Sometimes I think it's better just to keep your distance from those storm cells. I became somewhat concerned as it was headed right toward me with a lot of lightning, which was essentially cloud-to-cloud. I felt much safer after the cell had drifted past. Your shot is still pretty dramatic!

They're the result of some oddly turbulent wind patterns. I believe paulh's image (#5449) above are also of the same type.
HoutHans: you're right. Those clouds tend to form after a severe storm has passed by.
This one's from the same storm system and appears to be somewhat anthropomorphic...
