DBS: Looks like the power company arborists called by.

I'll have to go back to see how it looks once the tree leafs out...

From the image resolution the tree appears to be a cedar of some variety due to the darker color and needle-like foliage. Yet, it also appears to be in distress. I noted six areas along the trunk and branches where the bark has peeled off, indicating it's in trouble, or it could have been mauled by a porcupine.

Thanks, Julie, we do get some gorgeous sunsets/sunrises out here on the plains, especially during the winters. Just to let you know (and anyone else), I do not over-saturate the color in these images - in camera or via processing. Rather, I wait about 5-10 minutes after/before the sun sets/rises and slightly underexpose the brightest part of the scene, so as not to clip any region. In processing I raise the white (and maybe the highlight) bars to just about clipping level, then raise the shadows or overall exposure slightly. Sometimes I'll raise the clarity to about 10% to bring out the structure of the clouds. That gets me to essentially what my own eyes see, and it's beautiful...

In the first image the tree is attempting to compartmentalize a wound caused by a cut or broken off branch. The gap appears to be too large for the tree to fully encapsulate it, possibly being hindered by the fluid leaking out. Just above appears to be a dead branch as part of the crotch of the tree. This depression would serve as a rainwater catchment which would be leaked downward through the dead branch. The fluid may also contain sap from the phloem/xylem capillaries. The wound could also serve as a portal for disease-carrying beetles.

The second pic shows burls most likely caused by bacterial/fungal infestation which is also undermining and rotting the base of the tree, and looks like root die-back has occurred. Not good signs of a healthy tree.

These are only my guesses. An arborist could give a precise diagnosis.

Nematodes? They're known to bung up the capillaries of evergreens.
