I get that. Last weekend at the New Martinville Vintage Regatta I put my new D-FA 150-450mm on my K-3 and my DA* 60-260 and HD 1.4x TC on my K-3 III. The 150-450mm was really too long for the frontstretch. The focus on the new K-3 III is just so much better than the K-3. I may be looking for a gently used K-3 III this winter as a second body for next season.

I'm really liking the combo of the Pentax 1.4x HD PENTAX-DA AF Rear Converter AW and Pentax DA* 60-250mm Zoom lens. It gives me 350mm with this lens which is a big help when shooting across a river. These are from last weekends Wheeling Vintage Raceboat Regatta on the Ohio River at Wheeling, WV |

Thanks! I was a bit skeptical Saturday when I first used it but I read too many positive reviews on the T/C so I kept after it. I had to run the f-stop up to f-14 to f-16 and to top things off I found that at full zoom the image would soften but if I backed off of full zoom just a tad the sharpness returned. By the end of the weekend I was happy with the results. I can't wait to shoot a race on a nice sunny day.

Yes it does. It took me a while to find its sweet spot but when I did I was pleased with the results. Insurance rules keep you so far away anymore every mm you can gain is a big help.

I picked up a used Pentax HD 1.4x Teleconverter From a fellow forum member and attached it to my DA* 60-250mm. It took me a while to find it's sweet spot especially since it was a very overcast weekend and I was shooting between 1000 and 4000 ISO. By the end of the weekend I was pleased with the results. The extra 100mm was nice to have. |

My K-3 and DA* 60-250mm went Boat Racing a couple of weeks ago.
I love the combo of body and lens. It allows me a LOT of room for cropping and still maintaining an outstanding quality picture. Enjoy!!!

Thanks John, The K200D still see's pit action with the 18-55mm on it. It saves having to swap lenses all the time.

I took my K-3 Boat Racing this past weekend with my new DA* 60-250mm. All I can say is WOW!!! I'm beyond pleased with this lens. The pans were done handheld at 1/60th sec. This lens really is something else. :) |

They had a small airshow at the Madison Regatta. I set the auto focus to "Auto27" and that seemed to work well for a small acrobatic bi-plane. "Auto 9" might work better with the smaller RC planes.

I shot close to 7000 exposures over the 2 day weekend. My keeper rate is probably around 70 to 75% or better. So far I've been real pleased with my K3 however I was running about the same keeper percentage with my K200D just not near as many shots per weekend. I've been shooting motorsports since 1982. I usually always pan as I'm shooting. With the K200D I would select the focus point I wanted to use. I'm still learning my K3 and it's focus system. So far I'm leaning toward the "Auto 9" setting the placing it in the lower center portion of the screen. Still experimenting though. Here are a few shots from my first weekend with my K3. :)
and then there is this example of the OUTSTANDING crop ability of the K3 RAW image!

It did real good for me John. I'm still learning the focus system. Still working on getting a handle on how many points to use and were to bias them in the viewfinder. So far for the boats 9 points auto biased toward bottom center seemed to work best for me. During the small airshow I used 29 points auto in the center of the screen. That seemed to work real well. I have another regatta the 19th & 20th with the smaller Limited Hydros. I'm sure I'll refine things more that weekend. Overall out of around 3500 shots I'd say I have 85 to 90% keepers focus wise. I expect that to improve as I develop my technique with this camera.

An Amazing ability to crop from RAW files. Here's the before.
Here's a 1280 x 800 pixel crop from the RAW of the above shot.
This was shot with a DA-L 55-300mm lens.
