Arpe, you only have to buy glasses from Specsavers to call yourself a Pentaxian again.

That is a very good photo. I like the light, mood and the contact you have with the model. Great.

If I understand you right you have to use f3.5 because it is to dark and that gives you a to shallow dof. If that is the case then a faster lens like the one Arpe suggested will give you an even shallower dof if you use f2.8.

What ISO are you using at the moment? I would have thought that ISO 800 should get you enough light to get a shutter speed of 1/125 or 1/250 at f3.5.

If you can get close to the riders why not pick up a cheap M50mm 1.7 from trademe and try it out. Five meters away it will give you a dof of 0.67m at f1.7 and 1.13m at f2.8.

I watched a bit of the Phoenix game today and you would have got some great photos from that game. It was more waterpolo then soccer. Looking at the forecast you should be able to get some nice muddy shots.

Nice photos you have from the walk. Music 2, Music 8 and Broken Palace are my favourites but all of them are good. I think B&W works best with street photo portraits.

I think that is a very good idea. You have some outstanding photos on your site and keeping down the numbers make sense. If you replace photos with new work only replace a couple of photos at a time. Are you able to see the most viewed photos? They are the ones to keep.

Hi Jeff

A lot of good advice from the others. To help you with the planning, the drive to Bay of Islands from Auckland is 3-3 1/2 hours depending on roadworks. Personally I would pick Kerikeri instead of the normal touristy Pahia. Don't miss the old stone house in Kerikeri.

From Bay of Islands to Waitakere leave the State Highway 1 in Wellsford and turn right towards Helensville on State Highway 16. It is a very nice country road. From Helensville it is a short drive to Muriwai. From Muriwai you continue south until you reach the Waitakeres. Take the scenic drive from Swanson to Piha. There are some viewing spots along the drive where you can look out over Auckland.

Rangitoto is a great place as Cpopham said. Waiheke is also a good spot where you can rent a car for the day. It have some beautiful scenery.

Is the trip during the week or in the weekend?

Cheers
Eddie

I was more thinking along the lines of who would use a camera worth that much for a $500 loan and then default on the interest payment when they could have sold it for good money. But as I said I may be wrong.

I may be wrong but it smells a bit fishy when a loan company auction of a camera like that with a $ 1.00 reserve. BTW if you borrow $500 from that company for 3 months the interest is $600. That is 360% interest a year. I am in the wrong business.

They sell new A50/1.2 in Australia. Wow, lets buy as many as possible and sell them on E-bay.

Yeah I wonder who that fool was.

I have always thought your rugby photos are good but lately it looks like you have stepped up another level. Some of those close up shots from last weekend are great.

When it comes to focus I haven't tried the K-7 but the K20 does the trick for me. Many of my recent photos is from a pitching boat but I still get most of them in focus, even out to 210mm. So I think a lot of it have to do with practice.

Had a look at your recent photos and there are some great shots specially the close ups. The only thing is that the photos from a year back seems just a bit more sharper and crisper. Did you have another camera back then?

Cheers

Just bear in mind that they try to get of GST and duty by having a lower cost on the paper work when it arrives in the country. They actually offered me to do that when I asked them about the free shipping. I was tempted to send the email to the customs department but I didn't in the end. Sooner or later the customs will find out and the purchaser will be the one who gets into trouble.

That is such a great photo. It brings back many memories from my days in the air force. As a meteorology assistant I was able to fly next to the pilot in many different aircraft. The DC-3 was also used a lot for troop transportation and I remembered it being very noisy.

Thanks for sharing.

I have photographed dance including Rock n Roll. My best advice is to avoid it as the plague. Joke aside it is very hard. As you say the light is often bad and they move fast.
If you use a flash you will freeze the movements which can be quite good. The hard part is to do it at the right time. It is easier if you have done the dancing yourself. This is without flash as I was not permitted to use it. High ISO, lot of noise and shallow DOF.

But the best shots I have got is with slower shutter speed. That way you can show the movements in your photo. Once again it is difficult but can be done. My success rate was very poor.
Once again this is taken in bad light, with high ISO and at least three different light sources that made the white balance a nightmare. Click for bigger photo size.

But give it a go. It is fun to try something new and it is awesome to see a really good pair dancing.

Yes Arpe. How can you support an Australian bank. At least the Ford was American.

Yes the shutter speed is not slow. Between 1/1200 and 1/4000. Because it is so bright on the water shutter speed is no problem. The real problem is to get some details in the dark areas without blowing out the highlights in the sails and boats.

But the K20D handles this very well. The professional guys doing this use Canon FF cameras with the kind of lenses that Arpe was talking about that cost a small fortune. But they are also honest to say that the photos from the K20D have very high quality.

The International 420 association liked the photos and asked if they could use them so I must have been doing something right.

Congrats on the 100mm macro. I was looking but don't have the funds at the moment. Let us know how it performs.

There is still one or two bargains to have on TM. Someone picked up the F35-70 and F70-210 together with a camera for $90.00.

They may be old and the F70-210 a bit heavy but still give you very sharp photos with nice colours.

How is this at 210mm from a pitching boat.

Hi Guys.

Have any of you taken the opportunity to take some photos during the Chinese New Year celebration?

The family went to the ASB show grounds last weekend. Lots of nice food and performances. As always the big crowds makes it hard for photography but I was able to catch a bit of what was going on.

I have a few of the photos here. Chinese New Year 2010 - a set on Flickr

Cheers

A fellow photographer sent me a link to this test about how well you can read colours. I found it quite interesting but I guess you need your monitor calibrated to get the best result. My result was 4 where less is better.

X-Rite: Get exactly the color you need, every time, anywhere in the world.

Hi Emma

Nice lenses you got. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on the 85mm 1.8. I do a lot of musical and dance performances and a 85mm would be a perfect length.

I have not used the 31mm ltd but I know others who love it. I don't think you can go wrong with that lens.

When it comes to camera salesmen there is very few good ones left. Unfortunately for them you have bought in to the wrong system which make it harder for them to sell you a lot of extra gear. Fortunately for you, the camera you decided on is a very good bit of equipment and as you already know there is a lot of very good second hand and new lenses available.

When you get comments like you did make a mental note to yourself. "Boy, that guy knew less about cameras than I do". After a while you will realise how little many of them know and it will make you feel better.
