam about commercially publishing extracts from PFC. Might be a couple IP issues there.

TOT (totally off-topic): My next post will be #11,000. Yow. I need to get out and shoot more. Sigh...

Nice haul!

Hmm, I have a Vivitar 2x Matched Multiplier but it doesn't say what it's matched to. I wonder if it's the 70-150? Now I'll have to look for one... ;)

You're sure it's Sigma? My Diamatic 28 doesn't seem too Sigmoid. Maybe I need more research -- and rethink selling that one.

QuoteQuote:

8. Sears GAF L-ES (aka Chinon CE Memotron) with a 55mm lens, probably the Sears 55/M42
...

The Chinon/Sears looks like this:

1974 - GAF LES-2 (Chinon CE-2 Memotron rebadged for GAF, formerly Ansco). | Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Too bad we can't see the lens. I got an Argus (Chinon) CR-3E with 55/1.7 lens which I attribute to Chinon but may be Cosina. The lens is a sharp little devil. The camera is a tank, allegedly the most advanced M42 body ever. My Vivitar-Kiron Series 1 V1 70-210/3.5 usually lives on it. This superior camera+lens cost me US$6 shipped. The CR-3E was also sold as Chinon CE2 and GAF LES-2. Butkus DOES have that manual. I forget which of those models it's labeled as, but take another look. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll email you the PDF.

I already have a couple small (10-inch) mini-notebooks, like an old Vaio that's great for travel -- but not for itinerant reading. I mainly want a handy media device: PDFs, CBRs, MP3s, stuff like that, with some web-browsing. I'm finally finding some reader apps; now I just need to find how to import from my media libraries. Yet another learning experience...

Acquisition: a tablet, my first, an 8-inch job. Vizio VTAB 1008, with a 16Gb uSDHC card added, for around US$225 together (taxed). I got it just yesterday, at the end of an exhausting excursion. Today, dental work. Meaning, I haven't really been able to put it through its paces thoroughly. And I know nothing of Android 2.3 or whatever. But so far, I am underwhelmed. Seems lethargic, many streaming-audio dropouts, sucky link performance. I don't see how to load my literature onto it, or even if it reads PDFs and CBRs. I can't seem to get behind its Apps page, down to the file system.

Why this Vizio? Because that's what CostCo had. And with our next CostCo run scheduled within the month, this will likely go right back for a return+refund. But miracles may happen. I may learn to manipulate it as I wish. Maybe when the painkillers wear off I'll find a Vizio tab forum. (And here it is.) Maybe it's the cat's meow. We shall see.

Now you just need the FA20-35 and you're all fixed up! Los Tres Hermanos nicely replace the DA18-55 and DA50-200, with shorter+sharper zoom ranges.

The F35-70 is a real beauty, eh? So easy to toss in my bag, barely larger than the FA50/1.4. A fine lens!

My latest purchase (which won't arrive from Hong Kong for a few weeks, but what the hell) was from Loreo. I got their original lens-in-a-cap 35/5.6-64 and Lubot 10x snap-on magnifier, which will also fit on my Perspective Correction lens-in-a-cap 35/11-22. These all weigh about 25g each. Great additions to my ultralight minikit!

Ooh ooh! A sun-blocking filter, right?

Nice price! I never see ultra-discounted bags.

Latest re-acquisition: We're sorting through our books, and uncovered my 1977 book-club edition of Susan Sontag's ON PHOTOGRAPHY. [Note: A careful reading reveals that she hates photography.] And stuffed inside... a customs form, listing some photo gear I took to Europe in 1975! With serial numbers. All of which was later stolen. Here is my hot list. I want them back.

Camera: Canon Demi EE17, # 216520
Camera: Canon Dial-35, # 550940
Camera: Olympus Pen-FT, # 250613
Lens: Tele-Astranar 400/5.6, # 83467

I guess I didn't have to register the smaller Zuiko lenses; anyway, they're not on this form.

Welcome back! Wondered what happened to you. Now you can go for ribbons too!

I think the 1.5TB was USB and the 2TB was a plug-in. I'll be in another Big Box in a couple days, and look for types and prices. If I remember to. Duh.

I'm on a mission, or several quests, or whatever. Get in shape for the long drive towards Nicaragua in 5 months. Choose optimal affordable puter gear. (Bought from the house budget, not my PayPal account. Whew.) Sell some old hardware so I can buy some new photo stuff -- maybe a K-01, maybe a NEX, depends on how much more LBA I can handle. Or maybe just a new travel lens. But first, gotta finish unpacking (we just returned 60 hours ago from a long sojourn). And I'll want to develop the RAWs I shot this year.

Yeah, that's a beauty! I sure miss Zenith, from the hot-tube radios to the Heath-Zenith computers. My HZ-90, RIP...

I saw 1.5TB and 2TB drives cheap at local Big Box stores recently, in the US$90-$130 range, so the post-flood crisis doesn't seem severe here. And another 2TB drive may follow me home soon.

But while we haven't acquired anything lately but splendid artworks (Native American ceramics etc) we *do* expect some new arrivals in upcoming weeks: Lenovo laptop, Android tablet, maybe a K-01 if I sell enough lenses-radios-guitars-etc. I wonder what the ca.1947 Aloha lap-steel with original case and matching amp will fetch? And the Zenith Transoceanics?

We have a plan: Leave California around the middle of this upcoming October, be in central Mexico for the Days of the Dead festivities, then drive around Yucatan and Guatemala and Nicaragua till the rainy season starts after Easter. We should bring back some goodies from that trip. Maybe a handmade guitar, eh?

I have a similar problem with my rather large Lil'Bigma DG 170-500. Not so much *how* to use it, but *why*, when I'm not a birder. Good luck!

Ah, you got the classic Tomioka 55/1.4 for a pittance! (My first was US$24, my second was US$2.25. They usually go for well upwards of US$60 now.) It's also seen badged as Mamiya, Yashica, maybe Porst, and it is SUPER-DUPER! The DOF is very close to the K50/1.2. Bokeh and rendering are nice, contrast is good -- one of the best. Congrats!

Tres kewl!

I have a special NPR radio too. It's a crank-up job -- wind it for a minute, listen to the local NPR classical station for 10-15 minutes, then crank it again. It's great during blizzards when power & lines & net are down. Yeah, light some candles; crank the radio; heat up some frozen cioppino on the Sterno stove; crank the radio again; watch big fat snowflakes float down; sip some merlot; crank the radio again; etc.

But yours looks better. And no cranking.

Let's see, what have I sold lately? My historic adobe in Old Bisbee Arizona, one of the most photogenic places in USA. Further camera gear sales will have to await my return to my Lake-Tahoe-area home base, but what I sell will mostly be of little interest here -- except maybe the Tascam ministudio. I haven't been able to sell a grandson yet. Bother.

My ship has come in. It's just a little ship. It only carried two Vivitar Series 1 zooms: PK-AR 19-35/3.5-4.5, and PK-A 70-210/2.8-4 (Komine, version 3). At US$70 total, I'm not complaining. At first I was a bit miffed because the long one was listed as f/2.8 and I didn't expect f/2.8-4. Then I researched and found that 1) ain't no f/2.8 version, and 2) version 3 is highly desired. So my old M42 version 1 copy will probably see a bit less action from now on.

But since I unloaded the ship opened the package, I've been running stumbling around Old Bisbee with the 19-35. Really sweet! A bit of barrel distortion at 19mm but I'm not complaining. I should load some film in my ZX-M and really wail with it -- it's about FOV-equivalent to the DA12-24. Pretty small and light too. Does anyone have an idea of the maker? Is it maybe Tokina? Serial number is # 09745xxx which doesn't tell me anything.

I actually have new acquisitions, or will in a few days if/when they arrive. Two A-type Vivitar Series 1 zooms: 19-35/3.8 and 70-210/2.8, US$70 for the pair, shipped. The long one will be my fastest longer lens, beating out a 70-210 and some 200's at f/3.5. The short one should be wizard on my ZX-M and the upcoming K3. Price is a bit at the high end for me but I just couldn't pass them by.
