Tucumcari and most other towns along the Rt-66 corridor were a destination stop-over from the depression up until the interstate highway system in the 60s destroyed these small cities by routing traffic around them.
Our favorite motel in Tucumcari...

The entire region around the 4 Corners is my most favorite place on the planet. One can sense, see, smell, taste and feel the geology of of that area (BTW, I earned my degree in geology from ASU). We spent the night on the west side of that bridge in the only hotel and restaurant in Mexican Hat. I would love to redo that journey, again (this time with a Pentax and skipping Vegas). And, as usual, here's the obligatory pic of the highway made famous by Forrest Gump...

Back in 2008 I bought a car (Subaru Baja) and drove it out to Vegas for a geophysical convention (really!). Afterwards I drove back across southern UT through all the nat. parks, taking pics along the way. While at Zion, my Canon Sureshot(?) gave up (see attached of the final pic). I continued on the same path you did across the CO river and down the Dugway to the Goosenecks and Mexican Hat, on my journey back to the plains. Wish I had pics, yours is exactly what I remember...

The original Route 66 Ribbon Road, also called the Sidewalk Hwy, cut through quiet farmland in NE Oklahoma, was laid out in 1921-22. It was 15 miles long and only 9 ft wide.
The story goes that Oklahoma, barely a state in the early 1920s (they entered the union in 1907), was short on cash, and highways were expensive. They needed a solid roadbed, so to cut costs they cut the width to one-lane.
The old road predates the designation of Route 66, and in 1926 it was absorbed into the historic route to the West. It remained the original hwy until 1937, when the route was realigned.

Allochthonous/autochthonous are certainly terms we geologists simply relish fabricating for scientific journals. ---------- Post added 01-18-23 at 11:24 AM ----------
Just imagine what's happening on Greenland with accelerated glacial calving and retreat. That landmass will, too, experience isostatic rebound.

Those quartzites appear regularly interspersed thoughout the upper vertical section similar to cyclothems, indicative of transgressive/regressive seas during the late Proterozoic. ---------- Post added 01-17-23 at 08:51 AM ----------
A good example of the power of glacial carving can be shown throughout the islands east of Portland, ME, that show the direction of glacial movement in the islands linear shapes.
