Aslyfox could be onto something - the K-1 requires that you put the firmware update card in Slot 1. Any chance you're using slot 2?
With that done, you close the door, and turn the power on while holding the MENU button and you should see the message - "Updates the camera firmware" on the LCD, with the version number displayed (it should include previous version numbers as well). Select START and don't touch your camera until it displays "COMPLETE". Then turn the camera off and remove the card.

Welcome to the forum.
Not too clear on where the ERROR message was?? Did this happen when you burned the SD card or when the SD card was brought up in your K-1?
What do you mean by "The cameral reports updating to v1.43"? Check the actual version the camera is using per derekkite's suggestion and see if it shows 1.43. If you got an error message from the camera, chances are the update didn't take.
There's a specific process to follow (explained elsewhere in this forum) which you might refer to, just to make sure all the steps were followed correctly in doing the update process. I would check that list just to be safe. That procedure can be a little finicky. Be sure to use a blank SD card and unpack the firmware prior to copying it to the card.
