It was effectively like you described it, in september.
No Kingfisher.
We saw a Nile Varan close to the heron, and an Aegyptian goose: Egyptian goose by Denis Bousquet, sur Flickr
I didnt post the photograph of the varan, because it looked dull, as it was the same colour as the rock where it was sunbathing, with a zenithal sun that didnt help to give a nice texture.

Well, there are very nice wildlife sanctuaries in Africa, but it is the place where the population grows faster than anywhere else, and also where there are several endless civil wars, like in Sudan, Rwanda, Somali and Congo. Which is not the best long term forecast for wildlife conservation
